Center Grove High School (colloquially known as CG) is a four star high school located in Greenwood, Indiana, United States. The mascot is a Trojan. The principal is Doug Bird. Assistant principals are Sandy Hillman (2010 State Assistant Principal of the Year), Trisha Ferguson, and William Benjamin Betts. Jacob Short serves as Dean of Students. CGHS has a variety of clubs, programs, and sports for students to participate in.

School Format

The school operates on a block eight schedule with each class around 90 minutes long and meeting every other day. The days are based on the school's colors. Red Days consist of periods 1, 2, 3 (STaR), 4, & 5. White Days consist of periods 6, 7, 8 (STaR), 9, & 10. STaR (Students Teachers and Relationships) is the school's 30 minute prep period, replacing the IRP (individual resource period) of past years. The teacher who supervises the students during STaR is considered the homeroom teacher of the students. Lunch period takes place during period 4 and 9 of each day and are based on what area of the school that the student is in during that time. Classes begin at 7:35 each day, and in the 2007-08 school year, CGHS implemented a new system in which every Wednesday school is dismissed at 2:05PM instead of the usual 2:50PM for teacher planning and meetings, instead of having half days every so often. Passing periods between classes are 6 minutes long. They are considered as one of the best schools academically in Indiana.

Center Grove High School has a variety of different extracurricular sports and activities students can take part in throughout the year. Center Grove is very good at sports, competing against schools twice as big.

Center Grove Television

Center Grove Television (commonly referred to as CGTV) is a credit-earning class which broadcasts announcements to the school daily via classroom televisions. All on air talent is directed and performed by students. Students also create the graphics and work the cameras. CGTV redesigned its presentation in the school year of 2011-2012.

The Trojaneer

The Trojaneer is CGHS's student newspaper. The paper is written, designed, and published by students that are accepted to the class based on their journalism and/or visual design skills. The Trojaneer staff meets once every two days during class period 5. The paper is funded by advertisements sold by the students. The newspaper has also recently launched a website the Trojaneer Online. The newspaper if viewable in .pdf form on the website Issuu.

Enrollment

Center Grove High School is a public high school. As of 2013, there were 2387 students.[2] Freshman through senior class attends the school along with students in the special services program. Letters are sent o students who are accepted by assistant principal, Minerva Mcgonagall.

Recent Technology Upgrades

During the summer vacation and fall semester of 2007, approximately 25 classrooms around the school were outfitted with new, high-tech projection systems, including DVD/VCR decks, document cameras, and a computer & audio interface system. It is now in every classroom here and at both middle schools, and many elementary school classrooms. Also new in 2007, the school upgraded its old online grade program from Centerpoint to Skyward, which still allows students and parents to keep track of grades, attendance, and other information from their computers at home. Students were also assigned new Gmail.com school-filtered email accounts, and some teachers took advantage of the school-sponsored Dropbox online course management program. At the start of the 2013-2014, all students received Apple iPads for schoolwork.[3]

NASC Conference 2010

Center Grove High School was the last school to host the National Association of Student Councils annual conference. The conference moved to a hotel-only affair. Though the decision to move the conference out of schools is a controversial one to the steering committee at Center Grove, the NASC board made the move in hopes of increasing attendance to the conference. Other high school groups such as Key Club International have been doing this for years and it has been quite successful. Center Grove High School won its bid to host in 2006. NASC 2010 Home Page

Football Program

The Center Grove Trojan Football team won the 2008 Indiana 5A Football State Championship. Under the leadership of coach Eric Moore, the Trojans scored 22 points in the last six minutes of the game to beat Carmel High School. This broke the state record for the largest comeback in a state championship game. Notable players on the 2008 Trojan team were: Quarterback Jordan Luallen, Running backs Luke Swift, Matt Adams, Tanner Riley, Trey Thompson, Kyle Jones, and Anthony Elias.

Basketball Program

The Center Grove basketball program was led by Bill Zych from 1993-2003 (Currently Pike High School coach). He led the Trojans to a sectional title in his first year in 1993 and then failed to win another sectional title. Some of his notable players included: Chad Maddox, Scott Kitchel, Greg Marlin, Eric McClurg, and Joel Hobson. Cliff Hawkins took over in 2004 and struggled in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference conference his first few years. The 2006-2007 year was a turning point for Coach Hawkins and the Trojan basketball squad. The 06-07 team went 19-4 beating Eric Gordon’s North Central Panthers at North Central High School (Indianapolis)to win the schools first MIC title. The team was led by a large group of Seniors that included Tyler Kitchel, Andrew Bowman, Louie Kamo, and underclassman Corey Gray. Coach Hawkins say continued success with the emergence of Indiana University walk-on Johnny Marlin. In 2010-2011 season the Trojans won their first sectional title since 1993. Other notable players Coach Hawkins has coached includes Joe Reed, Andy Smeathers, and Jason Smeathers.[4]

Music Program

Center Grove High School is known for an outstanding music department. The Center Grove Marching Band, directed by Kevin Schuessler, is the 1995 Bands of America Grand National Champion and 2009 Class AAA National Champion. The Center Grove Choral Program has received numerous national awards and honors. The Indoor Percussion Ensemble has been a WGI medalist four times including the 2005 and 2006 WGI Scholastic World Champion. The Winter Guard is a three-time WGI World Champion and 28-time finalist from 1984-2011. The Concert Percussion Ensemble was selected to perform at the 2010 Midwest Clinic in Chicago, IL and the 2011 Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Indianapolis IN.

The Center Grove Drumline performed in the Bridgestone Super Bowl XLVI Halftime Show with Madonna. The drumline was made up of 100 members from around Indianapolis. The event was the most-watched moment in television history, viewed by over 113 million Americans.

Notable Alumni

Aaron Halterman - Former member of the Houston Texans, Miami Dolphins, San Diego Chargers, and Indianapolis Colts. He earned a Super Bowl ring as a member of the Colts' practice squad in Super Bowl XLI.

Brienne Pedigo-Christopher - Former auto racing pit reporter employed by ESPN and ESPN on ABC for NASCAR and formerly for the Indy Racing League.[5]

Center Grove Community School Corporation

History

A small country school building was originally established in 1884 and was erected in the center of a large grove of trees on the property at the Southeast corner of Morgantown and Stones Crossing Roads. It is generally accepted that the school owes its name to being in the center of the grove of trees or possibly in the center grove of several stands of trees. The last remaining tree stood proudly through the 1960s to the 1980s near the center of a parking lot between the south end of the high school built in the 1960s [verify] and an administrative building completed in the 1970s [verify].

Surviving the consolidation of small schools that began in the 1960s [ref needed], the school continued to expand as the population of the incorporated school district. To accommodate the population growth [ref baby boomer, suburban growth], a series of building projects created a separate middle school and multiple elementary schools [dates]. Eventually, shifting and expansion created up to six elementary schools, as of January 2011. With the closing of West Grove Elementary and the addition of Center Grove Middle School North, there are currently five elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school in the Center Grove Community School corporation. The school originally served as a safe haven for the Ku Klux Klan. early yearbooks show graduating classes in klan garb and hoods
