BlazBlue: Chronophantasma (ブレイブルー クロノファンタズマ, BureiBurū: Kuronofantazuma) is a 2-D fighting game developed by Arc System Works. It is the third game of the Blazblue series, set after the events of BlazBlue: Continuum Shift. The game was originally to be released first as an arcade game in the fourth quarter of 2012,[1] which was later pushed forward to November 2012.[2] A PlayStation 3 version of the game was released in Japan on October 24, 2013,[3] while it will release in the United States on March 25, 2014. Despite previous releases being on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Chronophantasma will only be available for the latter.
Changes from Continuum Shift
Besides normal rebalancing and move updates, Chronophantasma features several revamped gameplay mechanics and features four exclusive characters to the story: Bullet, Azrael, Amane Nishiki, and Izayoi as well as two returning characters from the previous games: Mu-12 and Nu-13. The character sprites have also been redrawn and refined and several new songs were composed for the game. Most, if not all previous musical themes have been re-arranged. The storyline will also pick up after the events of Continuum Shift according to the trailers.[4]
A new mechanic called "Overdrive" has been added to the game, replacing the Gold Bursts from Continuum Shift. Green Bursts are still in but are the only form of Burst available. Distortion Drives such as Ragna's "Blood Kain", Taokaka's "Almost Becoming Two!", Litchi's "Great Wheel" and Bang's "Fu-Rin-Ka-Zan" have been retooled to be their respective characters' Overdrives. The length of an Overdrive increases the lower a character's health is, and performing an Overdrive stops the round timer while it is active.
Guard Primers have been removed entirely and the Guard Crush has been moved to a new mechanic called "Crush Trigger" where, at the cost of 25 Heat, a player may hit the A and B attack buttons simultaneously to cause a Guard Crush against blocking opponents, provided the opponent is not using Barrier Block.
Characters
New Characters
- Amane Nishiki
An effeminate young man clad in a kimono who is drawn to battle like it is a dance stage. He's armed with a seemingly living piece of cloth and his Drive, Spiral, involves transforming it into drills.
- Bullet
A mercenary who's been fighting and moving from battlefield to battlefield since a young age. Her Drive, Lock-On, allows her to rush towards her opponent to grab and throw them.
- Azrael
A fist-fighting soldier of Sector Seven[5] whose strength seems unnaturally high. He enjoys violence and relishes the idea that he is fighting over life and death. His Drive, The Terror, allows him to find weak points on his opponents to exploit.
- Izayoi
The true form of Tsubaki Yayoi after the full release of the Sealed Weapon Izayoi's powers. Her Drive, Scarlet Justice, allows her to increase the speed and power of all her special attacks in Gain Art Mode.
- Kagura Mutsuki
The head of one of the most powerful Duodecim families and one of the NOL's greatest generals. He is secretly one of Tenjo's entrusted disciples and plans to overthrow the Imperator to ensure that Tenjo's son, Homura, succeeds in reforming NOL. His Drive, Black Gale, puts him into a stance where he can perform different moves.[3]
- Yuuki Terumi
Previously appearing under the guise of Hazama, he has since dropped the veil and revealed his true colors. One of the Six Heroes, he is a man composed of a cool and sly wit and is obsessed with killing and destroying everything and everyone. Terumi's moveset revolves around use of the heat gauge and as such he has more Distortion Drives than regular special attacks and his Drive, Force Eater, allows him to steal heat from his opponent.[3]
- Kokonoe
Genius scientist of Sector Seven and the daughter of two of the Six Heroes, Jubei and Nine. Kokonoe is being made playable as a post-launch DLC character in the PlayStation 3 version of Chronophantasma.[6] She has two Drives: Graviton allows her to place a device out on the field and Activate allows her to switch that device between a Gravity mode which pulls her opponent towards it and a Repulsion mode which pushes her opponent away from it.
Sales
BlazBlue: Chronophantasma sold over 72,000 copies in its first week on sale, making it the best debut in the BlazBlue series so far.[7]
