2010s in fashion
The examples and perspective in this article may not represent a worldwide view of the subject. (March 2013) |
The early 2010s (2010–present) have thus far been defined by a revival of interwar, Austerity era, 1980s, and, from late 2012 onwards, early 1990s and skater fashions.[1] In the early 2010s, many mid and late 2000s fashions remain popular in Europe, the United States, Latin America, Australasia and East Asia, especially the indie pop look which largely drew upon 1960s Mod clothing combined with elements of 1970s garage rock and contemporary alternative fashion. Latin American teens and young adults, who started to keep up with general Western fashion more closely since the mid-1990s, proved to be more conservative upon maintaining or abandoning 2000s trends than their European and North American peers until about 2013.
General trends
- From 2010 onwards, colors such as teal, cobalt blue, pink and neon yellow have been popular for t-shirts and jackets, along with skinny jeans. Madras shirts with tartan prints and bright colored casual clothing[2] are popular for both men and women in the West. Western shirts, popularised by the Dallas TV series[3] and indie rock groups like Kings of Leon, remain fashionable,[4] especially in the UK and southern US, but are generally made in more subdued colors than those of the mid-2000s:[5] browns, greys, blues, and distressed stonewash denim[6] with conventional buttons[7] rather than the popular press studs as designers moved towards a more authentic Old West[8] or American pioneer look.
- Vintage clothing remained popular, although it was becoming increasingly common to cut unused stock of older fabric to modern patterns[9] or remake older garments into reconstructed clothing,[10] for example, by sewing white cotton tape around the lapels of a navy blue 1990s blazer, or go to extremes and make a shirt from deliberately mismatched scraps of fabric.[11]
- Throughout the decade, both men and women from wealthy backgrounds continue wearing expensive designer clothings. Brands popular in Europe and the US include Forever 21, Urban Outfitters, American Eagle, H and M, John Varvatos, Longchamp, and Marc Anthony Collection.[citation needed]
The influence of hipster fashion
- Continuing on from the late 2000s, fashion derived from the nerd subculture, raver subculture, and hipster subculture became a mainstream trend among European, American and Australasian men and women in their late teens to 30s.[12][13][14] The media often conflated hipster aesthetics with the short-lived mid-2000s geek chic craze.[15] Unlike the indie pop look of the mid-2000s, which was inspired by 1960s Mod and contemporary garage rock bands, 2010s hipster fashion was a fusion of the clothing worn by stereotypical nerds, the gamer subculture, and blue collar laborers.[16] In line with anti-fashion trends, many young men and women wear clothing incongruous to their socio-economic status and contemporary fashion standards, such as intermixing traditionally blue-collar clothing with casual or business attire.[17]
- Common articles of clothing for male and female hipsters in the United Kingdom and in the United States include braces,[18] newsboy caps, trilbies, fairisle print sweaters, and hoodies and sweaters bearing the word "Geek" or "Nerd." For females, job skirts, 3/4 length sleeved shirts, pencil skirts, jean skirts, floral skirts with opaque tights, footless tights, dresses and tops worn with belts, striped or polka dot cotton shorts,[19] and skinny jeans.[20] Blouses or jackets with a Peter Pan collar were made popular by model and television personality Alexa Chung. Male hipsters tended to favor plaid Western shirts, bow ties,[21] narrow neck ties, v-neck t-shirts, mismatched brightly colored socks, skinny jeans, paisley or geometric print shirts,[22] Doc Martens, and denim or chambray work shirts.[23]
Retro eyeglasses
- Perhaps the most conspicuous feature of hipster fashion to become mainstream in the early 2010s were "ironic glasses", also called "nerd glasses" or "hipster glasses",[24] used by the early emocore fans of the 1990s and early 2000s, especially male ones (though this early emo fashion never went mainstream, as most of the early post-hardcore and indie emo bands not influenced by pop punk).[25][26][27] Though the term initially referred to replica Ray-Ban Wayfarer frames worn with clear lenses or no lenses, by 2013 these had largely replaced by vintage-inspired spectacles more in line with what was worn by the average spectacle wearer in the 1950s and 1960s, such as thick horn-rimmed glasses, cat eye glasses, and browline glasses.[15] The resurgence of interest in 1960s fashions was due, in part, to the influence of Skrillex and the TV show Mad Men on American, British, Italian and Australian fashion.[28]
Women's clothing
Early 2010s (2010–2012)
Designers and models
- The leading European designers of the 2010s include Nicolas Ghesquière, Miuccia Prada, Frida Giannini, Marc Jacobs, Phoebe Philo and Karl Lagerfeld.
