Roman Zolanski
Roman is a gay male, not a woman. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.113.112.169 (talk) 04:17, 18 September 2011 (UTC)
- Since I can't do it myself... can an administrator please clear up the choppiness of a sentence in the first paragraph?
- It reads "is a recording artist acquiring fame after being signed to Young Money."
- I believe it should read "is a recording artist who acquired fame after being signed to Young Money." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zachsafteryou (talk • contribs) 23:53, 12 October 2011 (UTC)
- her accent is mockney not typical british! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.6.83.158 (talk) 23:29, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
- (Not sure where this question should go...) Was Minaj in Every Girl, the first single of Young Money Entertainment's We Are Young Money album? I cleaned up the English in the second paragraph of the 2007-2009 section, but I also removed reference to the Every Girl single because I think Minaj wasn't on it. She's not listed on the Every Girl page or the relevant tracklist for the album. Magnabonzo (talk) 01:24, 10 November 2011 (UTC)
- The person [above] is correct, Roman Zolanski is a gay male. The other facts stated about him, and his mother, are true. In her televised documentary titled "My Time Now" she discusses Roman and how he came to be, stating that he is a gay male who was born out of rage. She also states that he says the things she cannot.
http://www.spin.com/articles/nicki-minajs-roman-zolanski-alter-ego-brief-biography Please clear this untrue statement up as soon as possible. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.220.183.43 (talk) 07:53, 9 December 2011 (UTC)

Under Personal Life, please remove the link to the Kinsey Scale entry in the following sentence: "There are so many shades in the middle, and you’ve got to let people feel comfortable with saying what they want to say when they want to say it."
This is just bad form generally, and probably violates some BLP guideline. She didn't state she was talking about the Kinsey Scale specifically or even indicate she knew of its existence. Besides, the scale is just one measure of the thing, not the thing itself (i.e. she's talking about a range of sexualities, not the psychological evaluation/analysis of a range of sexualities). 71.192.247.162 (talk) 09:51, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Musical style
- SHE NEEDS a musical style section !!! she has different syles shes pop/R&b/RAP and also ass her different accents every artist have one of these Nicki is a huge icon and even just her Wikipedia page will make people think of her that way and also change the picture to something more recent because that really doesnt represnt her style and image now.

Minaj/ménage reference
Even in Nicki Minaj's earliest work, it is clear that the name "Minaj" is sexual innuendo—a pseudo-Hindi version of ménage based off her actual last name, Maraj. I think this is worth noting in the article as sexuality was a very important part of her image before she gained her current fame. Before all of today's rappers did their "have a ménage like Nick" punchlines, Nicki herself did them and it's clear that this was an important reflection of her act at the time; even a few more recent songs like "Lil Freak" and "Monster" have such jokes included. I cannot edit this article myself, but I do believe that this is of great significance as means of explaining her stage name. Mhavril39 (talk) 09:34, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
- With a valid reference to support the intent of her name to sound like this (which, as a French speaker, it is obvious), it becomes original research, and this not allowable. For example, Bruce Cockburn has nothing to do with a flaming penis (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 10:09, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

Edit request - 2004 WWE release
The article makes it sound like she wasn't really active until 2007, but in 2004, with The Hood$tars she did the vocals on Victoria's entrance music, "Don't Mess With," that was released on ThemeAddict: WWE The Music, Vol. 6. There, she was credited as Nicki Maraj. This is verified by an official press release at the time of the album's release: http://top40-charts.com/news.php?nid=11223. I think this is a pretty notable event that should be added, since it was a commercial release on a Top 40-reaching album a few years before she hit it "big." — Chad1m Email Talk Cont. 18:59, 11 March 2012 (UTC)

Other ventures
Please may you add an Other ventures section to Nicki Minaj's. I dont see why the person who controls this page is so petty and stubborn, you should also take other consideration being that your not the only one who goes on Nicki Minaj's Wikipedia. If you such a Nicki Minaj FAN/STAN than you WOULD KNOW she has OTHER VENTURES how many references do WE need to prove. It's been all over Tv,her Twitter account, and other places. She had a MAC Lipstick in November 2010 I believe called "Pink 4 Friday" which was sold out in 2 hours. Also she has her own nails with OPI "Its MAC,OPI, and a fragrance too, appareal I'm dominating in every avenue" - From Make Me Proud with Drake. And also her Viva Glam Lipstick with Ricky Martin. And this has alot to do with Nicki Minaj this is showing her as a businesswoman. Other rappers/singers have Other venture sections on their page so obviously it does apply to them. She also is the new face of Pepsi "Pop" on Forbes.com, and
She also shot a Pepsi commercial in Argentina. There is footage on Youtube. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.223.193.157 (talk) 03:40, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

Nicki also collaborated with Madonna for another song from her album
Not just Give Me All Your Luvin' but also a track called "I Don't Give A". She revealed the track list less than a week before its released and so this information just arose now. I reckon it should be worth mentioning in this article and also since she's the only featured artist for that song not like GMAYL. Just a short sentence would be fine. Nicki is also still endorsing products for Pepsi, which she shot a commercial for in Argentina, she was initially planned to film a 7-up commercial but was replaced by Cee Lo Green as stated in her song "Come on A Cone" .http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/breaking/chi-pepsi-to-team-with-nicki-minaj-but-not-on-pop-20120328,0,7135888.story

