LabWare is a company that develops and implements software that automates laboratory operations, known in the industry as Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and Electronic Laboratory Notebooks (ELN). The company's international headquarters are in Wilmington, DE.
Company
Founded in 1987, LabWare has offices in North and Latin America, Europe, Asia, India, Africa and Australia, in 15 countries with customers in 90.[1][2][3] The company is headquartered in Wilmington, DE, with a training facility at Oberod Estate, a French-style Chateau in Centreville, DE built for Jane du Pont Lunger.[4][5] Purchased and renovated by LabWare CEO Vance Karshner, Oberod occasionally loans its facilities to host events.[6][7] In 2008, LabWare became the world’s leading laboratory software company after surpassing Thermo Fisher Scientific.[8] The majority of its customers are Fortune 500 companies, with its largest clients in the pharmaceutical industry.[9][10] LabWare pharmaceutical clients include Wyeth, Schering Plough, Teva, AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Merck, Sanofi Pasteur, Novartis, Zentiva, Hoffman La Roche, Bristol Myers Squibb, Boehringer Ingelheim, Takeda, Genentech and Mylan Laboratories.[11]
They produce software for other industries as well, such as food and beverage, forensics, nuclear power, environmental and water testing.[3] Their food and beverage clients include British Sugar, Foster’s Brewery and Bakkavor.[12] Their software is also used worldwide to test for water, soil, food and air quality in the US, Ireland, Australia and South Africa.[13][14] The company's products satisfy the US Food and Drug Administrations electronic record-keeping regulations (21 CFR Part 11), which ensures that computer systems have a collection of controls to protect data within a system and ensure that all records are authentic, incorruptible and confidential when necessary.[15][16] They also have a "Powered by SAP NetWeaver" certification status, recognizing integration testing with SAP's ESOA Bundle 1.0 - Integration of Quality Management Systems, part of the SAP ECC 6.0 product suite.[17]
CEO
LabWare was founded in 1987 by Vance Kershner, who serves as the company's president and CEO.Cori Anne Natoli (January 13, 2013). "Centreville's LabWare now global leader in software for laboratory work". Delaware Online. Retrieved 25 September 2013. After graduating from the University of Delaware in 1978 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the, Kershner worked in the engineering department at DuPont for 13 years, he left to form his own company, taking on DuPont as LabWare's first client.[18] In addition to LabWare, Kershner owns and operates a 15,000-acre game farm in South Africa, and is a partner on Scrub Island, an $80 million resort project in the British Virgin Islands.[19][20] He is a trustee of the Delaware Art Museum.[21] He is also a partner in the restaurant Buckley’s Tavern in Centreville, DE.[22]
LIMS
LabWare creates Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).[23] A LIMS is a software solution to streamline workflow and automate laboratory processes.[24] Originally created to automate clerical activities involved in processing analytical results in a lab environment to improving accuracy and turnaround times, the systems have evolved to fully automate lab process and aid in the elimination of human error.[25] A LIMS can also be used to ensure that internal standards and government regulations are being followed in a lab.[26] LIMS are used in a wide range of lab settings, including forensics, pharmaceutical, food and beverage testing and chemical manufacturing laboratories.[27]
ELN
LabWare also develops Electronic Laboratory Notebooks (ELN).[28] An ELN is a software solution intended to eliminate paper lab notebooks in favor of creating a digital version.[29] In addition to simply making a digital process out of a previously analog procedure, they add elements of functionality including searchability, simpler duplication function, and easier collaboration among multiple users.[30] An ELN also makes it easier for researchers to expand upon findings with the ability to add images and multimedia observations directly to the notebook.[31]
Awards
LabWare won the Scientific Computing and Instrumentation’s Readers’ Choice Award in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) category for nine consecutive years from 2000-2008.[32][33] LabWare LIMS won a Frost & Sullivan Product Quality Leadership Award in 2004, and the company won Frost and Sullivan's European Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) Company of the Year Award in 2008.[34][35]
