Katherine "Katie" Addyman (previously Macey and Sugden) is a fictional character from the British soap opera Emmerdale, played by Sammy Winward. She made her first screen appearance on 18 July 2001.

Casting

On 10 July 2001, Rick Fulton of the Daily Record reported that Winward had joined the cast as Katie alongside Raine Davison, who played Eve Birch.[2] Fulton said the girls would "set pulses racing among Emmerdale's teenage bratpack."[2] Katie was introduced to the soap as the first love interest for Andy Sugden (Kelvin Fletcher).[2] Winward was fifteen when she joined the cast and she said "It is fantastic to start in Emmerdale with Raine. It is a great coincidence because we trained together at drama school. I can't wait to start."[2][3] A show spokesperson said there would be some "real eye-opening storylines" for the two girls and the rest of the teenage characters, dubbed the "village bratpack."[2] The spokesperson added "We launched them together because we want to show our viewers that we already have very strong teenage storylines to complement our strong teenage following."[2]

In June 2005, Winward went on maternity leave after giving birth to her first child. She returned to the show in February 2006.

Storylines

2001–05

Katie and Andy first meet in July 2001 when they are in detention at school and soon begin dating. Andy's adoptive brother, Robert (Karl Davies) tries to come between them and embarrass Andy by telling Katie that he cannot afford to take her out for dinner. However, Andy is given counterfeit money by Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) and takes Katie out for a romantic meal at Chez Marlon, ruining Robert's plan.

In September, Eve Birch (Raine Davison), Marc Reynolds (Anthony Lewis) and Ollie Reynolds (Vicky Binns), Donna Windsor (Verity Rushworth), Andy, Robert and Katie go to a club but miss the last bus home. To impress Katie, Andy steals a car but on the way home, Marc, who is driving, knocks down and kills their headmistress, Jean Strickland (Alex Hall). Terrified of the consequences, the group leave the body and burn the car but feeling guilty, they confess. Marc is jailed and the others receive community service.

While their friends enjoy their youth and freedom, Katie and Andy settle down, much to their fathers' horror. Determined to prove that they are old enough to have an adult relationship by deciding to have a baby, Katie gets pregnant but miscarries. Despite this, she and Andy stay together and when old enough, take over Butler's Farm but running the farm becomes Andy's priority while Katie's cold feet make her look for excitement. She begins an affair with Robert but Andy's half-brother, Daz Eden (Luke Tittensor), catches them and tells Andy, despite Katie and Robert's threats so Katie persuades Andy to put him into care. The wedding goes ahead but the affair continues until they are caught by Andy and Robert's younger sister, Victoria Sugden (Jessica Heywood). Robert bullies her to keep quiet but Katie leaves Andy and moves into a caravan with Robert, who cheats on her with Sadie King (Patsy Kensit), but Cain catches them and tells Andy who tells Katie so she leaves Robert. They spend a night together discussing their marriage and Andy suggests reconciling but Katie joins her father, Brian Addyman (Martin Reeve), and they part on good terms. Katie says goodbye to her friends Donna and Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) and Robert begs her to stay but she leaves.

2006–

Andy is visited by the police and informed, as Katie's next of kin, that she and her father are in hospital, following a car crash. Brian died but Katie is injured so Andy visits her in hospital and invites her to return to live with him in Emmerdale. Her mother, Caroline, also suggests that Katie join her in Greece but she chooses to reconcile with Andy and give their marriage a second chance. However, their decision is criticised, particularly by Daz, who moves out briefly but soon returns. Sure that she will cheat again, he kisses Katie and she rejects him angrily but they don't realize Jo Stiles (Roxanne Pallett) saw what happened and she uses it to blackmail Katie so she can stay living at the farm. Jo, realising Andy does not trust Katie, uses this to drive a wedge between them and soon she and Andy start sleeping together. Their marriage problems worsen when Katie struggles to bond with Andy's daughter, Sarah and Katie thinks she is pregnant but it is a false alarm. This makes Andy and Jo decide to tell Katie that they are together. Livid that they could carry on like that behind her back, she throws them out briefly but moves out herself as the lease is in Andy's name. Katie spends a night with David Metcalfe (Matthew Wolfenden) despite him dating Del Dingle (Hayley Tamaddon). Chas sees David and Katie together and tells Del who dumps David and leaves the village.

Now both friends and business partners with Perdita Hyde-Sinclair (Georgia Slowe), she spends more time with her and her husband, Grayson Sinclair (Christopher Villiers). Grayson helps Katie with the legal details of her divorce from Andy and she starts developing feelings for him. His mother, Rosemary King (Linda Thorson), is thrilled and hopes Katie will give her the grandchildren that Perdita can't. Rosemary encourages Katie but she refuses to behave like Jo, instead supporting Grayson when Perdita is sectioned and offers to be their surrogate but regrets it when she sees exactly how rocky Grayson and Perdita's marriage is. Unfortunately, Katie is already pregnant and threatens to abort the baby but Grayson, blackmailed by Perdy, persuades her not to. Katie stays with Grayson at Mill Cottage and is horrified to learn of Perdita's blackmail for sole custody and now with Grayson herself, knows Perdita feels guilty about her scheme, persuades her to destroy the evidence and then reveals that she and Grayson plan to raise the baby themselves. Perdita furiously lashes out, knocking Katie down but calls an ambulance, fearing a miscarriage. Katie is fine but Grayson begins playing games by publicly provoking Perdita to lose her temper and attack him physically so he can get her arrested and get a restraining order against her.