- Not all of the claims above are substantiated by the sources. For instance, the Chicago Tribune story says she's in some business arrangement with Pepsi, but that it won't be to endorse a new drink. It mentions nothing about Argentina, 7-Up, Green, or the song. —C.Fred (talk) 18:05, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
- In her song Come on A Cone she explained all of the endorsment with Pepsi, so can the other stuff I put in be put into an other ventures section for Nicki Minaj until I prove the Pepsi thing right? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.223.193.157 (talk) 22:01, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
- No. Two sentences—one about Pepsi, one about the deal with adidas—aren't enough to warrant a section. —C.Fred (talk) 22:14, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
- What? This is like a whole paragraph. The Pink 4 Friday lipstick/The VivaGlam/ The Nokia one/Casio/OPI nails... and other stuff. Look at the influences section its not even 3 sentences and its there. So can you please add it, why wouldn't you want people to know more about Nicki Minaj since you control her page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.223.193.157 (talk) 23:15, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
- If the lipstick, nails, etc. were significant enough to be covered in the article, there should be independent reliable sources to cite, not just Minaj's or the company's website. —C.Fred (talk) 23:59, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
- Ok thats just YOUR opinion, your clearly abusing your power, why can't you simply add the Other ventures section and call it a day, I don't see what the big deal is. If you are a TRUE Nicki Minaj fan you would be taking all the things people have said into consideration. I showed you my sources so what else do you want ? What would be more reliable than Nicki Minaj's very own website giving you the source ? It's all set in stone. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.223.193.157 (talk) 03:45, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
- And I have different links not just from mypinkfriday.com So how many links do I have to find now? If you can't even take the very own person's website that have RELIABLE SOURCES, then what else do you need ? Minaj can't lie about what she has done she's in the public eye. So can you please stop being so petty, and I'm trying to say thhis very nicely, you should be happy that there are concerned fans wanting the best for their artist. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.223.193.157 (talk) 03:51, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
- Please review WP:Self-published sources. I am not suggesting that she would lie, but there is always the incentive to overstate what one has done (or understate one's age). That's why Wikipedia prefers (and in some cases insists on) secondary sources to support statements in articles—if it's been reported in a newspaper or magazine, then it's been reviewed by editors before it was printed, so we place more reliance on that source than one written by the subject's press agent or the subject herself. That has nothing to do with how much I like Minaj and everything to do with Wikipedia policies like WP:Verifiability.
- That said, I'm going to alert Bwilkins (talk · contribs) to this discussion. Since he had participated in the prior discussions, I'll see if the sources change his perspective on the situation, or if he still feels that there should not be a section on other ventures. —C.Fred (talk) 12:31, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
- The majority of celebrity endorsements are not notable, whatsoever. Indeed, in most cases, there's no direct link between the celebrity and the product other than being paid to lend one's face to it. For example, Michael Jackson's is not notable for having done a Pepsi commercial - it's only notable because his hair caught fire while filming it. Wikipedia's goal is not to promote the various products/endeavours/endorsements that someone is involved it, and it adds undue weight to those products.
- There needs to be zero argument about using the person's own website as a source is not considered to be a reliable source - it's a core policy on Wikipedia.
- This is also not a fan page - it's an encyclopedia entry. The number of blocks that have been handed out due to extensive WP:FANCRUFT is a pretty long list. Cruft and promotion do not belong; period. (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 16:54, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
It doesnt matter if this a fan page or encylcopedia, people come on Wikipedia to learn about what people have done, Nicki Minaj is more than just a girl from Queens who put out two albums, shes a businesswoman, and if other ventures don't matter than why do I see Lady GaGa,Rihanna, Jay-Z. and other musicians with other ventures sections ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.223.193.157 (talk) 22:43, 14 April 2012 (UTC)
- Other stuff exists; "Rihanna has an other ventures section" is not a valid reason for Minaj to have one. That said, Gaga has a foundation and Jay-Z owns several businesses; those activities are significant enough in scope to warrant coverage, and that's why those articles have sections on them. The section on Rihanna's other activities is extensively sourced. Accordingly, consensus there is that the activities are significant enough to be covered. However, there is no clear consensus to include a similar section in Minaj's article. —C.Fred (talk) 00:39, 15 April 2012 (UTC)
- Well can you add something similar to other ventures since you object everything anyone has to say? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.223.193.157 (talk) 19:45, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

Major BLP concern
I have a major WP:BLP issue. While using a Dallas Police Complaint form as a source is I guess OK, I'm concerned that the article presents no context for said report. If we're going to cite a legal matter, then we need to include a reference in the article with a link to a media report. Otherwise I think it violates BLP. Was she cleared? Found guilty? Is it still before the courts. This must be included otherwise I don't think we can use that source. 70.72.223.215 (talk)

why is hip hop not listed under her genres? she's is primarily known for being a rapper. you need to add hip hop on her genres. also she does r&b as well. some sources include: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beam_Me_Up_Scotty_(mixtape) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink_Fridaythis these links are from her album and mixtape they both clearly list her genres as having primarily hip and r&b and don't say "not done" because I made a clear request and listed two sources. 98.169.33.3 (talk) 02:42, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
- Wikipedia articles cannot be used as sources for other Wikipedia articles. Also, since Miss Minaj is a living person, very high standards of referencing for assertions about her apply. If published reliable sources state that she is a hip hop artist, then of course that information can be added.
- What I think you might be referring to is the appearance of her article as of 22:15 4 May 2012. Her musical genre was changed from hip hop to "Euro pop" with this edit. Since Europop is not mentioned in the article and Hip Hop is, I have changed the genre back to its previous appearance which included "hip hop". Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 03:12, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
- Please do not add random genres to the infobox. Mozart and Nicki Minaj are not hiphoppers. Arcandam (talk) 12:10, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

Minaj also became popular by having a secret sexual affair on rapper Safaree Samuels with a young female called Rhianon Stockley-Hughes from the United Kingom. This was said to have happened on 8th March 2009. After the rumors came out Nicki was then rumored to be bisexual. Nicki was also she was linked to this by stating some raunchy lyrics in her songs referring to girls. Minaj and 'Rhi' were then later seen leaving a hotel in Miami holding hands as they waited for there ride home. Xlil rhix (talk) 12:04, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

edit request: please add diacritic marks to the romanization of her tattoo
The more correct romanization of her tattoo with diacritic marks is
shàngdì yǔ nǐ cháng zài
You can easily verify this by clicking on each of the Chinese characters listed and looking for the accented pronunciation under "pinyin". Technically the marks are important to proper reading of the tattoo especially for learners of Mandarin.

- The Barbie doll might have been the one of these worth mentioning, if it had gone into regular mass production. That would be a sign that the toy industry was acknowledging her achievements. However, it's a special customized doll, and only one will be made. Custom Barbies don't quite reach the same level, so on the whole, I don't think the doll warrants a mention in the article. —C.Fred (talk) 12:38, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

- I work through my watchlist chronologically, so I saw the discussion before I saw the edits to the article. There is now a "Products and endorsements" section in the article. It's a one-paragraph section, but that's the level of detail that's called for at this point in her career. I have edited it some—I mentioned MAC by name in the article, but it made sense to structure the section with a parallel list, so it flowed better with the company name instead of "a cosmetics company." I think extreme caution needs to be taken before adding to the section, but I think including it helps the article overall. —C.Fred (talk) 12:47, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

There is sufficent enough of evidence, and reliable sources,or whatever else you try to impede for Nicki's article to have notable information on. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.223.193.157 (talk • contribs) 11:38, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
- I'm a big advocate of following the policies of Wikipedia. It is NOT the intent of an encyclopedia to provide multiple opportunities to WP:PROMOTE companies who pay her to hock their wares. Becoming a mouthpiece for a company is not a sign that someone "has become successful" - it's a sign that someone is using your success to further build their own - a form of slavery. Most Trini's I know are more than acutely aware of indentured servitude, and such servitude by Minaj merely detracts from her "independent" nature. Although I understand that one needs to make money while there's money to be made, we are not using Minaj's article to sell Pepsi or makeup. (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 11:50, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
- Whoa, it has become clear that you obviously have a problem with the Trinidian race. So that's the reason behind all your mischeif as we can all see. I think that if her race is really bothering that much that you shouldn't be on her page. (Personal attack removed) It's 2012 I thought racism would have died down, especially over the Internet where we are all one. I think that the only people who should have a authority over someone's Wikipedia page is someone who is up-to-date,consistent,devoted and also somewhat fond of that person. Not someone who is late on information, and also won't take others advice. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.223.193.157 (talk) 03:15, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
- "you obviously have a problem with the Trinidian race" - There's not such thing as "Trinidian". As to whether there's such a thing as a "Trinidadian race" - well, I suspect that Black Stalin might agree with the idea ("one race, the Caribbean man, from the same place...who make the same trip...on the same ship"), a literal reading of his words proved quite offensive to many Trinidadians. Please see the Trinidad and Tobago article for a better understanding of the topic. And as far as the attitude of Wikipedia editors to Trinidadian people, I believe that there are few editors who are more favourably inclined to we Trinidadians than BWilkins. Her Son
While in her "teen" years, young Nicki gave birth to a healthy, beautiful boy. Though she loved him she did not want to be a teen mom, in some of her songs she expresses her feelings as in one of her songs called "Fly" she says "Trying to forgive you for abandoning me". since she did no want to be a teen mom she put him up for adoption and is now 12 years old and lives in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Associated acts
I still don't think that David Guetta and Rick Ross meet the definition of "associated acts" as defined by Template:Infobox musical artist#associated acts. Both Guetta and Ross have featured/been featured by Nicki Minaj a couple of times for some songs, but that normally doesn't make someone an associated act (besides, Guetta features people all the time, so by that definition everyone is an associated act of him); in addition, while Guetta has helped in the production of Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, that too doesn't make someone an associated act. If there is something I've missed and they do meet the criteria, then that's fine, but at the moment I don't think they do, though I'm not going to revert over it. Thanks. Acalamari 08:14, 12 July 2012 (UTC)
Done I agree if we add Guetta and Ross then we would have to name all the artist she has collaborated with more than once on a feature. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1flyguyrob (talk • contribs) 03:20, 19 July 2012 (UTC)
- I agree with your sentiments about David Guetta in the sense that because so many artists have featured on his songs it would overload his and other infoboxes. However, the criteria for being an associated act includes "other acts with which this act has collaborated on multiple occasions". With Ross having collaborated with Minaj on 6 songs, Drake 5 songs and Lil Wayne 9 songs, I think these artists meet this criteria substantially. --Jennie | ☎ 16:27, 28 July 2012 (UTC)
- I was not aware they had all collaborated with Minaj that many times, it's worth including them then. I'm glad we agree on David Guetta, though. :) Acalamari 17:54, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

