The Raid 2: Berandal (meaning "hooligans") is an Indonesian action film directed by Gareth Evans; it is a sequel to the 2012 hit The Raid: Redemption and was announced in 2011. The film has a release date of March 28, 2014.[2][3][4]
Iko Uwais will reprise his role as Rama. In addition, the film stars Alex Abbad, Julie Estelle, Tio Pakusadewo, Arifin Putra, Oka Antara, and Cecep A. Rahman. Japanese actors Ryuhei Matsuda, Kenichi Endo and Kazuki Kitamura are also joining the film.
Plot
After fighting his way through scores of gangsters and madmen to escape a drug kingpin's nest, rookie Jakarta cop Rama (Iko Uwais) thought it was done and he could resume a normal life, but he is wrong. Rama's opponents in the fateful raid operation were nothing more than small fish swimming in a pond much larger than he ever imagined, and his victory over the small crime-infested tenement building has attracted the attention of much larger and fiercer predators up the Jakarta underworld food chain. Now his family is at risk, and Rama has only one choice to protect his wife and baby; He must go undercover to enter the criminal underworld and climb through the hierarchy of competing forces to identify the corrupt politicians and police pulling the strings at the top. Rama begins a new odyssey of violence, forcing him to take on a new identity as the violent offender "Yuda". In prison he must gain the confidence of Uco (Arifin Putra) to join his gang, risking his whole life to bring the corruption in his police force to an end.
Cast
- Iko Uwais as Rama / Yuda. The rookie S.W.A.T. unit member turned undercover police. Rama integrates himself as a foot soldier in the Bangun crime family in order to uncover corruption in his police force. The higher Rama rises through Bangun's mob ranks, the better his chances of identifying crooked cops with mob ties. But the higher he rises, the more he risks his true identity being discovered.
- Arifin Putra as Uco. Bangun's only son. Uco is next in line to the throne of the biggest crime family in jakarta. Until then, he must serve as an enforcer and collector for his father's underworld empire.
- Oka Antara as Eka. Adviser to the head of the biggest crime family in Jakarta. Eka serves as Bangun's right hand man, and would be the next in line to rule Bangun's empire if it waren't for Bangun's son, Uco.
- Tio Pakusadewo as Bangun. The feared mob boss who runs crime in Jakarta. He has ruled the city with the Goto family from Japan in relative peace.
- Alex Abbad as Bejo. A young, self-made gangster with ambitions of greatness and an arsenal of assassins ready to die for him. Bejo's ascent in Jakarta's underworld threatens the balance of power between the Goto and Bangun crime families.
- Julie Estelle as Alicia a.k.a "Hammer Girl", a ruthless hired assassin who's especially gifted with claw hammers. Hammer Girl and her brother, "Baseball Bat Man" left a broken home and an abusive father in search of greener pastures, which left death and destruction for anyone standing in their way.
- Ryuhei Matsuda as Keiichi, Goto's son and successor. Measured and cunning, Keiichi studies his father closely while preparing to emerge from Goto's shadow.
- Kenichi Endo as Goto, Boss of the Goto family. After years of fighting with Bangun for supremacy in Jakarta's underworld, Goto and Bangun put their differences aside and rule the city between them. While they work together to fight any threaths to their power, the truce is fragile and the trust is weak.
- Kazuki Kitamura as Ryuichi. Goto's right hand man, translator, and adviser. Like Eka, the only thing that stands between Ryuichi and the Goto throne is Goto's son Keiichi.
- Cecep Arif Rahman as "The Assassin". Little is known about The Assassin other than his choice of weapons and his loyalty to Bejo. Armed with two kerambit (short curved knives), The Assassin's heart is as cold as the steel of his weapons.
- Cok Simbara as Bunawar. Chief of Jakarta's anti-corruption task force, always one step away from identifying and arresting crooked police officers who work with Jakarta's mob families. Using Rama as his secret weapon, Bunawar hopes to finally bring the whole empire of corruption down to its knees.
- Yayan Ruhian as Prakoso. Bangun's most loyal and dedicated assassin, once lived a life of luxury, but has since led a life as a vagabond. He is the key to Bangun's survival in the city; the eye and ears that help control every aspect in the city.