- Top models include Lara Stone, Karlie Kloss, Joan Smalls, Natasha Poly, Liu Wen, Anja Rubik,Freja Beha Erichsen, Mariacarla Boscono and Saskia de Brauw.[29][30]
1980s influences
- The early 2010s, so far, have seen many recycled fashions from the 1950s,[31] 1970s and 1980s as designers from stores like Topshop replicated original vintage clothing. In the United States, it is popular to wear designer brands like Gucci, Chanel, and Versace, neon colors such as pink, green, teal, black, purple, and yellow.[32]
- Popular tops for American, British and Australian women aged 20–50 include tunics, 1980s style baseball jackets,[33] oversized cardigans, 1940s New Look dresses and trenchcoats, Tube tops, western shirts, 2fer and layered shirts and tees, dresses and shirts worn with belts, Perfecto motorcycle jackets customized with studs,[34] floral camisoles worn with matching hot pants, sundresses, and short dresses worn over ankle or capri length leggings or jeans. European women wear sparkly dresses, baggy one-size-fits-all Empire line skirts, blouses and dresses, and lace, figure-hugging white organza maxi dresses inspired by Pippa Middleton.[35]
- From 2010 to 2012 many late 2000s fashions remained popular in Europe, the United States, East Asia, and Latin America, including acid wash skinny jeans worn with black leather jackets for a "rock chick" look, [36] bell-bottoms, microskirts, romper suits,[37][38] leather trousers popularized by Kim Kardashian,[39] preppy colored jeans. skinny colored jeans, ankle pants, ankle colored jeans worn especially with ballet flats, Sperry top-siders boat shoes, or flat knee high riding boots. In Britain and Australia, Uggs,[40] flip-flops, Ballerina flats, cavalier boots,[41] Doc Martens, and gladiator sandals are very popular footwear for women.
- Other notable European, Australasian and Pan-American trends include alpaca wool Peruvian hats,[42] clutches, high top sneakers,[43] Ray-Ban Wayfarer or aviator sunglasses, leg warmers, knee socks or leg warmers peeking out over flat knee high boots especially knee high riding boots with skirts or short dresses or over jeans or leggings, rain boots, stilettos, Keds, TOMS Shoes, Sperry Top-Sider boat shoes, and Chucks. Smaller handbags replaced Birkin bags and the large designer It bags of the early-2000s.[44]
- In Mexico and the West Coast of the United States, young women prefer fresh fashion but with a modern twist, wearing leather jackets[45] or long coats and miniskirts combined with 1980s inspired hairstyles like the hime cut with blonde highlights.[46]
Leggings and Snuggies
- Originally restricted to the gym, Tracksuits, sweatpants, yoga pants, denim print jeggings, and dark spandex leggings[47] are often worn as street fashion by younger women like Paula Patton or TOWIE's Lauren Goodger, usually without underwear[48] to avoid panty lines and covered by a long blouse to prevent exposure. A general rule of thumb is that the shirt or tunic worn with the leggings should cover at the very least 80% of the wearer's derriere to avoid a tacky or trashy appearance.[49] Also Nike Tempo Shorts as gym wear and everyday wear sometimes with capri or ankle length leggings underneath.
- From 2010-2011, a popular fad was the sleeved blanket: a sleeping bag combined with a dressing gown known as a "Snuggie" in America.[50] Before it was superseded by the onesies and morph suits of the mid-2010s, the "Snuggie" was often purchased as a gag gift, or worn ironically by young British women as a type of anti-fashion (see next section).
