Instant Love is an album by Cheryl Lynn, released in 1982 on Columbia Records. Luther Vandross produced the album and also performed a duet with Lynn on "If This World Were Mine", a cover of the original recording by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. The arrangements were by Luther Vandross, Marcus Miller and Nat Adderley, Jr. X Cheryl and Luther proved to be an instantly engaging match. As thrilling as Luther's first album with Aretha, "Jump to It, the title cut and first single is catchy and memorable. It is puzzling why it didn't perform better on the charts. It is possibly Cheryl's most cohesive work. The strange, but, fascinating "Sleep Walkin'" keeps your interest until Cheryl nails the plaintive and beautiful, "Day After Day". Side One ends with gusto, "Look Before You Leap" making for jagged pacing, yet it somehow all works.

Side Two is bolstered by both artists totally up to the task of tackling the Marvin Gaye penned remake of another of his duets with Tammi Terrell, the beautiful, "If This World Were Mine" which became the biggest hit (#4 R&B) off of this sadly under appreciated triumph. Despite soon working with songwriters/producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis on her #1 R&B hit, "Encore". ""Instant Love"" is a much tighter album. Fortunately, it was Cheryl's second Top 10 R&B hit, at a time when R&B airplay alone could still result in a hit album. But this album deserved to crossover.

In an era where artists and labels feel compelled to fill the CD format with over 72 minute of music, often 30%-50% amounts to filler. Like some of the classic albums of the 70s like Marvin Gaye's masterpiece "What's Going On", "Diana Ross' career-defining, "The Boss", as well as, this short and sweet, piece of work all clock in less than 40 minutes. It confirms that sometimes less is more. "Instant Love" may well be Cheryl's tour de force.
