existing video from Wikimedia Commons, the Internet Archive, Library of Congress or other free sources and embed them into Wikipedia articles.

video for articles and topics, even if you don't know how to shoot or edit

Visual literacy training

One of the more successful way of training new folks in visual literacy is through patterns. One such pattern that is used in journalism circles is the "BBC 5 shot" pattern, pioneered by Michael Rosenblum. (See the Wikipedia article Sandbag for an example of this, done by Fuzheado). It states that all stories should be human-oriented, and always consist of this sequence as a start:

  1. Closeup on the hands
  2. Closeup on the face
  3. Wide shot
  4. Over the shoulder shot
  5. Unusual shot

All these should follow the basic visual literacy rules:

  1. Frame the subject using the rule of thirds, for framing a subject
  2. Don't move the camera, treat each shot like a still shot
  3. Don't cross the line of action. Stay on one side of the subject so that there is visual continuity