Mid-2010s (2013–16)
Return of anti-fashion
- By spring 2013, 1990s inspired anti-fashion made a comeback in the UK and USA among women aged 18–30.[51] Popular clothings include geometric prints,[52] metallic jackets,[53] unusual fabrics like PVC,[54] leather pants, ugly sweaters,[55] and khaki superdry trenchcoats.[56]
- In the UK, from summer 2013 onwards, the skinny jeans of the mid-2000s began to be replaced with looser-fitting dungarees and the so-called mom jeans.[57]
- In fall 2013, the chunky black platform shoes fashionable in the mid 1990s made a comeback in Britain,[58] together with 1950s inspired brothel creepers and brogues or Oxford shoes.[59]
Black and white clothing
- Black and white clothing, popularized by Kate Moss and Cara Delvigne, became fashionable in the UK and China amongst celebrity circles[60] as minimalist fashion replaced the elaborate, colorful styles popular from 2004 to 2012.[61][62] These include white trenchcoats with black sleeves, biker jackets, houndstooth coats, and black Gothic-inspired tops with skulls or crosses embellished with rhinestones.[63]
- During the mid-2010s, it became popular to dress entirely in black while in attendance at formal events,[64] with long,[65] sometimes semi-transparent,[66] gowns[67] accessorized with 1930s-inspired elbow-length opera gloves and jewelery, typically with diamonds or other precious jewels (although costume jewelry is often worn as well). Occasionally a feather boa and/or a tiara will accompany this look.[68]
- In the United Kingdom, Australasia and the United States, women's cream blazers and tuxedo jackets often have contrasting black velvet or satin lapels.[69] Many young women in Brazil, Germany and the United Kingdom, wear black and white converse all-stars, as well as many young men in Brazil (who may still dress wholly in black and white), especially ubiquitous for those that were punks, metalheads, goths, emos, or scene kids for a part of their lives.[70]
- In China and North Korea, black and white (or occasionally red) polka dot dresses became fashionable from spring 2013 onwards.[71]
Onesies
- A unisex fad in February to April 2013 was the onesie: a one-piece garment similar to a child's blanket sleeper.[72] The onesie, frequently embellished with cartoon characters or intarsia patterns, was originally worn as pajamas but later as streetwear.[73] Notable celebrities who wear them include pop star Justin Bieber, Cheryl Cole, presenter Holly Willoughby, actor Brad Pitt, comedian Russell Brand, and pop group One Direction.[74]
3D printing
3D printed clothing became available at the high end of the market in the 2010s. Designer Iris van Herpen started showing 3D printed pieces as early as 2010 Amsterdam Fashion week.[75][76] In 2012, Continuum Fashions launched printed shoes.[77] In 2013, burlesque performer Dita Von Teese wore a gown printed into rigid nylon, specifically designed for her body.[78]
Men's clothing
Early 2010s (2010–2012)
Bright colors and retro styles
- Neon colors and elaborate T-shirts were popular for much of the early 2010s, especially graphic print hoodies, novelty socks, red or blue skinny jeans, studded belts with large buckles, and Ed Hardy T shirts embellished with rhinestones.[79] By fall 2012, the gaudy Ed Hardy shirts had largely gone out of fashion, except in the US, where the style maintains popularity amongst a certain subset of college-aged clubgoers,[80] who have been stereotyped as "guidos",[81] jocks and lounge lizards.[82]
- Many styles from the late 2000s remain fashionable in Europe, Australasia, and the Americas, including Polo Ralph Lauren, J Crew,[83] shawl collar cardigans,[84] V-neck t-shirts, acid wash denim work shirts,[85] cable knit pullovers,[86] Tartan flannel Western shirts with snap fastenings, grunge style padded tartan overshirts in red, navy blue or dark green,[87] throwback basketball or baseball uniforms,[87] turtle neck sweaters, denim jackets,[88] Aloha shirts, car coats,[89] 1930s style linen sportcoats, and black leather jackets like the Schott Perfecto.[90]
Indie look
- Indie fashions, which had gone mainstream by 2005, remain popular as of 2012, especially in the UK and Europe, where young men wear vintage clothing with shemaghs, nerd glasses, and aviator sunglasses,[91] often purchased from charity shops to save money due to the continued effects of the 2009 recession.[citation needed]
- Denim stretch-fit skinny jeans were fashionable until late 2012,[92][93] but have largely been replaced by bootcut jeans and straight leg jeans. However, tight-fitting chinos are popular summer wear for many young men in Britain, Italy and the US who wear bright pastel colors for a preppy look, or dark brown, khaki and grey for those seeking to identify with Bohemian or indie culture.[94][95]
- Common accessories include Ray-Ban wayfarer sunglasses, paisley scarfs, tortoise shell glasses,[96] snake skin[97] or plaited leather belts,[98] flat caps, newsboy caps, trilbys,[99] Fedoras, and pork pie hats.