Using 'Maraj' in the early article sections.
Hello,
I've decided to bring over a discussion me and Steel1943 have been having on their talk page (here) concerning whether to use "Maraj" in the early sections and then use Minaj later on, or just use "Minaj" all the way through. WP:LASTNAME states: "For people well known by one-word names, nicknames or pseudonyms, but who often also use their legal names professionally (e.g. musician/actors Beyoncé Knowles, André Benjamin, Jennifer Lopez; doctor/broadcaster Dr. Drew Pinsky), use the legal surname". As Minaj does not use her legal name profesionally, I don't think "Maraj" should be used as the surname in the early sections of the article.
The guideline also states: "People who are best known by a pseudonym should be subsequently referred to by their pseudonymous surnames", as found on other recording artists' articles like Lady Gaga, despite having a legal name (Stefani Germanotta), the pseudonym or professional name (Gaga) is used throughout the article - including 'Early life'. I think we should keep Minaj throughout like previous and for consistency. Thoughts from other editors? :) Jennie | ☎ 09:39, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
- I agree I think Minaj should be used throughout the career beginnings paragraph. If she currently refers to hereself as Minaj, than that is what it should be under. 1flyguyrob | User talk:1flyguyrob 11:25, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
- I am opposed to this for a very specific reason: the use of her pseudonym "Nicki Minaj" is not mentioned until the end of the first "Career" paragraph. Per WP:LASTNAME, the very first sentence in the section starts off with "After the initial mention of any name...". With that being said, the mention of her name changing to "Nicki Minaj" doesn't happen until the end of the section, meaning all mentions of her name prior to that point should be "Maraj." Mentioning the name "Minaj" in regards to points in her career before she was known as "Minaj" will cause confusion to the reader, making the reader assume that she was known as "Minaj" when she was in Hood$tars. If anyone disagrees with what I am stating, I honestly feel like this discussion needs to be moved to MOS:BIO. This issue we are discussing is more of an issue with the way WP:LASTNAME is written. Thank you. Steel1943 (talk) 15:50, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
- When the WP:LASTNAME guideline states "After the initial mention of any name, the person should be referred to by surname only", this just refers to the practice of using a surname throughout an article and not calling them by the first name. It doesn't mean that you should necessarily use the first surname mentioned throughout. As demonstrated by the Lady Gaga article, the surname 'Gaga' is still used even when she hadn't adopted this pseudonym - the fact that "Minaj" adopted this later in life has no bearing on whether we shouldn't use it or not. It can be explained in narrative to the reader when she adopted this name and the fact she didn't use it in Hood$tars. If anything, using two surnames is more confusing to the reader and I don't think is present on many (or even any) articles on Wikipedia. I think we should revert it back to how it was, if you want to pursue this further we could WP:RFC? Jennie | ☎ 16:49, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
- Per the sentence "After the initial mention of any name, the person should be referred to by surname only", one could understand that as the way I do; a surname should not be used in an article until the moment in the article when "official" renaming of the person happens. To state, in this instance, that a person named "Nicki Minaj" was part of Hood$tars would be inaccurate (since, per the article, she didn't possess the name "Nicki Minaj" until after her involvement with that group.) I'm not stating that the first surname mentioned should be used throughout the article, as that would be inaccurate in biographies when a person changes their name one or more times.. Also, What I am stating is that the WP:LASTNAME section of MOS:BIO is not clear in regards to the issue and topic which we are debating. As I still think that WP:LASTNAME isn't clear in a precedent regarding this topic, and your statement is a matter of opinion (as well as mine), I do concur that there needs to be WP:RFC. However, since the article that I'm questioning is not Nicki Minaj, but rather Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Biographies, I'm moving this conversation over there (specifically here), and I'm going to tag the conversation with the WP:RFC template. (I'm not disputing Nicki Minaj; I'm disputing WP:LASTNAME.) Thank you. Steel1943 (talk) 00:34, 7 August 2012 (UTC)
- I've reverted your edits until a consensus for change is reached (as per WP:Reverting). Thanks. Jennie | ☎ 18:51, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

Twitch?
what's with the blinking?! is there some underlying tic there, or 100% an "act"?
either way, should be the FIRST THING mentioned under image! aside from the wigs and outfits, it is the number one thing associated with her.
heck, she even uses "blink" in her tweets now! 66.105.218.22 (talk) 20:20, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
- Not done - I'm not sure what the excessive blinking seen first in the Super Bass video and then in the video to Stupid Hoe means. I agree that it seems to be associated with her, but I can't find a single source on it. It's significance isn't mentioned anywhere. For now, I can't do anything without a source. If you find something on the internet, post it here and I'll see if I can put it in (the source has to be reliable, see here). Jennie | ☎ 22:19, 5 August 2012 (UTC)
- i'll look around, but in the meantime how about just a throwaway comment that her act "involves" heavy blinking? like in that line about being "animated" -- animated could mean a lot of things; in her case it just HAPPENS to primarily mean blinking.
- leave the "significance" of it out until a source is found. 66.105.218.14 (talk) 10:56, 9 August 2012 (UTC)
Barbz?
her fans are supposedly called "Barbz". i assume this comes from the (Harajuku) Barbie image. should be in the article! 66.105.218.22 (talk) 20:20, 31 July 2012 (UTC)\
- Done - I cannot believe the Barbz aren't mentioned in this article! I've added that, as well as information about her Twitter use in the "Public Image" section. Jennie | ☎ 16:45, 5 August 2012 (UTC)
- she actually attributes it to her "Pink Barbie" image, fwiw.
- where Harajuku ends and Pink begins, I don't know, but perhaps it would be better to use "Pink" in the article. 66.105.218.14 (talk) 10:47, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

