The 2006-2007 season of Portuguese football will start after the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The professional competitions (Liga betandwin.com and League of Honour) will start on 27 August 2006, a week after the SuperCup Cândido de Oliveira between national champions FC Porto and Cup of Portugal runners-up Vitória FC "de Setúbal", to be played at the Estádio Municipal de Leiria. The first round of the Cup, played by clubs from the Third Division and Districtal Championship clubs, is schedulled to be played on 3 September 2006. This date corresponds also to the start of the Second Division. The Third Division starts on 10 September, while the Serie Azores of the Third Division begins a week later.

Overview

The professional competitions will shrink from 18 to 16 clubs following last season's promotions and relegations' modifications. SC Beira-Mar and C. Desportivo das Aves were promoted to the Liga, and FC Penafiel, Rio Ave FC, Vitória SC "de Guimarães" were relegated to the League of Honour.

In June 2006, CF «Os Belenenses», that finished in 15th last season was schedulled to be relegated. However, the Lisbon team presented a complaint to the Portuguese League for Professional Football regarding the use of a non-inscribed player (Mateus) by 14th placed Gil Vicente FC. If this proves to be correct, Gil Vicente will probably be relgated instead of Belenenses. As of June 13, 2006, the League hasn't come up with an answer.
