Kamianets-Podilsky Ivan Ohienko National University (Template:Lang-uk) is a university[1] in Kamyanets-Podilsky (Ukraine).
History
The university was founded on October 22, 1918, when the Hetman of Ukraine Pavlo Skoropadsky signed the Law on the establishment of Kamianets-Podilsky State Ukrainian University. The first rector of the university was the famous scientist and linguist, Professor Ivan Ohienko. The university consisted of five faculties: the Faculty of History and Philology, the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Agriculture.
The defeat of the Ukrainian national liberation movement in the autumn of 1920 by the bolsheviks determined the fate of the university: at first, it was reorganized into the Academy of Theoretical Knowledge, but on February 2, 1921 — into the Institute for Theoretical Sciences, which included three autonomous institutions: Physics and Mathematics, the Humanities and Agricultural Sciences. On February 26, 1921 the Institute for Theoretical Sciences was reorganized into two separate schools — the Institute of Public Education and Agricultural Institute. During the 1930s and 1940s the Institute of Public Education was reorganized three times — in 1930, when it was reorganized into the Institute of Social Education; in 1933–1934, into Pedagogical Institute; and in 1939, into the Institute of Teachers. Since the 1948–1949 academic year, according to the decision of the Council of Ministers of the USSR, the Kamianets-Podilsky Institute of Teachers was reorganized into the Pedagogical Institute. According to the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine “About the creation of Kamianets-Podilsky State Pedagogical University" from June 28, 1997 № 628 Kamianets-Podilsky State Pedagogical University was founded on the basis of the Pedagogical Institute.
Taking into consideration the importance of national educational tradition in the development of state, under the authority of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine “About creation of Kamianets-Podilsky State University” from March 17, 2003 № 148-r Kamianets-Podilsky State University was created on the basis of Kamianets-Podilsky State Pedagogical University.
In accordance with the decree of the President of Ukraine “About conferring the status of National University to Kamianets-Podilsky State University” from January 22, 2008 №44/2008, due to the nationwide and international recognition of university's activities and its great contributions to the development of national education and science, Kamianets-Podilsky State University was conferred the status of a national university.
Under the authority of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine “About naming of Kamianets-Podilsky National University after Ivan Ohienko” from August 20, 2008 № 1119-r Kamianets-Podilsky National University was named after Ivan Ohienko.
