Krasneno (Template:Lang-ru) is a rural locality (a selo) in Anadyrsky District of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Russia, located southwest of Anadyr. Population: 83 (2010 Census);[3] The village was formerly municipally incorporated as Krasneno Rural Settlement, but this was abolished in 2010 and the settlement is now part of Anadyrsky Municipal District inter-settlement territory.[4]

History

Krasneno was founded in 1957.[2] The name of the village literally means "red", although old maps show the village as called "Krasnyano", meaning rich or abundant in the Russian "old believers" dialect, in reference to fish stocks nearby.[8] Krasneno is located on the shores of Lake Krasnoye, from where the village gets its modern name with the lake being surrounded by red and brown rocks on its shoreline.[8] Around 2010, a number of houses were bought from Alaska as part of a refurbishment project in the village.[2]

Historically, the area was known for abundant fishing, with Beluga whale and Ringed seal entering the lake from Anadyrsky Liman[9] and due to its proximity to the former Anadyrsk Ostrog the area was famous for trade fairs between Russians and Chukchi.[9]

Demographics

The population as of 2010 was 83[3] down from an estimate in 2005, according to an environmental impact report prepared for the Kupol gold project, of 118,[10] up from 95 in 2003.[11] The population consists mainly of indigenous Chukchi, who make up around 90% of the population,[11] though there is also a small number of Russians living there too. In 2005, of the people living in the village, 92 were of indigenous origin.[12]

Economy

The village has a general store, primary school, post office and a cultural centre. Local infrastructure has been assisted recently by the delivery from Alaska of several cottages.[11] The economy is centred around traditional hunting and fishing,[2] unsurprising given the number of indigenous people living in the village.[11]
