Joon Young has lived in ten different countries because his father was an international business man.[1] He had a lonely childhood but learned how to speak five different languages such as English, Chinese, Tagalog (Filipino), Korean,[2] and some Japanese.[3]
When he taught songs to the children in Philippines at the age of seventeen, he started his dream to be a rock star. He went to South Korea without his family's knowledge at the age of 19 and assembled his own band "Flowermist"[4] (later "Switch-on"[5]) and performed in amateur club theatres as well as busked on the streets in Japan. To achieve his goal of becoming a rock star he worked as a model [6] [7] and appeared on television.
Jung Joon-Young finished in third place on Superstar K4[8] and since then he has been doing concerts, TV and radio programs(as a guest or a host) and modeling for cars, clothes, games and N-screen. From May 6, 2013, he worked as a DJ for MBC FM4U "Close Friend" until September 1, 2013. He has appeared on several TV shows including KBS2's "Immortal Song-Singing the Legend 불후의 명곡", "Happy Together 해피투게더" and MBC's "We Got Married 우리결혼했어요" and has been emerging as a versatile entertainer recently.
After signing with CJ E&M, Jung Joon-young released his first debut single "Spotless Mind (병이에요)" with two versions of Music Video(N version and S version) on Oct 01, 2013 and immediately made an impact on the country’s charts. Just an hour after release, “Spotless Mind” nabbed the top spot on Mnet, Bugs and Soribada etc.[9] On October 10, 2013, Jung Joon-Young officially made his debut by releasing his first mini album that contains 6 songs including the title track, "The Sense of an Ending이별 10분 전", and two songs that he participated in writing and composing: "The Number I Know아는 번호" and "Take off Mask" and as soon as it was released, his 1st mini album ranked the top spot both on the daily and weekly chart of Synnara Record as a best selling album. The album sold over 10,000 copies during its first three weeks. In addition, "Spotless Mind병이에요" landed at the third place and "The Sense of an Ending이별 10분전" also took the second place on the chart of one of Korean public TV networks, MBC's music show "Music Core음악중심".
Biography
1989–2005: Early life
Jung Joon-young was born on February 21, 1989 in Jakarta-Indonesia. His father is an international business man who travels many countries for his business. His family moved to China after living in Indonesia for five years and they lived there for five years. While his father was staying in China, his mother and brother moved to Europe. They lived in England and France until Jung turned 17. He couldn't enroll in a regular school because frequently moved around. He took private lessons for regular subjects such as math, English, violin, and piano and he got his fourth degree black belt in Taekwondo.
2005–2007: Adolescence age
When Joon Young became 17, he decided to go to the Phillippines to do missionary work. He taught Taekwondo and music to the local children. He was a member of the choir which performed in front of the president of the Philippines, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. While teaching music with his guitar, he realized that his dream was to be a rock singer.
2007–2012: Career beginning
In 2007, Joon Young left the Philippines and went to South Korea to be a rock star. He signed with "Danal Entertainment". He left this company years later and went to "Startory Entertainment" to be the main vocalist of LEDApple.[10] [11] [12][13] This group was marketed to be an " Idol rock band " and debuted on September 27, 2010. Joon Young was interviewed on a Japanese broadcast while he was a member of LEDApple "I did classical music when I was an elementary student, I played the xylophone, cello, piano, and violin and I started a band when I was a middle school student. Right now I'm working so hard to make a successful band and I want to perform not just in South Korea but also in Japan". Unfortunately Joon Young couldn't debut with the group because of the terms of his contract with his formal company "Danal Entertainment". This company released Joon Young's single album while he was auditioning for Superstar K4 in 2012 without his permission. This included "Love N Hate" and "1,000miles" which was released on Oct 11, 2012 and "Fantasy" and `Happy Blue Christmas` which was released on Nov 11, 2012 even though this album had been recorded a long time ago.
