The first season of America's Best Dance Crew premiered on February 7, 2008.[1] The season was hosted by Mario Lopez, featured Layla Kayleigh as the backstage correspondent, and was judged by rapper Lil Mama, former *NSYNC singer JC Chasez, and hip-hop choreographer Shane Sparks.[2][3] On March 27, 2008, JabbaWockeeZ was declared the winner of Season 1 and received the $100,000 (USD) prize.[4]

Auditions

America's Best Dance Crew features dance crews from all over the United States. For the first season, the dance crews auditioned in four cities: New York City, Atlanta, Chicago, and Los Angeles. A total of twelve dance crews were chosen from the four cities and were then broken up into four regions: East Coast, Midwest, South, and West Coast.

  • Starting from the Final 6, when a crew gets eliminated, they take a look back at the eliminated crew's journey on the show while playing "Sun Storm" by Mac Lethal.

Week 1: Crew's Choice Challenge

  • Aired on February 7, 2008

Each crew danced to a District 78 mix of their favorite dance track. The crews were broken up into groups of three. The judges selected one crew from each group (italicized) to be safe from elimination and move on to the next week. Afterwards, the judges picked the bottom two crews and they dance battled to guest performer Flo Rida's song "Low".

Week 2: Video Star Challenge

  • Aired on February 14, 2008

Each crew was given a different video with a dance sequence in it, which they had to perform while keeping their own style as a crew.[5]

Week 3: Dance Craze Challenge

  • Aired on February 21, 2008

Each crew performed to a popular dance, also known as a "dance craze", while still showing their own style. However, since some of the dances are very simple, there were certain challenges each team had to do while performing.[6]

Week 4: Movie Character Challenge

Each crew performed a storyline as a character in a movie, while performing on the set of a street.[7]

Week 5: Thriller Challenge

Each crew performed to a track from Michael Jackson's Thriller in honor of the album's 25th anniversary. Each crew also had to incorporated some of his moves in their routine.[8]

Week 6: Broadway Remixed Challenge

  • Aired on March 13, 2008

At the beginning of the show, the crews teamed up to perform a routine from a hip-hop remix of Annie's "It's the Hard Knock Life." Then, each crew had to perform a Broadway scenario and turn it into a hip-hop routine.[9]

Week 7: Evolution of Street Dance Challenge

Each crew performed to a master mix of the same songs using moves which is some of the most famous moves from the 30 years history of hip hop.[10]

The crews created original beats to groove to during their routine for the encore "Do or Die" round to show America why they should be crowned the winner. The remaining two crews then performed their prepared routines before the lines opened for the final voting session of the season. Kaba Modern's performance was called "America's Best Dance Crew, The Video Game" but was not shown on TV.

Week 8: The Live Finale

  • Aired on March 27, 2008

The eliminated crews of season 1 returned and teamed up with the remaining two crews for a regional collaboration. Instead of going head-to-head, JabbaWockeeZ and Status Quo teamed up for their last performance.

On March 27, 2008, JabbaWockeeZ was crowned the winner of America's Best Dance Crew Season 1, while Status Quo was declared the runner-up.[4][11][12]