Grayson and Katie's relationship seems more stable than his marriage but Perdita tells Katie about Grayson's bisexuality and she warns him that if he cheats on her, she will leave him. Katie's relationship with Grayson ends when she realizes that he has been lying about seeing Perdy and paying her rent. She takes revenge by persuading him to give her £20,000 for her mother's "debts," planning to have the baby in London and have him adopted there but now feeling sorry for Perdita, she gives her the baby and the money, insisting that she leave the village. Grayson leaves, looking for her.

Katie helps Andy when she learns he has been domestically abusing Jo and gives him a job but fires him when he kisses her after he misinterprets signals and advises Jo to leave the village if she wants a new life without Andy.

After the King Family are declared bankrupt, Katie is escorted by security until new owners, Mark (Maxwell Caulfield) and Natasha Wylde (Amanda Donohoe), arrive. Mark and Katie soon become friends but Natasha is wary of her until Katie starts dating gamekeeper Lee Naylor (Lewis Linford), unaware that Nathan Wylde (Lyndon Ogbourne) likes her, too. He uses his position at Home Farm to manipulate them both as Katie prefers Lee. After an argument, Nathan and Katie spend a night together but she catches him leaving the next morning and realises that he doesn't want a relationship with her but he still objects when she asks Lee to move in when she learns that he is homeless. However, the situation ends when Lee tells Nathan things that she told him in confidence so she ends things with Nathan and asks Lee to move out. After Faye (Kim Thomson) and Ryan Lamb (James Sutton) arrive in the village, she gets to know Ryan and they start dating, despite his mother's objections. Mark tells Faye that Katie is a nice girl that can be trusted but Gennie Walker (Sian Reese-Williams) tells Faye about Katie being a surrogate so Faye invites her to dinner and grills her about her past, much to Ryan's horror. He insists Faye apologise and Ryan and Katie are happy until, after spending time with Maisie (Alice Coulthard) while Christmas shopping, he and Maisie realize they have feelings for each other. Not wanting to cheat on Katie, he ends things but they reconcile after Maisie and Ryan learn that they are half-siblings. Nathan, however, tells Katie about Ryan and Maisie's "inappropriate" relationship, leading Katie to end things with Ryan.

Katie begins a relationship with police officer Nick Henshall (Michael McKell), despite Andy's reservations. Nick tries to frame Andy by starting a fire that kills Terry Woods (Billy Hartman) and Viv Hope (Deena Payne). Katie learns that Nick started the fire and that his wife died in similar circumstances so Nick panics and takes her hostage before committing suicide. Katie is traumatised by the events and feels guilty that she ignored Andy's warnings. Katie becomes interested in Declan Macey (Jason Merrells) and his ex-wife, Ella Hart (Corrinne Wicks), tries to warn her off but Katie and Declan begin dating regardless. When Declan's daughter, Mia (Sapphire Elia), dies, he reveals that he was not her biological father and Katie supports him through his depression. Declan proposes twice to Katie but she turns him down. However, she does move in with him and they are happy together until Declan's half-sister, Megan (Gaynor Faye), visits and immediately clashes with Katie. Megan helps Declan organise a music festival and Katie works hard to convince Megan that she is with Declan because she loves him but Megan takes over and tells Katie about Declan's money troubles, causing them to argue. Katie briefly moves out but Megan apologises and asks her to return. Katie supports Megan when she reveals that she gave her son, Robbie (Jamie Shelton) up for adoption when she was younger. Declan finds Robbie and he moves in too. Robbie flirts with Katie and tries to persuade her to leave Declan but when she rejects him, Robbie starts making her feel uncomfortable. In retaliation, as Declan refuses to ask him to leave, she manipulates a situation in which Robbie tries to kiss her and uses the CCTV to film him attacking her. Declan believes her but Megan suspects the truth and blackmails Declan to let Robbie stay, causing Katie to move out. However, Declan apologises and he proposes again. Katie accepts, much to Robbie and Megan's horror, and Declan plans to keep all the festival profits and Katie agrees to help him. Megan interrupts Katie and Declan's wedding when Robbie tells her what has happened. However, she leaves and the couple marry. After an argument with Declan and a quad bike accident, Katie falls down a disused mine and after days of searching, Declan begins to lose hope of finding Katie alive, especially when she falls down another mine and the tunnel she was apparently using as an escape route collapses. She is later found by Sam Dingle (James Hooton) on the moors in a critical condition. Katie recovers but a shattered pelvis temporarily confines her to a wheelchair and further damage means that one of her ovaries has to be removed and scarring is discovered on her womb, making the chances of her having any more children minimal, much to her and Declan's disappointment. When Katie finally wakes up, she recalls her argument with Declan from before the accident. Much to his grief, she decides to leave indefinitely after having a talk with Andy. Declan confronts Andy and then cries to Megan that Katie's gone.