At 22, Joon Young made his own band "Mist" with Gi-Jun(Bassist), Sung-Min(Guitarist), and Joon-Wu(drummer). They performed in Club FF and Cafe Ben James in HongDae. In 2010, Park Ji-Ho joined the band as a sub-vocalist and Joon-Wu left the band and the name of "Mist" was changed to "Flowermist"[4] with a new guitarist Hyung-Wu and drummer Jae-Chun. In August 2011, Japan BS11 Broadcasting invited "Flowermist" to Shibuya, Japan. They performed in clubs and on the street with cover songs "For You"(Yim Jae-bum), " Run to the Sky" (Lee Juk), "Harder to Breathe"(Maroon 5), "Black or White" (Michael Jackson)", "What to Say"(Breeze[disambiguation needed]) and their own songs "If", "Raindrop", "Flight by Night" and "Snow Forest". Also they were invited to the Flying Walrus(Japanese rock singer) as a special guest in October 2011.
Joon Young and Hyung-Wu left the band and went back to South Korea in December 2011 to make a new band "Bad Prince" with a new drummer Sung-Hyun and bassist Laura. He changed the band's name to "Switch-on"[5] and performed in the club "FreeBird" in HongDae. Joon Young made the lyrics for "Perfume" which was composed by Gi-Jun. They wanted to be more popular as a rock band, so they decided to participate in Superstar K4. After the first audition, Laura left the band and they couldn't continue the audition as a band any more. Joon Young decided to continue Superstar K4 as a solo artist.
During this time, Joon Young worked as a model to help pay the rent because his income through club performance was not enough for them to live on and also to keep his passion for a rock music. Joon Young worked as a model at the several different online shopping malls such as "Aboki"(clothes) which his friend Park Tae-joon is a CEO in, "Mens-on"(clothes), "Elvandress"(clothes), "Secomdalcom"(clothes), "Pinkage"(wig and contact lens), and "FashionN"-Royal Top CEO season 2 (home shopping with Oh Cho-Hee). Also he was on an advertisement for "BGFretail"(franchise retail) and participated in other artist's music-videos such as "Twinkle"(트윙클 by TTS -Girls' Generation and "Liquor Bottle"(술병 by Haha).[14] [15] As a struggling artist, Joon Young appeared on a TV show "Ulzzang Generation 얼짱시대 Season 5" (Ep.1~Ep.8)[16][17] and referring to this show, he said "People don't like this program because they think this is just about good looking boys and girls chatting on a TV show, but it was a good opportunity for me to make money."

Jung Joon-young auditioned for Superstar K4 in DaeJeon with the "Switch-on" members. After the first local audition, bassist Laura left the band and Jung continued the second round of the audition by himself with a song "What to Say"(Breeze) on August 17, 2012 in Seoul. Baek Ji-young wasn`t satisfied with his unstable tone, but Lee Seung-chul and Lee Ha-neul liked his unique voice.
When Jung Joon-young sang "BakHa Candy" during the Superweek audition on Sep. 29, PSY, one of the main judges, was so impressed by his appearance, attractive character and unique voice. During the collaboration mission, Joon Young was the team leader. Even though he did a decent performance, Oh Soo-Jung who was one of his team members forgot the lyrics so he had to take responsibility for her. After retrying with the contestants who failed, he got another chance. Joon Young was saved again by PSY after the rival match with Roy Kim and the song "Becoming Dust"(먼지가되어, Kim Kyang-Suk, which Joon Young changed from a ballad to a rock version) and became the best duet audition song ever.[18][19]
In the first week of the live show, Joon Young sang "Waiting Every Day" (매일매일 기다려, TeeSams). PSY said " I liked your performance and showmanship so try to find your best vocal style soon." Yoon Mi-rae said "You have a good star quality and I liked your energy. That performance was really wonderful". Joon Young ended up with second place.
After the first live audition, judge PSY left the program for his world tour of "Gangnam Style" and Yoon Gun replaced him. For the Top 9 live audition, Joon Young sang "Bed of Roses"(Bon Jovi). Yoon Mi-Rae said "You showed your sincerity and emotion. Yoon Gun said "That song choice was perfect for your voice."