- Reframing the question: is E! a sufficiently reliable source that we'll go with their reporting on her date of birth? —C.Fred (talk) 18:37, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
- I think E! meets the criteria of being a "well-established news outlet" and that information certainly isn't opinion content. Additionally, Minaj's official website endorses the source by linking to it. Is there a problem with sourcing a video though - does it meet WP:RS? I know transcripts are generally preferred... Jennie | ☎ 21:51, 5 August 2012 (UTC)
Not done - Updated - I was watching the E! documentary, and when Minaj is talking about her 5th grade teacher, they show clips of them together in November 1993. Knowing nothing about the American-grade system, I Googled and you are 10/11 in the 5th grade and as this was November, Minaj was 10 years old and would turn 11 the next month. 11 years old in December 1993 = 1993 - 11 = 1982. There are claims Minaj lied about her age, and as stated by the footnotes, the only reliable source is the one from the Police department. A lot of evidence points to her real birthdate being 1982 and unless we can find a reliable source for it being otherwise, we can't change it. Jennie | ☎ 12:55, 12 August 2012 (UTC)
We need images!
This is just a general message to anybody who may be passing by this article and is looking for ways to help. WP:FLICKR is probably the most common source for images (especially images of BLP's), but the Nicki Minaj images (with Creative-Commons "free" license) are few in number, of poor-quality and a bit old. We would really like to include images that are relevant to the sections of the article. Most prominently, the 2011 - present: Roman Reloaded section has none, and I know 1flyguyrob has tried hard to find some in this area, but has been met with copyvio restrictions (something I have also). It would be welcomed if anyone could upload and add some good-quality images to this article, maybe you have some from her concerts or tours on a camera/computer or just know where some are around the internet - anything would be appreciated really! I've recently nominated this article for GA status and relevant, free-use images form part of the criteria and would be useful.
I think the following sections could do with some decorating:
- 1.5 2011–present: Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded
- 2.2 Alter egos
- 3.1 Products and endorsement
- 4 Personal life
Thanks! :) Jennie | ☎ 18:19, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

I've had a quick look at the body of the article, but I've ignored the WP:Lead at this stage and I've not checked any of the references, on this basis the article appears to be at or about GA-level. I'm now going to work my way through the article, starting at Early life working my way to the end and then going back to do the Lead. This may take or day or so. - Early life -
- This looks OK, but I would like to make a comment about Note 1. It currently states: ".... The most definitive source, however, is the official Dallas Police Report from July 2011 which states her birthdate is 12/08/1982". Well the ref (ref 1) shows a redacted copy of part of the Dallas Police Report; and I assume that Nicki Minaj stated her DOB, but it might not have been checked (at that stage/if at all). I believe that all that can be claimed is (in my words, its not compulsory to use them) ... The most reliable source, however, is a redacted copy of the official Dallas Police Report from July 2011 which states her birthdate is 12/08/1982". (There is more than one use of the word redacted - I'm refering to the "hiding" of some information by printing a block of black ink over that information).

In 2001, she was cast in the off-Broadway play, "In Case You Forget".[19] After her acting career failed to take off, Minaj worked at Red Lobster in the Bronx at the age of 19 as a waitress and purchased her first vehicle, a BMW.[20] Other jobs Minaj held were administrative assistant, customer service, an an office manager position at an unknown business located on Wall Street.[21][22] and this subsection starts off: Minaj was fired from Red Lobster because of her discourteousness to other customers. She had been fired from at least fifteen jobs for similar antics.[23]. After, Minaj rapped in a foursome ....

- I'm not sure, but this does not appear to be a sentence: After, Minaj rapped in a foursome group called "Hoodstars" (stylized Hood$tars or H.O.O.D.S.T.A.R.S), which consisted of group members Scaff Beezy, Lou$tar, and 7even Up.[24]. It could mean: After trying other work/jobs <talk your pick>, Minaj rapped in a foursome group called "Hoodstars" ..... This statement should be the start of this paragraph, as everything else in the paragraph follows on from this - its all about rapping/music (and change of "stage name").

- As the article was changed on 20 August 2012 by this series of edits, I'll re-review the article from the beginning of Life and career.
- Life and career -
- 1982–2002: Early life -
- The first sentence of the first paragraph states: Onika Tanya Maraj was born December 8, 1982, yet Note 1 states that Minaj's birthyear has been reported in various media outlets as being 1984. As this is a biography of a living person (see Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons), and there is uncertainly when she was born a WP:Reliable source, should be provided to support this claim. Note: a redacted copy of a "crime report" published on web page does not constitute a reliable source.
- Done Probably the most talked about thing on the Talk-page and it's frequency of discussion caused me to put up a notice about any future requests to edit it, although I can understand the confusion. I think that Minaj may have lied in the early part of her career (and this has spread across the internet) as she allegedly claimed that she was born in 1984 rather than 1982. I tried to find a source when preparing the article for GA review but I found a lot of conflicting views. I am pretty certain that she is born in 1982, and have explained this in an edit request (Talk:Nicki Minaj#Birthdate)), the problem was finding a WP:RS that supported this. I've now removed the Dallas Police Report and replaced it with a source from MTV, which describes Minaj celebrating her 29th birthday in 2011. Jennie | ☎ 20:20, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
- The problem is that the article is dated Wednesday, 14 December 2011 and all it states is that "Nicki Minaj received a special treat for her 29th birthday, as Madonna and M.I.A. celebrated her big day on the set of their new music video ....", so she was probably born in December 1982. Pyrotec (talk) 10:25, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
- Hmm. Do you think it might be worth replacing the lead and first sentence with Onika Tanya Maraj (born December 8, 1982 or 1984), better known as Nicki Minaj? There is just no reliable way of proving either way. Although I said I was sure about it being 1982, I was searching around and in an interview last year, an interviewer suggested her age being 26 and she didn't bother to correct her. I think things might become more clear in December, as news outlets/fans may go ahead and wish her a Happy 30th (a milestone) - her reaction may be helpful. But, for now? Jennie | ☎ 11:47, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
- That would be OK. I was quite happy with the Note 1 that was present back here. The problem was the later edits whcih stated, without any reliable sources to back it up, that she was born on a certain date. I should point out, I have no personal preference between the two years and if there is no definitive answer I'd rather see a note saying that there is a difference of opinion in the various citations. - This subsection title lacks neutrality, and appears to be non-compliant with Wikipedia:Neutral point of view.
- The first sentence of the final paragraph appears to be non-compliant with Wikipedia:Neutral point of view. It states: "Minaj gained major success with the release of her single "Super Bass", ever since popular teen idols Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift showed their love of the song. Minaj and Swift performed the song on her Fearless Tour". It should be edited to comply with Wikipedia:Neutral point of view, or removed.

