Ashton Meadows Public School (also known as A.M.P.S., AMPS, or simply Ashton) is a public elementary school in Markham, Ontario, Canada. It was named after nearby Ashton Meadows Park. Prior to being named, the school was known as "Buttonville-North” in honour of its location and in reference to the holding school, Buttonville P.S.

Ashton Meadows Public School is a feeder school for Pierre Elliott Trudeau High School.

History

Ashton Meadows Public School was officially opened in 1997. Prior to being named, the school was known as "Buttonville North" in honour of its location and in reference to the holding school, Buttonville Public School. Ashton is located in the western area of Markham. The school attendance area is bounded on the south by Sixteenth Avenue, on the east of Woodbine Avenue, on the west of Warden Avenue, and on the north by the homes on Personna Boulevard.

A child-care centre, Ashton Meadows Child Care, owned and operated by Upper Canada Child Care, is located at Ashton Meadows. The centre staff work closely with teachers and parents and administration to support students attending the school.

Growth and demographics

Ashton Meadows currently totals 390 students.[1] Fifty-three percent are male and forty-seven percent are female. 21.5% of students speak Cantonese at home, and there are several other languages spoken as well. Approximately 17.3% of the students are at ESL stages 1–4. Also, 7.5% of the students are identified with special education learning needs.

School events

Ashton Meadows Public School hosts and organizes several school and community events. The most notable ones include The Remembrance Day Assembly and The May Show. Other events include The Winter Electives, The Annual BBQ, The Halloween Dance and The Graduation Dance. Separate events are held for the Child Care Centre.

Athletics

Ashton Meadows has volleyball, basketball, and badminton teams. The teams are known as the Ashton Meadows Ambassadors.

Some of the Ashton Meadows Cross Country team members placed in the top 15 of their age group and qualified to compete in the York Region Meet at Bruce's Mill.[when?]

The intermediate boys basketball team went on to be regional champions in early 2007. The junior boys basketball team went on to be Aurora and Discovery tournament winners in early 2008, they finished the season 22-2. The intermediate boys basketball team went to the regionals in early 2009, they finished the season 16-6. The intermediate boys basketball team won the area and went on to be the regional champions in 2010, finishing the season 11–4. The Ashton Meadows Badminton team won the banner in their area and regionals with the most points in the 2006–07 season.