On the third week, Joon Young was under the pressure. His song was "That Is All My Life"(그것만이 내 세상, DulGookWha 들국화) but his tone was out of pitch and the judges gave him cruel comments. Just before the live show, on the screen Joon Young described his lonely childhood and missionary work in the Philippines with the poor children. Even though he made a mistake, he ended up in second place. He recalled this time "I thought I was going to be out at that time. When they called my name to go through, I felt sorry for the people who had to leave the competition instead of me".
Finishing the third live audition with a wrong song choice, many people recommended him to change his vocal style from rock to Ballad. For the fourth live on November 2, the mission was "My Style". Joon Young said "If the mission is my style, I have to do rock". He chose the song "Outsider"(Bom-Yurum-Gaul-Kyoul 봄여름가을겨울)[20] and the lyrics were about "I don't care how I look to somebody else". Yoon Gun said "I saw your honesty and it was a great performance. You have the star package and as a singer today this stage can be your starting point". Lee Seung-chull said "You have an amazing aura. The song choice was appropriate and the performance just fit your own characteristics. I could see that you were trying your best today and I was touched by your song and it just sounded like your own story. That was a really charismatic performance. This time he was applauded by all of the judges and audience and he finished in second place again.
The fifth mission on November 9 was a TV viewers' choice. Superstar K4 announced a week before so people could vote for the song, their favorite contestant would perform. Joon Young's fans gave him a Rock-Ballad song "Emergency Room" (응급실, IZI 이지).[21] [22] Lee Seung-chul said "You have many fans already and you'll have success when you debut after this audition." Yoon Gun said " There is a 90's rock spirit inside you. I think your fans know you more than you know yourself. That was a really good song choice. I think this kind of soft rock is your style." He ended up in second place again and he also performed one more duet song "Creep" with Roy Kim.
The sixth live show was "Judge's Mission", so each judge chose one contestant to teach them the judge's own song. Joon Young was chosen by Lee Seung-chul and he was trained with "Did you Forget(잊었니)". Yoon Mi-rae said "Today's performance was the most comfortable ever and you'll be a big star in the future." and Yoon Gun praised Jung's fast development through the audition. Joon Young was eliminated in the semi-final.
In the interview after the audition, Joon oung said "Superstar K4 was a big turning point in my music career. Before the audition only certain people who liked the rock style listened to my music but now more diverse people listen and enjoy my music. I was so proud of myself during the last round because I prepared a lot and I think I did well. I applauded myself whatever the result was. I'm really happy now because I showed myself and my music to the people"[23]
On May 21, 2013, Jung Joon-young contracted with CJ E&M as his official production company and announced his début will be around the summer. He also said "More than anything else, I am thinking a lot about my music. I thank everyone who helped me to make good music, and I ask for your love and support." [24][25][26]

Jung Joon-young was inspired by Freddie Mercury of the British rock band Queen, Kurt Cobain of the American rock band Nirvana, Hyde (vocalist, rhythm guitarist, lyricist and songwriter) and K.A.Z (lead guitarist, backing vocalist and songwriter) of the Japanese rock duo band Vamps, and by the "grunge" genre such as Nirvana.

After the audition, the "Superstar K4 Top12 concert"[27][28][29] was held from December 20 to December 31, 2012. "Supervoice Show"[30] was another concert with other audition contestants. KoreaGM gave him an open concert in Coex Millennium Center on March 1, 2013. He sang "Polly"(Nirvana), "Too Much Love Will Kill You"(Queens), "BakHa Candy"(YB Band) and "What to Say"(Breeze). On March 23, 2013, Jung was invited to be a special guest at the "DongKyoDong ArtPeople" concert in "UNIQLO-AX" and he sang "Rape Me"(Nirvana), "Have a Nice Day"(Bon Jovi), "Love Addict"(Vamps) and "If I confess You'll Be Surprised"(SanUlLim) with "DickPunks"(Superstar K4`s second place). Mnet[disambiguation needed] asked Jung to do an open concert to attract more auditioners for the 5th season of Superstar K. His songs were "Into the Rain"(빗속에서, Lee Moon-Se), "Under the Shade of a Tree-line"(가로수아래서면, Lee Moon-Se) and "Mona Lisa"(모나리자, Cho Yong-Pil).
