Dance of Death is Iron Maiden's 13th studio album, released on September 8, 2003.
The album marks the first participation in songwriting by Nicko McBrain, who co-wrote the song "New Frontier".
The song "Montségur" is about the Albigensian Crusade which persecuted the Cathars, a renegade christian sect and believed to be associated with the Templar Knights. The Crusade followed the complete destruction of Béziers and murder of 10,000 people (1209), the sacking of Carcassonne after a failed truce (1210) and the battle of Montségur, where the last of the Cathars were executed. Quote from Albigensian Crusade article: 'According to Caesar of Heisterbach the papal representative, Abbot Arnaud-Amaury, declared "Caedite eos! Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius" — Latin for "Slay them all! God will know his own."'
The song "Paschendale" is about The Battle of Passchendaele in the First World War.
The album once again brought costumes to Maiden's stage show. During "Dance of Death" Bruce Dickinson would wear theatrical masks and a cape while moving around the stage. At the end he would dress as the Grim Reaper for the final chorus. During the 1984-1985 World Slavery Tour Dickinson would wear a mask during the song "Powerslave". Dickinson regularly wears a British Army redcoat jacket during performances of "The Trooper".