Infobox image
I noticed a debate going on about the image that is used in the infobox. While this image is more recent, in this image you can more clearly see her face, which is a requirement in an infobox image. The person is question must be easily recognizable. Thanks, Statυs (talk) 20:28, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
I am agreeing with you on this! I reviewed this in my Good Article Review.Deunick (talk) 23:03, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
- I don't think people would struggle to recognise her from that image, and I'm not quite sure where the requirements for Infobox images are. I quite like both, I just thought that it would probably more relevant to show her "in action". :) Jennie | ☎ 01:00, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
- The cotton ball one is superior, I think, but we could still use the bleach blonde photo elsewhere in the article. Slightly off-topic, but I've wanted to put a sound clip into this article for weeks now. I struggled to find an appropriate one, settling for a clip from "Roman Holiday". The song has so much cursing, I had to be careful with editing (since I couldn't find a clean version of the song anywhere). Let me know what you think. :) --Thevampireashlee (talk) 06:40, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
- Okay. I swapped the infobox image back to the cotton ball one. Seems like we all agree this photo is best. I moved the previous infobox image down to the article. I moved some of the other images around and removed the music video screen shot, since it was non-free and seemed slightly out of place. I wish we had a free-licensed image of her from 2007-08, but we've got to work with what we have. I found another image on Flickr, doctored it up as best I could, and added it in. Cleaned up some of the bare URL refs and added a few bells and whistles here and there. I think it's finally ready. --Thevampireashlee (talk) 08:41, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

Unless there are published sources that state that Minaj feels so strongly about the image/portrayal of women then I think the Image section covers this adequately. Jennie | ☎ 21:02, 21 August 2012 (UTC)
- Renaming the section "Female Empowerement" is still misleading and is original research. Where do sources support that she has empowered females? Furthermore, "Jezebel" [#102] is not a reliable source to support her views on women and neither is "Contact Music" [#105]. This section comprises of quotes that point to an view that is unsupported by published sources. Jennie | ☎ 21:21, 21 August 2012 (UTC)
- Female empowerment is not misleading, and I have provided reliable sources to this section, and the quotes will stress Minaj's thoughts on this issue and the publiced sources also supported her views on female empowerment 1flyguyrob —Preceding undated comment added 21:34, 21 August 2012 (UTC)

I dont think thats relevant to Nicki maybe we could add something more positive to her article like her Femnist views. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1flyguyrob (talk • contribs) 19:47, 21 August 2012 (UTC)
- The feud would become more relevant if reliable sources could be provided. Out of the one's added, I saw maybe one reliable source at best. Not enough to put something as defamatory as that, and stay within the safe borders of WP:BLP. However, we cannot omit it simply on the grounds that it's "negative". We're not here to cover up her past or make Nicki Minaj sound better than she is. We're only here to document the facts. That's it. --Thevampireashlee (talk) 20:08, 21 August 2012 (UTC)
- I sourced heavily from MTV and Billboard. I think MTV and Billboard meet WP:RS substantially. We also can't add or remove information based on whether it portrays her positively or negatively. You're both welcome to improve upon the section, it is only the first draft and written entirely from one person. Jennie | ☎ 20:19, 21 August 2012 (UTC)
- I, too, was wondering why this warrants any inclusion. Minaj (as well as Kim) have had various feuds with other artists which, from my understanding, is common in hip hop. --WWETrishMickiefan (talk) 22:44, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
- Something being "common" doesn't warrant exclusion either, as a biography of a living person it is essential that this article is broad in its coverage of all aspects of the persons life. Although it is true that Lil' Kim has had quite a few feuds in the past, Minaj hasn't had any high-profile ones (although her career is still young). It is a common feature of hip-hop and rap artists, but this feud spawned a mixtape, songs, critical opinion, celebrity comment and considerable media attention; it is mentioned in most interviews that both artists give and is still ongoing. I think it need its place on this article. Jennie | ☎ 23:33, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
**The Final (Hopefully) Big Birthdate/Age Discussion**
I think it's important to settle this once and for all (if we can). When this article was first made it stated that Minaj was born in 1984, and over time this has changed to the general consensus agreeing it was 1982. The good article nomination process highlighted the fact that the source we were using was unreliable - in fact - it was blacked out. At the moment the article may change to show her birthdate being "(December, 8 1982 or 1984)" - as it is evident we haven't really got a consensus either way. I'm opening this discussion so we can (hopefully) come to a conclusion about how old she actually is, and with reliable sources, common sense and luck, we might just get there!
Various news outlets/websites/media etc., have reported her age/birthdate to be either be 1982 or 1984. I've done my best to compile some sources for both, and if editors can find some more that would be great. Everyone and anyone's opinions/thoughts/comments would be welcome! Thanks Jennie | ☎ 13:56, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
Sources that state/infer Minaj is born Dec 8, 1984:
Sources that state/infer Minaj is born Dec 8, 1982:
- While it is true that certain aspects of the police report are blacked-out (the responding officer's home address, Minaj's home address, the Incident #, Samuel Safaree's home address), Minaj's DOB is not. (I am unclear as to why a government document - in this case, a police report that was released to the public - is considered unreliable.)
- In any case, Wikipedia can only gather what is reported in reliable sources. A possible solution would be to change the line to something along the lines of:
- Onika Tanya Maraj (born either December 8, 1982 {sources} or December 8, 1984 {sources}) or
- That way the birthdate controversy is acknowledged and the sources for the different dates are included. If both dates are not somehow included, that section of the article will continue to be a persistent target of continual edit/revert cycles. If both dates are included in the article wherever the birthdate is mentioned (lede, early life, Infobox), then hopefully the birthdate information will stabilize and the number of needless edit/reverts will decline. Shearonink (talk) 14:55, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
- I honestly feel that the situation was handled best the way it was before: the reliable sources supported the 1982 date, with a footnote mentioning why that date was chosen over the other one, and the sources that supported the other one (1984) in the footnote. Listing both dates in the lead seems a bit unprofessional to me. --Thevampireashlee (talk) 15:01, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
- I think I may be leaning towards listing both. We can't provide a reliable source just yet, and the police document was from TMZ.com (which isn't a RS). I agree it may look "unprofessional", but it is done on numerous articles on Wikipedia. What I think will be interesting is this December - as this is either when Minaj is 30 or 28, if she is 30, then the media/fans will report/discuss this as a milestone, it's going to be interesting to see her reaction and if we can finally put it to bed then. What I would say is that the evidence does seem to be leaning towards 1982, although that still isn't definite. Jennie | ☎ 16:14, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
- Minaj's age is definately disputed I am a huge fan, and I would to believe she is younger but shes turning 30 this year, I remeber on her E! Special documentary it showed a clip of her in school in 5th grade and it was filmed in 1993.<--- I never forgot about that. And in her yearbook at LaGuardia she is under class of 2000, which would mean she is either 29 or 30. Even though she had a late birthday and in New York she doesnt meet the deadline she goes to school earlier or later. I think she just wanted to appear younger so she could be in the industry longer.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1flyguyrob (talk • contribs) 16:30, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
- I already pointed out the E documentary information, but that can't be sourced. Neither the LaGuardia yearbook - unless somebody had a copy. We need reliably sourced information. Jennie | ☎ 16:39, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
- I've changed it to display both for now, as to pass for GA we need to provide a reliable source. As the sources conflict, we may as well show both until we can reach a consensus here. Although I was initially convinced it was 1982, Billboard provides her birthdate being 1984 - and I can't think of anything more reliable than Billboard in terms of artists biographies/information/statistics. I'm guessing we will eventually come to a conclusion to provide both or either, so what are we thinking? Jennie | ☎ 19:03, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
- I'm not sure why the billboard reference was removed in favor of a non-notable Celebuzz ref, but I've undone the edit. --Thevampireashlee (talk) 00:02, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
- IMDb is not considered to be a reliable source. In my opinion, the official Dallas police report would be considered to be more reliable for the 1982 birthdate, in the sense that the officers have rules and guidelines as to what they can and cannot accept as proof for dates. The Report is an official government document, but IMDb is a user-submitted venue, so I have substituted the Police Report and adjusted the sentence a bit. My Edits
I really have a problem with people removing my edits, I work hard to type and source such things and I feel disrespected when you guys delete, or remove my contributions. I never remove anyone's edit's and if I do I just make adjustments or minor changes. I have been taught to respect other's and I would never do that to anyone who just want's to contribute to an encylopedia, I think that if someone has a reliable source and makes an edit than it should be included in the article. I have enough respect for everyone to not delete or change their edits without their notice. We are all here to work on her article so why take away from it ? We are never going to get a GA review if we keep on removing people's edits.
I understand if you want to make some alterations or reword the edit's but plese don't remove it entirely. Thank you 1flyguyrob —Preceding undated comment added 16:24, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
- Whenever I remove an edit, I leave clear instructions why in the edit summary. Which can be viewed in the article history. The major issue with some of your contributions has been that the sources are not reliable according to Wikipedia's standards. Also, of the wording has been potentially defamatory or deliberately promotional, which can't have according to Wikipedia's standards on biographies about living people. It's awesome that you want to contribute to this article. I totally respect that you are a Minaj fan, but some of the comments that have been added could actually end up hurting her in the long run, because they potentially cast her in an unfair light. We can only make such claims if they are well-sourced, which they haven't been. I would recommend reading through WP:RS and WP:BLP very clearly before adding info to articles about people who are still alive or recent dead. Know that when your edits are removed it is no personal attack against you. Don't take it so personally. We all want what's best for this article. :) --Thevampireashlee (talk) 16:51, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
- I second what Thevampireashlee has just said. Sometimes edits have to be deleted/removed/changed to comply with Wikipedia's guidelines - guidelines that focus around providing factual, free content. Your enthusiasm on this article is admirable and it's good to see your dedication in improving this particular article (and those related), but we have to include information that people can form their own judgment upon. Adding things that purposefully influence the way readers interpret the subject can be seen as damaging the neutrality that articles should have. The guidelines for biographies of living people are among the strictest on Wikipedia, I would recommend reading them. Do not take the removal of your edits (or for that matter, anybody else who has had edits removed) personally - the quality for inclusion becomes particularly tight during the good article nomination process and editors involved will generally remove huge changes or contentious additions. - Hello? Can anyone get a signature contribs) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1flyguyrob (talk • contribs) 03:09, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
- Please sign all talk pages with four tildes. It's not very difficult. Anyway, I do not have Ms. Minaj's signature, nor do I know anyone who does. At present, it's not crucial to the article or to its encyclopedic nature to include her signature, so I'm not pressured either way. It would be interesting to decorate the article with it, but I see little to significance of including it. --Thevampireashlee (talk) 20:07, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