- Very Tri Yulisman as "Baseball Bat Man". Brother to "Hammer Girl". He rescued his sister from the hands of an abusive father and broken home. They now make their way through life as a formidable duo of hired assassins.
- Donny Alamsyah as Andi, Rama's Brother, now become the ruler of 'Tama' gang (the drug kingpin from the prequel movie)
- Epy Kusnandar as Topan, a porn boss.[5]
- Roy Marten as Reza, Commissioner of Jakarta police department.
- Zack Lee as Bemi
- Fikha Effendi as Isa, Rama's wife.
- Hengky Solaiman as Andi and Rama's father.
- Marsha Timothy
- Pong Harjatmo
- Deddy Sutomo
Production
Development
Following Merantau, Gareth Evans and his producers began to work on a movie project called Berandal (which is Indonesian for "thugs"), a large-scale prison gang movie intended to star not only Merantau actors Iko Uwais, Yayan Ruhian, and Donny Alamsyah reprise his role, but also an additional pair of international fight stars. A teaser trailer was shot, but the project proved to be more complex and time consuming than they had anticipated.[6] After a year and a half, Evans and the producers found themselves with insufficient funds to produce Berandal, so they changed to a simpler, but different story with a smaller budget. They called the project Serbuan Maut (The Raid).[7]
While developing The Raid in script form, Evans considered the idea of creating a link between it and the initial project, Berandal. It was later confirmed that Berandal will serve as a sequel to The Raid.[8][9] Evans has also stated his intention to make it a trilogy.[10]
Sony has purchased the film for U.S., Latin American and Spanish markets. Alliance/Momentum has purchased the film for the United Kingdom and Canada; Koch Media has acquired the film for German speaking territories; Korea Screen has purchased the film for the Korean market; and HGC has acquired the film for China. Deals for other major territories are currently under negotiation.[11]
Titled as "The Raid 2" announced for the U.S. market, the sequel will have a “significantly larger” budget than its predecessor, and its production schedule will take approximately 100 days.[12] The pre-production is expected to begin in September 2012 while the filming is expected in January 2013.[13][14]
The studio announced a new cast in December 2012. Indonesia local stars Julie Estelle (Female lead role on "Macabre") will take the role of Alicia "The Hammer Girl", Marsha Timothy (Female lead role on "The Forbidden Door"), with other parts going to Merantau baddie Alex Abbad, Mathias Muchus and Tio Pakusadewo. Internationally renowned silat practitioner Cecep Arif Rahman has also signed on for a major part.[15] Though there does not appear to be an official announcement yet, word is starting to trickle out about some of the international cast joining the sequel to the Indonesian action hit The Raid. Matsuda Ryuhei (Blue Spring, Nine Souls, Nightmare Detective), Endo Kenichi (a Takashi Miike regular) & Kitamura Kazuki (The Japanese lead in Mo Brothers film Killers) will be joining the cast.[16]
Filming
In January 2013, PT Merantau Films and XYZ Films announce the start of production.[17] The filming process took about 7 months ended in July 2013.[18]
The film's lead DoP Matt Flannery tweeted that at least 3 RED cameras were used in a test shoot of a chase scene.[19][20] Gareth Evans mentioned on his Twitter that they were using RED Scarlet for 95% of the shoot, Epic for slow mo, and Go Pro 3 for quick cuts during the car chase.[21]
Release
A teaser trailer was released on Twitchfilm at November 6, 2013[22] followed by a longer Indonesian trailer later in December 31, 2013.[23] The US trailer was released on January 21, 2014.[24]
The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 21, 2014.[25] The US release is in March 28, 2014.[4][26]
Reception
Early reception has been very positive, the film currently holds ratings of 94 percent from Rotten Tomatoes and 79 percent from Metacritic. Many have praised the film for maintaining the action sequences that made the first film so great, as well as improving upon the plot and the dialogue which its predecessor was criticized for. Berandal also received five-star reviews from The Daily Telegraph[27] and Total Film.[28]
