Dave Sale is an American singer-songwriter who achieved notability as Camus with his 1997 [1], a release on Atlantic Records which also had a song featured on Baywatch episode "Out of the Blue" alongside Cyndi Lauper.[2] In this project he had the opportunity to collaborate with notable Producers David Kahne and Kevin Killin. A direct descendant of the Dutch who settled New Amsterdam, his parents were intellectuals at Cornell University. Sale has been called "the Bob Dylan for the junque generation"; previous to the Camus project, Sale was active in New Orleans operating the successful Street Records, an indie label featuring local and regional new and indigenous musicfrom 1992–97. He also produced, engineered or consulted on projects for diverse musicians such as Rowland Howard,[3] Willie Deville, Winton and Branford Marsalis and BeauSoleil to name a few during this period.
Sale produced former Squirrel Nut Zippers vocalist Katharine Whalen's 2007 release Dirty Little Secret on Koch Records.[4] Dirty Little Secret was also cited by No Depression Magazine as a "Genre Busting Beauty".[5]
Sale has directed documentaries On the Bus and several music videos for major labels. He has created directed numerous commercials. He co wrote the film Dark Star (in preproduction).
Sales sometimes eccentric writing was described as dazzling and seductive by NPR's David Dye during a World Cafe. [6] However, his work has also been considered "uneven".[7]
Sale's song "Famous Monster" was selected as a "best new Halloween song".[8]
Presently engaged in the production of Saturday Night Murder Ball, an epic rock opera style production, Sale also has plans for a new Camus release in 2010 and a feature film.
Sale's new band is Ivory League, which released the Monster in October of 2013.