About a week later, she returns, hoping to mend her marriage, however the night before Declan had had a one night stand with Charity Tate (Emma Atkins). Declan's hesitant but takes her back and they leave for the weekend together. They also begin to consider IVF. When Katie is considering accepting Steve Harland's (Tom Mannion) offer to invest in a racehorse, Declan buys it for her instead. However, Katie tells Declan to return it to Steve when he buys the land Declan had hoped to use for the festival. After Declan and Megan tell her about the dead body found on the site, Katie tries to convince them to confess, even though that would risk them going bankrupt or getting arrested. Whilst confiding this to Chas, who knows about Declan's affair, Chas jumps to conclusions and asks who he's sleeping with. Katie later questions Chas about it and she reveals he had a fling with Charity. Katie decides to throw a party to "celebrate" the festival and requests the presence of Charity and Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson). There, she reveals how Declan was a cheating man. Afterwards, she slaps Charity and moves in with Chas and Cameron Murray (Dominic Power). After discovering that they were having troubles with their bank account, Katie moved in with Andy.

At the Woolpack, Katie was complaining to Chas about Andy having enough problems of his own involving Debbie Dingle (Charley Webb) and his children. Adam Barton (Adam Thomas) then offered to let her move in with him. They began flirting and when Declan came in he called them pathetic for toasting to being "young, free and single." They arrive at Andy's, late and drunk, but Adam sleeps on the sofa. In the morning, they continue their flirting until Adam leaves and Andy warns Katie, telling her to tell Adam they're just friends as he just broke up with Victoria. Katie later runs into Declan who tells her that she'll learn to forgive him. After meeting Adam at the bar again, they continued to flirt. They later left the bar, him with his arm around her. She left to call Declan and tell him to show up at Andy's so that they could "talk". Declan ended up walking in on Katie and Adam, after sleeping together. He was torn apart by this and ended up telling Andy he had to move out because he was helping Katie. Andy told Katie that she'd changed and she had to do what she could to help him and his kids.

Katie talked to Declan and convinced him that the only thing keeping them apart was the body. She told him that for them to stand a chance, he had to tell the police. Andy remained unsure of her plan. When Katie met Declan before the launch, she confessed that there was no hope of salvation for them and he admitted that he had not yet told the police about the body. She threatened to do it herself, but decided he wasn't worth it, as he could easily pay the workers to tell the police that Katie was covering it up. Declan later told Megan that she had been right about Katie all along. Katie promised Andy that she would help. Katie was shocked to discover Declan had made Nicola King (Nicola Wheeler) spy on her. Later, Katie walked in on Declan flirting with two girls he'd met at the launch, Erica and Helen. She announced that she hated him and wanted a divorce throwing her wedding rings at him. When Katie discovered Declan had let her horses out, she enlisted Adam's help to round them back up and apologised to him for using him, but he simply claimed there were worse people to be used by. They took the horses to Adam's farm, and Katie later showed up at Declan's to tell him. Declan tore up their contract and told her he hated her, too. Katie and Declan are in the middle of divorce proceedings.

When Victoria returned, her plans to reunite with Adam were ruined when Declan told her that Adam slept with Katie. Victoria moved in with Andy and a rivalry sparked between the girls when Victoria ordered Katie to move out, but Andy defended her. Katie was also seen betting with Rodney (Patrick Mower) and they seemed very close. She attended Brenda (Lesley Dunlop) and Bob's (Tony Audenshaw) "marriage". After Gennie's (Sian Reese-Williams) death, Katie gave Brenda flowers and offered her condolences, much to Brenda's appreciation. Katie ran into Victoria who was civil toward her, and it seemed like they had reached friendly terms. Katie was later seen comforting Chas.

Declan found Katie mourning Gennie and offered his comfort. Declan tries to make amends, but she mistakenly believes he only wants to know if she'll tell anyone about the body and leaves. Nicola offers to get things for Katie, but she refuses, deciding to go herself. Nicola tries to get Declan to rehire Katie, but he refuses. Katie tells Chas about the body. Chas tells her not to tell anyone, but Katie makes an anonymous phonecall anyway, as it was "what Gennie would have wanted." Scared that Declan would take her down with him, Katie then fled. The police became suspicious, believing that Declan was a murderer and had killed Katie for telling them about the body. Katie returned on 30 October 2013 for Alan Turner's funeral. She has reverted to her maiden name of Addyman since the breakdown of her marriage to Declan.
