Guilty Gear Xrd
Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign- (ギルティギア イグザード, Giruti Gia Iguzādo) is an upcoming fighting game from Arc System Works. It is the fifth installment of the Guilty Gear series. Unlike its immediate predecessor the game will once again be a 2D fighting game. The game is being developed using Unreal Engine 3, with cel shaded graphics in place of hand drawn sprites. It is set to be released in arcades on the Sega RingEdge 2 arcade board with support for the ALL.Net P-ras MULTI Ver.2 system,[2] as well as the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.[1]
Overview
Continuing the style of frantic fighting action from previous games, the game is now presented in cel-shaded graphics, which use limited animation to replicate the feel of 2D sprites whilst allowing for more dynamic camera movement.[3] The game is set in 2187, one year after Guilty Gear 2: Overture. So far, thirteen playable characters have been revealed. Sol Badguy, Ky Kiske, Millia Rage, May, Chipp Zanuff, Potemkin, Venom, Axl Low, I-No, Faust, Slayer, and Zato-1 return from previous installments, while one new character, Bedman, has been revealed.[4]
Development
The first trailer for Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- was shown to the public during Arc System Works annual Japanese tournament Arc-Revo. The trailer consisted mostly of characters Sol and Ky fighting, with the occasional cinematic cut-ins, camera rotations and 2D-style animation to demonstrate the 3D cel shaded graphics being used in place of 2D sprites and cel animation. Despite this, the game uses limited animation to replicate the animation style of 2D sprites. A stinger at the end of the trailer then shows of Millia and Eddie (the latter reflected in the eyes of the former). The game was later confirmed to be running on Unreal Engine 3 by Taka Kawasaki of Epic Games Japan and no traces of 2D animation were used for gameplay footage in the trailer.[5]
Development of the game is being handled by an internal Arc System Works team codenamed "Team RED". Series creator Daisuke Ishiwatari is once again directing along with the same staff members behind the previous titles. The game uses the Sega RingEdge 2 arcade board, which was also used for Guilty Gear XX Λ Core Plus R.[2]
