Thekla Simona Gelsomina Reuten (born 16 September 1975) is a Dutch actress.
Reuten was born in Bussum, Netherlands, the daughter of an Italian mother and a Dutch father. She studied acting at the Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Amsterdam. During the last year of her studies, she assumed leading roles in Dutch film and theater productions, and was discovered soon after graduation by European film. She has appeared in Belgium, Germany, Italy and Holland in award-winning works such as De Trip van Teetje (Tate's Voyage), Kruimeltje (Little Crumb), Rosenstraße, Una Bellezza Che Non Lascia Scampo (‘An Inescapable Beauty’), and Iedereen beroemd! (Everybody’s Famous!), which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Right at the beginning of her career, she was recognized as new outstanding talent in Europe with the ‘Shooting Star Award’ of the Berlinale (Berlin Film Festival) for her remarkable portrayal of Lotte in the film Twin Sisters, which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Important roles followed in film hits such as In Bruges with Colin Farrell, Hotel Lux with Bully Herbig, and The American alongside George Clooney, as well as in the multi-award winning political thriller Waffenstillstand (‘Ceasefire’).
Thekla Reuten speaks five languages (German, English, French, Dutch and Italian) and is one of Europe's acclaimed actresses. Alongside her film career, she also appears in ambitious television series such as Hidden (BBC, Great Britain), Restless (BBC, Great Britain), and Sleeper Cell (Showtime, USA). She alternates between genres in film and television formats and also returns often to the theater. Thus, she has performed in Johan Simons’ production Fall of the Gods at the Salzburg Festival and the Ruhr Triennial, as well as in Rufus Norris’ Blood Wedding at the Almeida Theater in London - alongside Gael Garcia Bernal.
