Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is an upcoming third-person action video game set in The Lord of the Rings universe, currently being developed by Monolith Productions and due to be released by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.[1][2] The game will bridge the gap between the events of the Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit and is due for release on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.[1][2] As of 13 November 2013, there is no confirmed release date for the title.[1][2][3]
Gameplay
In Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, the player plays as a ranger known as Talion.[1]
The game makes use of a new system called the Nemesis System which remembers the player's interactions with specific types of characters they will encounter in the game and adjusts the manner in which these characters will react to the player throughout the game.[1]
Plot
The events of the game take place between the universes of The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings, as written by J.R.R. Tolkien.[1] The family of ranger Talion is killed by Sauron's armies, and he himself is also killed, but soon revived with "wraith-like abilities" and heads to Mordor to exact his revenge.[2] The story involves the Rings of Power, but the story is separate to The Lord of the Rings canon. However, Warner Bros. maintains that the stories will align.[2]
Development
In August 2013, an artist leaked that Monolith Productions was working on a new triple-A title, separate from Guardians of Middle-earth.[4] On 12 November 2013, it was announced that this game was Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor.[5] The Monolith team is working with Middle-earth Enterprises, Peter Jackson and the artists at the Weta Workshop to make sure that the settings, characters and story align with the canon of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.[1] The game is being written by Christian Cantamessa, who was a lead-writer and lead-designer on Rockstar San Diego's Red Dead Redemption.
Marketing and Release
The game is alleged by Game Informer to capitalize on the release of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit Trilogy as video gamers will have the movie to be excited about while movie-goers will have the next installment of The Hobbit movie to be excited about.[5]
