Shahganj is a city and a municipal board in Jaunpur district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

After Jaunpur, Shahganj has some of the biggest grain, grocery and general both wholesale and retail markets in the North-Eastern UP. Being well connected via Railways and Roadways, it plays a major part in the local economy. The nearby villages and towns are prosperous relative to many prominent districts of the state. It is also home to the only state owned sugar cane factory of the region. Shahganj is famous for its Ramlila's and Durga Puja festivals and is also famous for "Shah-Panja" (Rauza of Hazrat Ali). This place is visited by many pilgrims specially on Thursdays.

As of 2011 India census, Shahganj had a population of 761,994. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Shahganj has an average literacy rate of 59%, Lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 61%, and female literacy is 57%. In Shahganj, 16% of the population is under 6 years of age.

St. Thomas Inter College and Public Inter-College are prominent colleges of Shahganj both were started in 1930 approx. Other important schools are Moon Inter College, Eden Public School, Sir Syed Inter College and Maharishi Vidya Mandir. New schools like St. Xavier School, St. Joseph School, South Indian School, Sunrise Public School, Udayan Academy are constantly being opened. An Industrial Training School named Basanti Devi ITI is running since 2011 July and Idara Talim-o-Tarbiyat Junior High School is also running since 1972. JCI Shahganj is famous social organisation founded in Nov 1980. Jyotsana is an organisation of doctors that works for social welfare and physically challenged.

Connectivity

Shahganj (SHG) is a railway junction from where one line goes to Azamgarh, Chhapra and Gorakhpur while other line goes to Varanasi, Faizabad and Lucknow. It is connected to Lucknow, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Amritsar, Jaipur, Jhansi & Ahmedabad. Buses are available for Lucknow at regular intervals. Nearest airport is at Babatpur, Varanasi which is approximately 90 km from Shahganj.

Market of Shahganj is one of the best in the area with Police Station at its centre. Market is oriented around Jaycees Chauraha and Irankiana.
