A new building of Queen Elizabeth Hospital as seen from highway.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah was a large, 10 storey, reinforced concrete framed structure. It was the main general hospital for the whole of Sabah and specifically the Kota Kinabalu city.[citation needed]

The building is in the brutalist style which allows the raw materials to show, and is cheaper to build than other methods.[1] The building was finished in 1981 and the builder used unwashed sea sand, containing shells and corals in the concrete mix to save money[2]. This produced weak concrete, and many newspapers reported the concrete falling from the ceiling and the walls. (citation needed)

There was a report into the building which put the blame firmly on the builder, who had since died. Many drawings and details had been lost due to fire at the Architects office.

The building has since been demolished. During demolition, many locals expressed safety concerns for 2 excavators on top of the structure demolishing it[3]. 2 new towers are being built in its place.
