gDiapers are a hybrid diaper, so users can choose to use either a cloth insert or a certified 100% biodegradable gRefill.

Design

Being a variation of a diaper, The gDiaper design consists of a 92% cotton/8% spandex machine washable outer "gPant," a machine washable, water-resistant snap-in "gPouch," and an absorbent inner pad. For absorbency either reusable cloth ("gCloth" or other options) or a flushable/compostable insert called a gRefill can be used. The flushable insert contents include Chlorine-free farmed tree fluff pulp and sodium polyacrylate. When ready to dispose of the flushable insert they are torn along the perforation to allow the fluff mixture contents to be emptied into a toilet before dropping in the outer teabag-like containment, stir the contents to encourage it to break up, then flushed. The wet flushable inserts can alternatively be home composted, inserts with fecal material can be taken by some commercial Composters. The outer pant features back closure to prevent Infants and toddlers from removing the diaper themselves.[1]

gDiapers gPants are available in a variety of colors and limited-edition prints, some with coordinating tops.

gDiapers can also be used with a cloth diaper insert, instead of the flushable insert. The company offers their own reusable insert called gCloth, though many other options from various sources (including standard infant size prefold diapers) can be used. gDiapers also offers flushable liners called gLiners to lay on top of cloth diapers, facilitating feces disposal.

In addition to the gPant covers, gRefill flushable inserts, gCloth inserts, and gLiners, the expanded product line now includes disposable biodegradable wipes ("gWipes"). Replacement snap-in gPouches are available separately in 6-packs. Diaper pail liners and wet bags for cloth users are also offered by the company. The gPants are sold in 2-packs through many retailers, bundled packs are available through the manufacturer and select retailers in the United States and Canada.

The disposable refill may be bio-degradable, but does have a downside. Namely that it contains the same 'super absorber' that all other disposable diapers contain. So good for the planet but not so good for baby.

History

Co-founders are Jason and Kimberley Graham-Nye. gDiapers began being sold in 2004. gDiapers are modeled after the design of Bohny Babies Ltd, New Zealand, "eenie" type diapers.[2]

Certification

gDiapers has received the Cradle to Cradle Design Certification Award, through William McDonough and McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC).[3]

This certification only covers the flushable insert and not the entire diaper product.