- Not done See the discussion above, we have conflicting reliable sources for both so we have decided to include both. We expect to get more confirmation in December (hopefully). - First, I would like to say that YouTube is not a high quality reliable source. Since any crackpot can upload a video on the site, it can't be taken as reliable. In addition to this, there are guidelines for what can and cannot be considered "associated acts" on the article about a musical artist. You can find them here. Unless these three artists meet these criteria, we cannot add them to the article as an associated act. Here's the criteria:
- Individual or individuals: groups of which he or she has been a member
- Other acts with which this act has collaborated on multiple occasions, or on an album, or toured with as a single collaboration act playing together
- Groups which have spun off from this group
- A group from which this group has spun off
--Thevampireashlee (talk) 01:15, 2 October 2012 (UTC)
- Under these pretenses, I would justify that adding Britney Spears is acceptable, due to Minaj's presence on the Femme Fatale Tour for her remix collaboration on Till The World Ends. --Thevampireashlee (talk) 01:16, 2 October 2012 (UTC)
- I'm not sure Britney meets that criteria as they didn't tour as a single collaboration act - e.g. Jay-Z and Kanye West's Watch the Throne Tour. —Jennie | ☎ 18:42, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

On Tuesday, October 2, 2012; during an audition taping of American Idol, Nicky Minaj curses and uses several F-Bombs directed at Mariah Carey while Keith Urban sits between them. Longtime American Idol judge Randy Jackson is heard asking Nicky to calm down in the background.
The poorly selling rapper has also been in public feuds with Lil' Kim recently. gearhed (talk) 19:20, 3 October 2012 (UTC) [2]

It says that she apologised on twitter - But the apology was directed to rapper Da Brat as the media reported she had claimed to bottle Minaj. Nicki responded via twitter but then apologised afterwards when Da Brat tweeted she had made no such comment. Mariah and Obama controversy
This needs to be put under the contoversy section. U cant include these two in her Pink FridaY: Roman Reloaded section but then have a controversy section for the Summer Jam feud and the Lil Kim beef. Both topics received alot of media attention, and for the people saying I will be blocked are they adminstrators ?--1flyguyrob (talk) 20:28, 16 October 2012 (UTC)
- One argument with Mariah Carey doesn't really warrant it's own section, futhermore, it would be unrealistic to document every single controversial lyric that Minaj has written or rapped. Both of these can be implemented in the 2011-present: Roman Reloaded... section quite nicely; something that does not fit into a specific time frame, like the Lil' Kim feud, needs its own section as it would not make sense spread across the Biography sections. As for the "Summer Jam incident" that perhaps could be implemented into the 2011-present: Roman Reloaded... section as well, although it may be too in-depth in its present form. Simply, these could do with inclusion, but not whole or separate sections, as they may seem relevant now, but perhaps not considering Minaj's whole career (see, WP:RECENTISM). Thanks. —Jennie | ☎ 20:52, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Infobox image
An edit has ensued about the image for this article's infobox. My thoughts are as such: the image was uploaded to the WikiMedia Commons as being an "original work", licensed under CC-BY-SA 3.0 that allows the image to be freely used. Since the user that uploaded it does not seem to have an account or any proof whatsoever that they are a professional photographer that snapped photos of Nicki, I'm assuming this is a blatant lie. The image is probably owned by Getty Images and was illegally altered and uploaded to the Commons. This happens a lot. So, at present, the only high-quality photograph we have of Minaj is this one: File:Christopher Macsurak Nicki Minaj cropped.jpg. Having a recent image of the recording artist is desirable, but not necessary at all. Recently, the same issue has arisen on another article I watch-over: Kesha. I left this message on the talk page of the person who engaged in the image edit-war, that I hope some people find illuminating in regards to this, nearly identical situation, taken from this:
I understand that you would like to add a more recent picture of Kesha to her article. It makes to do so and would help us be more accurate in our encyclopedia entry on her, but the image you would like to use is copyrighted by Getty Images. Their copyright claim can be circumvented with a fair-use rationale, but I do not believe that we have sufficient grounds for justifying the use of their image. If we could come up with some sort of critical commentary that justified its inclusion, then I would encourage you to keep it there; unfortunately, we can't at this time. At present, we have a dozen or so (yes, they are outdated) images of Kesha that can be freely used without worry of possible legal trouble. Right now, updating the image to be the most recent possible is not the highest priority for that article either. I would recommend that checking Flickr routinely, until a free image of her shows up. I'm willing to bet, however, that a high quality image won't surface into her next tour, though. If you have any questions about fair use or copyright, I would recommend looking here: WP:COPYRIGHT and WP:FAIRUSE.