Ivy League look
- Partly in response to the bright colors and elaborate styles, many young men dress in a more conservative style with short hair and clean-shaven faces. This 1950s preppy look spread from the US to the UK and Europe, where it was incorporated into the existing 1960s and 1990s-influenced indie look by many of the younger hipsters.[100] Common apparel included slim-fitting navy blue blazers, ascots, argyle golfing sweaters, oxford shirts, long sleeved polo shirts, khaki mackintoshes, sweater vests, and cream-colored aran sweaters.
- From 2010 to 2012, popular pants for British and American men include Cargo pants, Bermuda shorts, khaki chinos,[101] baggy jeans, and preppy Nantucket Reds. Colors like navy blue, grey, red, dark green, khaki, and white were popular.[87]
- Footwear popular in Europe and the US includes Uggs,[102][103] espadrilles,[104] straw hats, skechers, Oxford shoes, dress boots, boat shoes especially Sperry Top-Siders, retro sneakers like converse all-stars, Nike Air Jordans, or Vans, combat boots (often with zips on the side), Winklepickers, and Timberland work boots.[105]
Slim-fit suits
- In the early and mid-2010s, European and American formal designers imitate the fashions of the 1930s[106] and 1950s, including single-breasted suits with peaked lapels[107] inspired by the TV show Boardwalk Empire.[108] By 2010, the navy blue popular since the 1990s was replaced by grey or black,[109] and the stripes on pinstripe suits became narrower[110] and more closely spaced.[111]
- In the UK, Italy, and US, many men wear slim fit grey mohair or houndstooth office suits, usually with two-button fastening, a single vent, and narrow lapels[112] inspired by the American TV show Mad Men, Daniel Craig as James Bond,[113] and the 1960s revival of the mid-2000s.[114] Common accessories include dress shirts with rounded collars, trilby hats, thin ties, and velvet smoking jackets.[115]
Prewar influences
- In Britain and the Netherlands, there has been a resurgence of Edwardian fashions[116] including suits with contrasting piping,[117] boots based on US Civil War era Jeff Davis boots,[118] bowler hats,[119] Homburg hats, seersucker or tweed sportcoats, waistcoats, thin ties, Ascots, dress boots, cricket-style sleeveless sweaters (also very popular in India), cricket blazers with contrasting piping,[120] and striped boating blazers, albeit in less loud colors than the type worn by the mod subculture in the 1960s.[121][122][123] This retro style semi-formal wear, popular among indie kids, sloane rangers, and college students, is often paired with modern casual clothing, like Topman or Superdry T shirts, Jack Wills sweatpants, sneakers, scarfs, record bags, Doc Martens, and jeans.[124]
Mid-2010s (2013–16)
1990s revival
- By spring 2013, 1990s fashion had made a comeback in the UK, Australasia and the US due to the influence of Steves Peeps, an American artist famous for designing the costumes of pop star Lady Gaga.[125] Common items of clothing include chinos, grunge style padded tartan overshirts, crewneck sweatshirts, beige cargo pants, Chucks, combat boots, throwback basketball or baseball uniforms, and preppy Nantucket Reds. The ankle-high sport socks of the early 2000s (known as "trainer liners" in the UK) went out of fashion in favor of socks reaching the mid calf. Other popular trends include sweatpants, uggs, Nike sneakers, baseball caps, woodland camouflage shirts,[126] Sperry Top-Siders, and snapback hats inspired by Mac Miller.[127] Some believe that this is a response to the 1960s inspired hipster subculture,[128][129] popularized by British indie pop bands since 2003.[130][dead link ]
- By Spring 2013, dark coloured chinos and loose fitting straight leg jeans such as dungarees or Levi 501s started to appear alongside the more common skinny jeans in the UK.[131] These came in both the pale blue of the 1980s, and the dark selvedge denim of the 1990s.[132] Many were often worn with bomber jackets, black leather jackets, crombie overcoats, brown Oxford shoes, and classic Nike trainers.[133] New trends in the UK include olive green blazers worn with blue leaf-print shirts, tweed cloth waistcoats, linen or chambray shirts,[134] and scarfs in bright earth tones.[135] Colors like navy blue, grey, burgundy, dark green, teal, khaki, and white were popular.[87]
Outdoor wear
