St. Aloysius Gonzaga Secondary School is a Catholic high school located in the Erin Mills community of Mississauga, Ontario, named after Saint Aloysius Gonzaga. The school opened in Mississauga in 2001, after spending a year as a holding school in Georgetown. It is a joint venture between the city of Mississauga and the Dufferin Peel Catholic District School Board. The school is a multi-use facility, attached to the Erin Meadows Community Centre and Library, which is part of the Mississauga Library System. St. Aloysius Gonzaga Secondary School currently has a TV studio and editing room, auto centre, construction department, greenhouse, music room, drama stage and theatre, and a weight lifting room. They are well known for their excellent athletic reputation with the Sr Boys Hockey Team winning OFSAA in 2009, and the Varsity Girls Hockey Team winning OFSAA in 2013.
According to the Fraser Institute, it is currently the top ranked high school in Mississauga and 23rd out of 718 schools in Ontario.[2]
The atrium, community meeting rooms, library, and swimming pool are shared with the City of Mississauga.[3]
Rivalry With John Fraser Secondary School
St. Aloysius Gonzaga Secondary School is also heavily known for it's competitive academic and athletic rivalry with the neighbouring high school, John Fraser Secondary School. The school has had many competitions and events held against each other and many students have also gotten involved in fights trying to protect the pride of their respective schools. In many school years, students have not been allowed to enter the opposing school and additionally, alternate lunch and end-of-school times have been chosen by each school. John Fraser Secondary is located just 600m from Gonzaga which results in the rivalry to be steepened even further.