- Well I think the photo should be used, I took into consideration, the other editor's desires for the picture to be included in the article and I did that by adding it into the article, but more recent pictures of Minaj are most likely more preferred, I mean we have a photo of her on the Femme Fatale Tour in the 2012 section and during that time, that tour was over. I think the newer picture should be used until the uploader is notified of the assumption of the photo not being under a free license so can, we agree on this ? --1flyguyrob (talk) 02:40, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
- I disagree, unfortunately. Would you continue to drive a car that you suspected might be stolen? No. Because you could get in trouble for not reporting it. It's best to leave the image out of the article until we can prove that the license is legitimate. I'm going to flag the image as potential license laundering and see what becomes it. If you would like, head over to WP:FLICKR, open the external link, and type in "Nicki Minaj" to see if anything freely licensed shows up. An alternative might, indeed, exist. :) I do agree, conversely, that once we find a more recent photograph and that photograph shows her full face, head-on (as is preferable over one that's more recent, in my opinion), we should move the current infobox image down to the 2012 section of the article. --Thevampireashlee (talk) 02:51, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

- Unfortunately, that one's not the right license. WP:FLICKR gives a basic run-through of which licenses are acceptable. Also, the image that you linked to is another instance of Flickr washing, meaning someone created a Flickr account just to upload and misrepresent copyrighted images. Back to the drawing board, I'm afraid. --Thevampireashlee (talk) 21:31, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Electropop and synthpop musician
Recently, I have been helping populate the category Category:Synthpop musicians, after someone added it to an article I've been watching (Porcelain Black). Of course, Nicki Minaj was one of the first recording artist to come to mind when I thought "electropop" (and synthpop, which are exactly the same thing). That said, it appears that User:SnapSnap has removed the category to every article (s)he felt it did not apply. Normally, I dislike engaging in edit-wars of any kind, especially in regard to genres, but this is a bit unnecessary -- given that I am being asked to relinquish sources for something that is so obvious it hurts and that 90% of the other genres on every musician pages are completely unsourced. That said, what qualifies one as a synthpop/electropop musician? In my mind, having at least one prominent publication qualifies someone as a musician of that genres, but I've been basing the criteria on albums and singles. Someone like Madonna who has had electropop songs and albums since her first album, and people like Enrique Inglesias who has at least two electropop albums (Euphoria and Insomniac), are clear examples of artists that epitomize a genre, but in the case of Nicki Minaj, who has only had two studio albums published, it is not so clear. She is considered a hip hop artist, with only two albums and a mix. One of those albums is highly views as electropop, yet she is only considered hip hop. That sounds biased, and it sounds like we're giving undue weight. It should be clear that a large, large portion of her output is in the electropop genre, and not just from Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. Most notably, "Super Bass" is an electropop song and is her most successful song to date. That said, every single on her sophomoric album, aside from "Right by My Side" and "Beez in the Trap", is an electropop song. Almost all of them were highly successful on Billboard charts. The only hip hop songs Minaj seems to produce are those where she is a featured artist with other individuals as the primary artist. Otherwise, all of her prominent releases are electropop. Considering that this is not enough to justify considering her an electropop vocalist in the same vein as Lady Gaga and Kesha, there are multiple sources that either directly mention it or allude to it:

Yet somehow she is still not an electropop artist? I want to know why? Is it simply that other editors don't like their favorite artists being called "electropop" or "synthpop" artists, because those artists tend to be viewed as untalented? What is it? And the most important question I have: should be list her as an electropop artist in the article? I say yes. Resoundingly yes. --Thevampireashlee (talk) 00:43, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
- I think this comes from the idea that Genres on Wikipedia should remain general. A few songs on PF:RR such as "Whip It", "Pound the Alarm" and "Starships" are electropop, but the majority make up hip-hop, R&B and some ballad/pop. I think the input from some other editors would be useful in this decision and I would perhaps suggest you arise this again after the Re-Up has been released (when there is more idea of direction), but I think that the majority of editors would say that Genres should be kept general, and at the moment, both pop and electronic are listed. —Jennie | ☎ 11:05, 4 November 2012 (UTC)
- I fully agree now that general, in regards to genre, is preferable, instead of listing pages and pages of sub-genres. However, the original issue was that the Category:Synthpop musicians category was being removed because the article text did not specifically mention that she performed a significant number of synthpop (synonymous with electropop) songs. Since I believe the genre comprises the majority of her discography (at the very least a significant part), I advocate the inclusion of the category; however, if we remove mention of the her songs being in that genre, then other parties will have grounds for removing it. I believe the topic is significant enough (with a plethora of reliable journalism verifying) to be in the article. See the cycle yet? If we don't mention it, then the category will be removed, but it's significant enough to include. As it currently stands, the article has both the mentions of her work largely being in the electropop genre with matching categories. --Thevampireashlee (talk) 03:25, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

Rapping technique
As I stated in the edit summary, I have changed the section titled "Rapping technique" under "Artistry" to "Musical style". Originally, the section was simply "Rapping technique" and has been so for quite some time. I altered the title to "Rapping technique and musical style" after expanding the section to include her foray into electronic (most notable electropop) genres. The inclusion was reverted back to the original state of simply "Rapping technique". I have since changed the title again to simply "Musical style" as I believe it is more appropriate. Reasoning: while I believe "Rapping technique" is succinct and eloquent, even brilliant, it is no longer wholly accurate for what the section contains. In order to optimize the coherency of the section, I recommend a slightly broader header title; simply, the section is no longer exclusively about rapping. Additionally, the phrasing "Musical style", when it comes to biographies of musicians seems to be the unspoken house trend around Wikipedia. For example, I have participated in writing a few good articles on musicians; two of them contain this title header, Porcelain Black and Kesha -- similar artists, both having adventures into electronic music and rapping coincidentally. That aside, other good articles including Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, and Madonna. Former good articles Katy Perry and Christina Aguilera contain it or manifestations of it. Featured article Janet Jackson and B-Class article Lana Del Rey incorporate it. Get my point? :) Arguments and accolades welcome. --Thevampireashlee (talk) 22:00, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
- Agree, although predominately a rapper, her movement into more genres of music and singing means that "Musical style" is more fitting. —Jennie | ☎ 22:19, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
- Expanding on what you said, Jennie, leaving it broad also opens up the opportunity for us to add more information (and more types of information) as time passes. --Thevampireashlee (talk) 22:39, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

- I definitely support this idea, should we find any reliable source that discuss the topic. Lady Gaga's article and Janet Jackson's article do this fairly well, I think. We could use them as examples (the articles, not the artists per se). --Thevampireashlee (talk) 22:39, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
- Looks like an attempt to forge a section about her music video artistry was made. Unfortunately, I reverted the additions for two reasons. First, 90% of the section was completely unsourced, making the claims possible original research (a gross violation of our policy on biographies). Second, the wording was very peacock-y, meaning the tone of the verbiage was not indifferent, unbiased, or objective, but instead served to promote the subject of the article, something that also highly contradicts what is permissible for a biography article. I understand that we all want the article to be as well-written as possible, while covering a vast array of topics, but there are stylistic guidelines we must adhere to. We cannot aim to make Minaj look good or convince other people that she is a desirable artist to listen to, but we can provide information about her and allow others to come to whatever conclusion they will. This is perhaps very difficult for one who is a fan of her work. --Thevampireashlee (talk) 03:31, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
- I would like to add another comment on the matter of Minaj's music videos. Normally, I would myself embark on writing adding content to the article in regards to this, but I'm not quite sure where to begin. It does not appear that a wide selection of journalism exists on the subject of Minja's cinematography. I speculate that, because Minaj is still developing her artistic identity, she has not yet developed a concrete trademark that we could easily discern and write about. As evidenced by her first two albums, she seems to be experimenting with various genres, sounds, and vocal techniques, so it is no wonder that her ancillary music videos reflect that exploration. I'm curious to see if anyone has noticed any patterns or trends in the subject of her music videos. Someone like Lady Gaga or Lana Del Rey have very distinct cinematic styles for their videos. Both are quite gaudy and over the top, which may explain why more journalism exists about their videos than Minaj's; I don't mean to insult Minaj or devalue her as an artist, but I'm not sure she has a particular video style; her work, to be quite frank, is forgettable and I can't seem to find an underlying theme. --Thevampireashlee (talk) 03:44, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

