Rutherfurd Hall is located in Allamuchy Township, Warren County, New Jersey, United States.

The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.[1]

History

Rutherfurd Hall was the estate of husband and wife Winthrop Chanler Rutherfurd and Alice Rutherfurd. Construction began in 1902, and included a mansion, gardens, boathouse, swimming beach, hydroelectric powerhouse, 9-hole golf course, and kennels.

Rutherfurd Hall is one of the last extant large country estates in New Jersey constructed at the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries, and represents the country life movement which began in America following the Civil War, when the wealthy constructed large estates in rustic settings near major cities.

In 1948, the property was gifted to the Congregation of the Daughters of Divine Charity, who used it as a convalescent facility for retired nuns.

An additional wing was added to the mansion in 1959.

The property was sold to the State of New Jersey and the Allamuchy Township School District in 2007.[1]

In 2013, the State of New Jersey awarded $50,000 to the school district for a preservation project at Rutherfurd Hall.[3]

Design

The mansion was designed by Whitney Warren, and is a Tudor Revival brick and stone structure occupying three floors, with approximately 50 rooms.[1]

The grounds were designed by the Olmsted Brothers, with the intent of creating a picturesque landscape of "well-kept, simple neatness."[4]

Current use

Rutherfurd Hall is currently owned and managed by the Allamuchy Township School District, and is used as a museum and community education facility. It is also rented for private functions.[5]

The property is located next to Allamuchy Mountain State Park.