Jung Joon-young participated in Ansan Valley Rock Festival at Ansan on July 26, 2013. He sang "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" (Bob Dylan), "Sweet Child o' Mine" (Guns N' Roses) and "Hello + DanBalMueRi" (Cho Yong-Pil).[31]
Superstar K held the "All-Star" concert on Aug 4,2013 (five days before the new season 5 gets started). Jung Joon-young was a main MC and a guest for this concert. He sang "BakHa Candy"(박하사탕 YB Band) which was his second audition song of Superstar K4 and showed another appealing performance.[32]

Jung Joon-young appeared on the TV show "Ulzzang Generation Season 5 얼짱시대" [17] [34] (June 2011~ Sep 2011) before participating in the audition. This program is about good looking girls and boys from the real life. Joon Young's friends were "Ulzzang(good looking boys)" so he participated in this program following his friends. In February and July, 2012, he was invited to "Ulzzang Generation season 6 얼짱시대" as a special guest.
On December 3, "Beatle's Code"[35] " was the first entertainment program Jung featured in after his audition. He showed his sense of humour, his dancing talent and an ability to speak five languages. On December 10, 2012 Jung Joon-Young visited to HongKong to film "TAXI 택시 " and met PSY with Kim Gu-Ra and Jun Hyun-Mu (hosts of "TAXI 택시") before 2012 Mnet Asian Music Awards started. At this interview PSY said "I like Jung because his mentality is so special and unique. He looks a lot like me when I debuted." The next TV entertainment programs were "M! Countdown"[36] and "Three Idiots 세얼간이".[37] On March 21, 2013, Jung was a guest on the TV game show"Until We Become Kings켠김에 왕까지" and played an online game with Kim Tae-Hyun (main vocalist of Dickpunks).
In June 2013, Jung Joon-young participated in the music video of Lee Seung-chul (a judge of the superstark 4) as an actor.[33]
Jung Joon-young sang "Remember(DJ DOC)" on his first stage of the KBS TV Show "Immortal Song-Singing the Legend(불후의 명곡-전설을 노래하다" and he impressed the audience by performing the stunning and rocking performance on July 13, 2013.[38] He also sang "HaesukNamNyu"해석남녀 (COOL) on the same program and attracted all attention of the audience with an eye-catching performance on Aug 3, 2013.[39] On Nov. 2, 2013, on his third stage of this show, Jung Joon-young sang “Because I Love You널 사랑하니까”(Shin Seung Hoon) with his deep husky voice which was full of emotion and his song touched the listeners as well as Shin Seung Hoon(the composer of the song), so he complimented, “Even though it is beautiful to listen to this song, actually it’s hard to sing, but he did it pretty well by trying to use his voice like one of the musical instruments in the band.”
Jung Joon-young performed at the opening ceremony for the TV show "Challenge! Super Model Korea 도전! 수퍼모델 코리아" on Aug 15, 2013 and he participated in the main broadcast TV entertainment "Happy Together 해피 투게더" on the same day.[40] He proved his talent as a great singer and a good entertainer as well through the shows.
The Reality Show "Jung Joon-Young's Be Stupid" airs four episodes from Sep 10 to Oct 1, 2013 and describes the story behind the making of his album. It was reported that Jung Joon-young picked out the title 'BE STUPID' from Diesel 'Be Stupid' Advertising Campaign to express his wish to become almost stupid in order to show his passion for his unique music style.[41]
Jung Joon-young is paired up with Jeong Yu-mi on MBC TV's reality show "We Got Married 우리결혼했어요" and shows his charming, witty and distinct personality as a virtual husband four years younger from Sep 14, 2013.
