Starting Over Again is a 2014 Philippine dramedy-romantic film directed by Olivia Lamasan, written by Carmi Raymundo and distributed by Star Cinema.[3]The film stars Toni Gonzaga, Piolo Pascual and Iza Calzado.[4] It was released in the Philippines on February 12, 2014 and selected theaters in the United States on February 15, 2014.[5]

Production

The development began eight months prior the release date with a working title of "Unlove You".[7] The film was written by Carmi Raymundo who was behind some of Star Cinema films like It Takes a Man and a Woman(2013) and Bride for Rent(2014).[5]According to her, her vision is to stray away from traditional Filipino love story which is too mainstream already in the Philipppine' market, so the film was created with an aim to tell a love story with a twist.[6]Meanwhile, it was directed and produced by Olivia Lamasan, the woman behind successful films such as Milan(2004), In My Life(2009), In the Name of Love(2011) and The Mistress(2012). [8]According to her, the film is a story of a lover wishing a second chance. [9]Despite being the head of ABS-CBN's creative department, Lamasan was told to do a film that would fit Pascual, in order to make the reunion worth it since they hadn't do any project for the last decade.[8]The film also serves as a reunion not only with Pascual and Lamasan, but to the lead actor and actress too, wherein 13 years ago, they have been together in a soda commercial.[10][9]On an article by Manila Bulletin, it was stated that Malou Santos personally chose Gonzaga to portray the lead role.[11]

Aya Tantiangco of Spot.ph noted the film's similarity with One More Chance in terms of story and character.[13] Tantiangco awarded the film 3.5 out of 5 stars and said that it is "funny" and well-written romantic-comedy flick.[13] However, she criticizes Gonzaga's character as "shallow", but notified Pascual's character as "mature" and "outstanding".[13]Zig Marasigan of Rappler praised how the pacing of the movie goes, that makes the audience realize that a perfect love story can also have flaws.[18]He also called the story "realistic", "satisfying" and "brave".[18] However, he criticizes the film's tone and said that it is questionnable inserting a comedy in a dramatic and painful scene.[18]Florence Hibionada of TheDailyGuardian said that the scenes are "memorable" and worth it.[19] She also noted the film's unpredictability and sense of direction.[19]

Rianne Hill Soriano of Yahoo! expressed dismay on most scenes that she described as "annoying".[20]She criticizes the pre-climax scenes as "lame" and the hospital scene for the character's closure as "disappointing".[20]Philbert Ortiz-Dy awarded the film 2 stars out of 5 and states that the supposedly mature film turned to a completely novicely-made one.[14] He also stressed that it "failed to take its own advice", wherein the film ended up the old way.[14]