Anyways, back to the topic. There isn't much information on Minaj's videos, not as a whole, unless I find reviews from reliable sources who leave feedback from a single video. Remove Philatrophy section - At 0.1% of yearly income, is the donation to the foodbank noteworthy as philanthropic work? Philanthropy appears to commonly mean significant longstanding commitments of time and/or money to charitable causes. Is this a single example of a more far reaching philanthropic involvement? In that case the section should be duly expanded. If it is not I would advocate for the removal of the section and in addition am curious if it has for the most part been included due to its link to current events (Sandy). 108.235.25.221 (talk) 23:31, 4 December 2012 (UTC)

Birthday
As expected, more information as to Nicki's correct birthday was made available on her birthday today. I have seen several websites call it her 30th (linked below) with none calling it her 29th:

Seeing as though this article is a good article, I wanted to propose the change of confirming her birthday as December 8, 1982 and removing 1984 before making the change myself. Thanks, 68DANNY2 (talk) 17:38, 8 December 2012 (UTC)

- The person above is Bwilkins, I suggest you take this matter up with him. I have adjusted the signature to show who the poster was. Also, yes, this matter has been discussed repeatedly on this talkpage... There is a Dallas Police Report, that was reported extensively on in many reliable sources, that indicated Minaj's birthyear was 1982, while most other sources, including Minaj herself over and over again, claimed and indicated her birthyear was 1984, so both dates were included in the past. If a published birthday card and its accompanying article is counted as sufficient to prove once and for all that Miss Minaj's birthyear is 1982, to back up the police report, I'm fine with that. Her early life
"at an unknown business"? Too specific. Could we perhaps change this to read just "a business"? ToriJana (talk) 17:37, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- Tough call. "Unknown" in that sentence can mean we don't know the name, or that we don't know the type of business. The assumption on Wall street would be financial, but we don't know that. If you remove the "unknown", then people will indeed assume it was a financial business. (✉→BWilkins←✎) 17:47, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
Nicki Minaj age
I found a few clips, both more significant than the ones referenced on the page, one with Nicki stating her age with clear evidence that the clip from was '09 and another of her E! special documentary, both of which confirming her age to be 28. The page should be updated to include this information as it is quite a large error to have a date of birth wrong, expecially when not only an official documentary but the artist herself has stated that she is 28 [3][4] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Spencersmat (talk • contribs)
- Could you please read all of the discussions on this page before making that edit, or even suggesting the change. We have a SOURCED police report - which you would agree holds more weight than an E! documentary. I would have thought the words "both dates are intentional" might have helped. (✉→BWilkins←✎) 11:20, 23 December 2012 (UTC)
I don't know why people didn't just add "or" between the dates to make this clearer. I've now inserted the word "or" and added a {{cn}}
on the 1984 date. I also added a comment in the wikitext, because "both dates are intentional" doesn't explain anything by itself, and it should probably be removed from visible text: You can't tell from that visible comment who intended it or why. Someone reading the article can't tell if it's because of conflicting reliable sources (which aren't discussed in the article), or if it is because someone insists they've been born twice, or God knows what Hollywood craziness. --Closeapple (talk) 21:11, 25 December 2012 (UTC)
- In case you had not noticed, the second date has been removed dozens of times. I recently added the bit about "intentional" because people were ignoring the inline wikitext. (✉→BWilkins←✎) 21:45, 25 December 2012 (UTC)
- Is this enough rationale for it to change to 1982 permanently? If not, we should restore the "or December 8 1984" as we still have sources for both. —Jennie | ☎ 22:04, 25 December 2012 (UTC)
- I've removed the 1982 year (and kept the date) in the lead. Unlike 1984, 1982 was the only one mentioned, which is misleading to the reader. -- MST☆R (Merry Christmas!) 07:39, 26 December 2012 (UTC)

WP:N Nicki Minaj Show
Is this section even notable?
In 2012, amateur cartoonist David Monger authored a popular web series based on Nicki Minaj called The Nekci Menij Show. Featuring pop icons from Madonna to Marina and the Diamonds, the characters are illustrated in an intentionally crude manner accompanied by SMS language so as to mirror the internet meme Dolan Duck.[123][124] Since September 2012, the show had garnered more than 600,000 views on YouTube.[123] Primarily crafted using Microsoft Paint, the show is intended as a satire of celebrity syndrome and stan culture.[123][124]
It's not specific to Minaj except for a parody of her name and it smells of this crude YouTube Paint user trying to ride Minaj's coattails into notoriety on her article. Someone want to check into the edit history as to who inserted these sources? If it is so notable then why isn't in his article? 97.85.168.22 (talk) 16:32, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
Foxy Brown is not dead
Does Nicki belief that Foxy is dead or is the text wrong? Maybe she is referring to Lisa Lopez that died in a car accident? I never really told Foxy how much she has influenced me and how much she changed my life, and you've gotta tell people that when they're alive to even be able to take the compliment, instead of paying tribute to them when they're no longer here."[151] She has said that Foxy Brown was "the most influential female rapper" and that her album Broken Silence changed her life.[152] 97.85.168.22 (talk) 16:50, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Where was she born? I'd assume that she was born in Trinidad as the article stipulates she was born to Trinidadians (presumably, 'people from Trinidad'). I think it would make more sense if that line was edited to read "Trinidad-born", as in 'born in Trinidad' rather than 'Trinidadian-born', from which one can only logically infer 'born of Trinidadian(s)'.
- Although "Trinidadian-born" suggests that she was born a Trinidad citizen. I know many people who were born in a country, but did not obtain citizenship via birthplace (✉→BWilkins←✎) 15:51, 30 April 2013 (UTC)
There's no such thing as a Trinidadian citizen (in this/that sense anyway), so that's not the issue; the issue in general is how to refer to her by country right at the start of the article (personally I think "Trinidadian-born American" works fine, but that's just me). She was born in Trinidad and Tobago, then moved to the United States of American. In this case it's important to note that she was born on Trinidad, not Tobago (or another island in the country), and obviously also that the demonym for people from the United States is "American". - the 2. of June 2013 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A00:C440:20:1116:45EE:2C08:90BD:B903 (talk) 04:26, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
The Counselor???
Since The Counselor was just a rumor, it shouldn't be included in the text. People don't need to know about that. The film has nothing to do with Nicki. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.38.211.86 (talk) 09:04, 8 May 2013 (UTC)
Nicholas Telemaque
Should this event related to Nicki Minaj not be detailed in the article? Also her supposed Illuminati connections perhaps under conspiracy theory or conspiracy theories will help for the sake of education. Please any feedback? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 116.251.192.77 (talk) 22:13, 8 May 2013 (UTC)