- By the end of 2012, practical winter clothing with retro styling became popular in the UK, especially knitted Scandinavian-style "ugly sweaters" with shawl lapels[136] and throwback anoraks based on those worn by Edmund Hilary's Mount Everest Expedition,[137][138] in colors like blue, orange and yellow. British and European men also wear country clothing like Barbour jackets,[139] waxed jackets, 1980s style sheepskin coats, Navy blue peacoats,[140] tweed topcoats,[141] double-breasted raincoats,[142] and Belstaff safari jackets.[143][144]
- Western fashion trends have been inspired by World War II and Cold War military uniforms, with trenchcoats, dress uniforms, combat boots and epaulettes on casual button-down shirts and jackets.[145] Beginning in fall 2012, woodland camo M65 jackets, cargo pants, desert boots, Doc Martens, and anoraks were popular, in colors like olive green, burgundy, khaki, forest green and brown.[146]
Youth fashion
Indie and hipster
- By 2011, indie clothing had largely moved away from the bright colors and overt 1960s styling of the mid-2000s in favor of a more "grown up" intellectual look, with earth-tones like grey, burgundy, brown, teal, and beige.[147] Tweed jackets, chino trousers, dress boots, fedoras, 2fer and layered shirts and tees, cardigan sweaters, and nerd glasses replaced the skinny jeans,[148] winklepickers, velvet jackets, aviator sunglasses, and skinny ties typically worn by indie rock bands, although Western shirts, leather jackets and military dress uniforms remained popular.[149]
- In England, vintage clothing, especially checked shirts sourced from thrift stores, and homemade jewellery, are popular among girls and boys alike. [150][151]
- Drop crotch pants designed by the Danish brand Hümor became more and more popular in Europe amongst hipsters and hip hop fans who replaced their skinny jeans and carpenter jeans with "old school but modern" style.[152] In urban areas of the USA, like Manhattan, many male hipsters began wearing women's leggings paired with sweaters, thick wool socks, and boots.[153]
Scene kids
- In some parts of the United States, in particular California, a mix of hip-hop, emo, scene, and indie fashion became common, especially skinny jeans, trucker hats, Nike shoes, mismatched neon green, flourescent yellow or hot pink socks worn with sneakers or Sperry Top-Siders boat shoes, 2fer and layered shirts, tees and polos, Vans, Levi's 501 jeans,[154] Dickies shorts, pocket watches,[155] flannel shirts, thin ties, Chucks, Keds, vintage tees,[156] plain tees with contrasting edging, and Vans.[157] Shirts and hoodies with messages such as "cool story bro" or the logos of music like Brokencyde, Blood on the Dance Floor and 3OH!3 became popular among scene kids.
- By 2012, many scene kids had abandoned the cartoon print hoodies, skinny jeans and studded belts in favor of a more hardcore/skate punk look with wifebeaters, plain hoodies, combat boots, Vans, tapered jeans, and stretched earlobe piercings,[130] except in parts of Latin America, like Fortaleza, where late-2000s scene and emo fashion remained common.[158]
Classic preppy
- American preppies and British Sloane Rangers have moved away from the hip-hop influenced fashions of the early 2000s and begun to dress in a more classic 1950s Ivy League style[159] with sweaters, Sperry Top-Sider boat shoes, Aran sweaters, cardigans, Oxford shirts, Cricket pullovers, wingtips, stripy polo shirts, hats like the fedora, khaki or pastel colored Vineyard Vines, Nantucket Reds, white or bright pastel color socks worn with sneakers and Sperry Top-Sider boat shoes, colored jeans, baseball jackets, and tapered chinos.[160]
- Preppy girls wear flip flops, ballet flats, Keds, Sperry Top-Sider boat shoes, layered shirts and tees, capri pants, ankle length pants and colored jeans, opaque tights, footless tights, plaid skirts, cotton shorts in pastel colors, Uggs, Hunter brand rain boots, leg warmers, white or pastel colored jeans, knee socks especially with flat knee high riding boots and a dress or skirt or over skinny jeans, flat knee high riding boots, jeans especially skinny and colored jeans, jeggings, capri or ankle length leggings worn with shorts, dresses and skirts, oversized sweaters, bike shorts with or without lace trim, 3/4 length sleeved shirts, 2fer shirts and layered shirts, layered tees and layered polos, sweatshirts bearing the name and crest of the school or college, and Nike Tempo Shorts as gym wear and everyday wear sometimes with capri or ankle length leggings underneath and sneakers or sometimes Sperry Top-Siders.