Joon Young challenged in babysitting twin preschoolers and their baby brother on KBS's Reality Show "Star Babysitter-Come See Me스타베이비시터 날보러와요" on Sep 18, 2013 and won much praise from viewers by taking good care of the babies in his own fun way as a skillful babysitter.

As for the radio programs, Joon Young was a guest on "Bluenight"[42] (푸른밤 Jung Youb 정엽), "Date"(두시의 데이트 Ju Young-Hoon 주영훈), "Enjoy"(심심타파 Sin Dong 신동), "Old School"[43] (올드스쿨 Kim Chang-Youl 김창렬), "Kiss the radio"(키스 더 라디오Super Junior) and "Starry Night" (별이 빛나는 밤에Yoon Ha 윤하). From January 28 to March 3, 2013, Joon Young (with Roy Kim) became a temporary DJ on the Radio "Song of Hope at Noon"(정오의 희망곡)[44][45][46] for Kim Shin-Young (김신영) who had a health issue.
Featuring as the radio's guest and host, Jung showed his vocal ability range from Ballad to Heavy Metal. He sang "High and Dry"(Radiohead; Bluenight ), "Perfume"(Jung Joon-Young; Date), "What to Say"(Breeze; Date), "Where Did You Sleep Last Night"(Nirvana; Enjoy), "Knocking on Heaven's Door"(Bob Dylan; Old School ), "Californication"(Red Hot Chili Peppers; Kiss the radio) and "Alive"(Pearl Jam; Starry Night). During the DJ period, he set up the live music corner and sang "Beautiful"(Christina Aguilera), "Rain and You"(Park Jung-Hoon), "Confession"(Dellyspice), "What's Up"(4 Non Blondes), "Falling Slowly"(Glen Hansard), "Don't Cry"(Guns N'Roses), "Bed of Roses" (Bon Jovi), "Come As You Are"(Nirvana) and "Lying Is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off"(Panic! At the Disco).
On April 25, 2013, MBC had announced Jung Joon-young and Roy Kim would take over as DJs for ‘Close Friend’ from the UV's MUZE. They later added, “Both Jung Joon-young and Roy Kim are likely to become ‘Close Friend’ DJs. They’re adjusting their schedules.”[47]
From the sixth of May, Jung Joon-young started DJing for MBC FM4U "Close Friend", Jung also shared, “I am thankful for the good opportunity and will do my best to create a fun program.”[48][49] From Aug. 19, 2013 to Sept. 01, 2013, Jung hosted "Close Friend" on his own as a solo DJ.

Jung Joon-young received attention from the beginning of the audition because of his appearance, unique behaviour and attractive character traits. Many companies hired him as a model when the audition was over. "OB Beer" hired him as a "Cass" model during the audition[50] and "KoreaGM" hired him as a "Chevrolet" car model.[51][52] Jung worked for "Cheil Industries Fashion" as a fashion model for "Bike Repair Shop".[53] [54][55] CJ E&M hired him as an on-line game model for "Everybody's Marble" and a game site "MaGaeChon"(마계촌)".[56] Also he modelled for "CJ Hellovision" which is running "tving" (N-Screen Service).
Jung Joon-young revealed fashion pictorials with Vogue Girl, InStyle, Arena Homme and Oh Boy for the August issue. During the interview with these magazines, he talked about his life and his musical goal. Jung said "I really want to be a rock star.I want to hold a big concert in front of a lot of people who understand my music and like my voice."[57][58][59] Jung Joon-young wrapped up photo shoots for fall with 'Singles' for its 9th anniversary issue as well as 'Sure'. During his interview with 'Sure'. He shared, "I don't have much pride, but I do have a lot of self-confidence. Especially when it comes to the kind of music I like, I think I have major self-esteem in that aspect," adding, "My goal in life is clear. To succeed with music. Whether it'll be on a global or domestic stage, I just want to do music!"
Right after his hot debut, Jung Joon-young has been chosen as the new endorsement model for casual wear brand 'Pearly Gates' in October, 2013.
