The Shaw Prize is established by Sir Run Run Shaw (邵逸夫 1907–), a leader in the media industry in Hong Kong and a long-time philanthropist, to, in the official words, honor "individuals, regardless of race, nationality and religious belief, who have achieved significant breakthrough in academic and scientificresearch or application, and whose work has resulted in a positive and profound impact on mankind".