Skater and Sneakerhead fashion
- Beginning in Spring 2012, members of the Skater subculture wear designer streetwear rather than the functional hardcore punk and grunge clothing of the 1990s, or the brightly colored scene fashions of the early 2010s. Common apparel includes Snapback hats, Diamond Supply Co. apparel, Air Jordan apparel, The Hundreds T-Shirts, Obey bar logo T-Shirts and snapbacks, Hoodies, Tracksuits, Hollister T-shirts, Vans, Chucks, Levi's jeans,[161] Nike skate shoes and T-Shirts, DGK, Adidas Skateboarding and Originals apparel and shoes, and LRG apparel.[162]
- An offshoot of the skater subculture, known as "sneakerheads", dress similarly, with Nike Air Jordans, Nike SBs, Vans, designer sportswear, True Religion jeans, baseball caps, Skullcandy headphones, Ray-Ban Aviators, and Nixon watches.[163]
Hip-hop
- Hip-hop fans wear tactical pants, Nike Air Jordans, Ralph Lauren Polo Boots, Obey and Diamond Supply Co. T-Shirts and snapbacks, Hollister T shirts, and goggle jackets.[164][165] Retro 1980s fashions like snapbacks, skinny acid wash jeans, Baseball caps, Baseball jackets, Tracksuits, Varsity Jackets, Vans, Chuck Taylors, Rain boots, Retro Nikes, Shell Tube socks, Denim jackets, Levis, Adidas and Nike apparel, Gold Chains and Ray Ban Sunglasses, Air Jordans, oversized sweaters, and colors like red, green, and yellow, made a comeback in the African American community due to the influence of drum and bass, rave music, and indie pop-inspired rappers. Brands such as "Supreme" rise in popularity (Popularized by hip hop collective Odd Future) as well as floral print items and tie-dye items. Button-down shirts are often worn fully buttoned, rather than the partially buttoned looks sported elsewhere.
- Fashion designers such as Raf Simons and Rick Owens begin to gain a new popularity within hip hop, popularized by rappers such as Kanye West and A$AP Rocky. Such designers inspire a "darker" aesthetic (dubbed "Street goth" by some) involving monochromatic colour schemes (usually black or grey), extra-long shirts usually sporting over-sized neck openings and asymmetrical hems, skinny jeans that are worn with long inseams and an aggressive taper to cause bunching up or "stacks" near the ankle (A style heavily popularized and sported by rapper Kanye West.) and high top sneakers. Black boots, leather jackets, denim vests, bombers, monochrome sports jerseys, waxed jeans, black varsity jackets, tapered sweatpants, drop-crotch trousers, layering shorts over leggings and occasionally floral print are all popular trends within this style as well. Other notable rappers that sport this look include Kendrick Lamar, Danny Brown, and MC Ride.
Steampunk
- An American and Japanese take on the Neo-Edwardian fashion popular in Britain draws heavily upon the steampunk genre, including goggles,[166] respirators, brass gears, pocket watches, leather, silver or brass jewellery, and darker colors like brown,[167] grey and black.[168][169] Members of this subculture often combine elements of Steampunk fashion with Lolita, Elegant Gothic Aristocrat,[170] traditional Japanese clothing, old military dress uniforms, and vintage clothing from the Victorian and Edwardian eras.[171]
Latin American particularities
This section may require copy editing. (August 2013) |
- In Mexico, many members of the cholo and lowrider subcultures combine hip-hop fashion with Western shirts, traditional charro jackets, Stetsons, skinny jeans,[172] and Cowboy boots[173] with elongated toes: an extreme version of the 1960s-inspired pointy boots popular in mid-2000s Britain.
- In Brazil, neon colorido fashion, popularized by teen pop groups like Restart, and indie kids (that in South America do not represent a group separated of hipster fashion), eclipsed to a degree the emo-pop and other dark-themed scene youth fashions popularized by emo-pop/pop punk bands like NX Zero and Fresno.[158] Somewhat similar in appearance to the apparel of British and American scene kids, the brightly colored colorido clothing was particularly popular in the central big cities like São Paulo, Curitiba, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Campo Grande and Cuiabá for much of the early 2010s,[174] where emo-pop fashion was brought to Brazil and was also most popular, leading to a sudden marked difference and to the recognition of the coloridos as the continuation of the emos (what is an unpopular impression, sometimes taken as an insult, among members of both groups). The style lasted until mid-2013, when both the gaudy cartoon print and the neon clothing went out of fashion except in some Northern and Northeastern Brazilian cities, such as Manaus and Fortaleza.
Hair and makeup of the 2010s
Women's hairstyles
- In the United States, younger women favour volumized curly hair,[175] feathered hair,[176] and headbands of all sizes colors, and designs. The pixie cut and bob cut are popular in Japan, the Caribbean, urban Southeastern Brazil, and New York.[177] In spring 2012, jet black hair inspired by Katy Perry, Megan Fox and Kim Kardashian, has become increasingly popular among young American women, especially those who are naturally brunettes,[178] while bleached blonde hair remains common in the UK.[179] From mid-2012 many people started to dye their hair in an ombré style. Many African-American women favor natural, Afro-textured hair in reaction to the damage caused by relaxers, opting instead for natural products to style their hair.
- As of 2011, Brazilian women, especially those straight- and wavy-haired from the Southeastern and Northeastern regions of the country, favor informal mid- and long-haired female versions of a "faux-hawk" (actually a marked and high topknot, not involving a real special haircut), the so-called [topete moicano] Error: {{Lang}}: text has italic markup (help), [moicano festa] Error: {{Lang}}: text has italic markup (help) or [moicano feminino] Error: {{Lang}}: text has italic markup (help), as a casual all-purpose hairstyle, used for everything but formal workplace, and is ubiquitous in parties.[180][181][182]
- European and southern Brazilian women favor the ponytail, messy bun,[183] hime cut popularized by the girl with the dragon tattoo Rooney Mara,[184] and the French braid popularized by Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games. In Britain the long, straight or wavy side-banged hair of the late-2000s remains popular,[185] often kept in place with a cloth headband[186] or plastic Alice band.
Men's hairstyles
- For European men over 25, short hair is considered mainstream,[187] although it has become increasingly popular since the mid-2000s to grow it out "short with texture", with blunt ends inspired by contemporary pop groups and the young James Dean.[188] 1940s and 1950s haircuts have undergone a revival, with many British professionals wearing businessman's haircuts with side partings,[189] quiffs[190] or slicked back hair.[191][192]
- Since the late 1990s, and generalizing to most places and social classes as of the early 2010s, in urban non-Southern Cone South America (traditional and worker class Argentine, southern Brazilian, Uruguayan and Chilean men have long been not religiously keen to short hair), hair cut after the ear level or longer among white, mestizo or generally straight- and wavy-haired men using it unkempt (it was kind of acceptable for black men to wear afros, dreadlocks or similar hairstyles, but not men of other races) is no longer avoided in most mainstream workplaces or seen as a taboo, characteristic of homosexuality or loyalty to adolescent, rebellious or left-leaning subcultures – the military dictatorships that ruled much of the region in the mid-to-late 20th century often forced the adoption of traditional gender roles at all spheres of public life, and labelling those males not fitting to them as left-wingers, thus 'immoral', 'anti-social', 'vagabonds' or what else negative connotations the government propaganda accused at them –, and can be used without attracting unwanted attention or comments at pretty much everywhere (actually, they started to attract positive mainstream straight female attention, after love for such being many decades confined to the rock music fanbase).[182][193][194][195]
- In the United States, goatees[196] and short haircuts like the buzzcut remain popular, especially among older, balding men.[197] For African-American men, cornrows, mohawk variants of the hi-top fade, Afro, 360 Waves and jheri curl were popular in the early 2010s. By 2013, many black men favor shaved patterns or "steps" into variants of the buzzcut.
- In Britain, the United States and Australia, facial hair was a defining characteristic of male hipsters,[198] who embraced it for its historical associations of masculinity and artistry, as well as its perceived anti-corporate connotations. Full beards and particularly mustaches were popular amongst hipsters; neatly trimmed, short goatees were eschewed for their established popularity among mainstream American men.[199] Many hipsters who grew mustaches groomed them in styles popular in various historical eras, such as the Victorian age or the 1970s; such mustaches were known as "ironic mustaches", or, pejoratively, "hipster mustaches".[200] The ubiquity of facial hair amongst hipsters led to numerous celebrities beginning to grow full beards, which in turn led to a crossover of beards into mainstream American culture.[199]
Youth hairstyles
- From the mid-2010s on, the bangs (hairstyle) and headband combination has remained popular among teenage and college girls, especially those associated with the indie, preppy and scene subcultures. Common colors and designs include black velvet, animal print, hot pink, electric blue, white plastic, and red paisley (often fashioned from folding a bandana).[citation needed] Ponytails are still popular, especially when exercising or playing sports. Side ponytails and side braids are popular sometimes in combination with bangs (hairstyle).
- In the early 2010s, emo style fringes went out of fashion[201][202] and an increasing number of scene kids began to cut their hair short for a hardcore punk look, a move away from the androgynous big hair and heavy bangs popular in the late-2000s.[203]
- In the United States and Australia, side-swept surfer hair and the wings haircut became popular among teenage and college-age surfers, preppy boys and members of the skater subculture from 2010-2013.[204] During the mid-2000s, this haircut was mostly popular among the skater, surfer, indie, [stronda playsson] Error: {{Lang}}: text has italic markup (help) and emo subcultures of the US, UK, and Brazil, but gained mainstream popularity between 2008-2013 when it was worn by pop stars like Justin Bieber, Harry Styles, Matthew Followill,[205] and Jake Bugg.[206]
- On the West Coast of the United States, many young men aged 16–25 dye their hair blond to appear "sun-kissed", or as if the hair is naturally lightened and textured from frequently spending time in the sun and/or at the beach. The look is particularly popular among "pretty boy" actors and pop singers, including Owen Wilson, Ashton Kutcher,[207] Jedward,[208] and Niall Horan.[209]
- Undercuts (nicknamed "Hitler Youth haircuts"),[210][211] pompadours,[212] beards, and wide unkempt mohawks, replaced the side-banged hair and long 1970s mod haircuts popular among older hipsters.
- In Britain, many teenage boys favour the quiff, which was popularised in the early 2010s by television personalities such as Joey Essex, Jedward, Ant and Dec, and the cast of Geordie Shore.[213] Inspired by MMA fighters, many chavs and ravers wear a type of short mullet or fauxhawk,[214] with a single blonde stripe down the center and patterns known as train tracks shaved into the sides.[215]
- Around 2012, a long undercut or mohawk-like haircut, in which only one side of the head is buzzed, became popular among circles of ravers, metalcore, and dubstep fans in the US, possibly because of its similarity to that of musician Skrillex.[216] The High Top Fade, often with a bleached blonde streak inspired by Wiz Khalifa, came back into style among African American youth on the West Coast; variations include the Gumby, a slanted box with one side higher than the other, and the Stairsteps, where the High Top is made uneven and gradually goes up higher.[citation needed]
- In Latin America, the faux-hawk rebirthed as fashionable among working class teenage boys, who imitated the hairstyles of musicians and footballers like Neymar.[217][218][219][220] By the mid-2010s it spread into middle and upper class hipster fashion, and when combed over,[221] becomes a very popular haircut among the LGBT community in Southern Brazil, despite the disapproval of conservatives within the church and government.[222]
Makeup and body modifications
- Tattoos and body piercings, popularised in the 1990s, are ubiquitous in early 2010s Europe, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United States and urban Center-Southern Brazil.[223][224] Some of the more extreme include flesh tunnels, snakebites, nose piercings, and Monroe piercings.[223] Tattoos and piercings are worn not only by teenagers and young adults, but also by many businesspeople ages 26–40.[225]
- In Britain, the minimalist makeup of the late 2000s carried on as a trend in many parts of the country, whilst growing out of fashion in other areas as women sought to imitate the fake tan and thick "Scouse brow" popularized by Kate Middleton and the cast of The Only Way is Essex and Desperate Scousewives.[226] In 2012, many women tattoo wedding rings on their fingers to symbolise what they view as the permanence of marriage.[227]
