Template:Big Brother housemates Big Brother 2 is the current second season of the Canadian reality television series Big Brother. It is based upon the Dutch series of the same name, which gained notoriety in 1999 and 2000. The series is produced by Endemol USA and Insight Productions. The season premiered on March 5, 2014.[1] and will end after 71 days on May 8, 2014. The series revolves around fifteen strangers living in a house together with no communication with the outside world. They are constantly filmed during their time in the house, and are not permitted to communicate with those filming them. One HouseGuest, known as the Head of Household, has the task of nominating two of their fellow HouseGuests for eviction. The winner of the Power of Veto can then save one of the nominees, forcing the Head of Household to name a replacement nominee. The HouseGuests then vote to evict one of the nominees, with the HouseGuest who received the most votes being evicted from the house. When only two HouseGuests remain, the previously evicted HouseGuests will decide which of them will win the grand prize.

Development

The series aired on Slice for the second year in a row.

Following numerous seasons of Loft Story (2003–09)[2][3] and a season of the French adaption of Big Brother (2010)[4] it was confirmed that Shaw Media and Slice had picked up the format and would air the first English season in the country in 2013.[5] The first season premiered in February 2013 to a positive critical and commercial reception.[6][7] The show continued to have success, at one point becoming the most watched series on the channel.[8] The second season was officially confirmed on June 5, 2013.[9] On the success of the series, Barbara Williams with Shaw Media stated "Last season, our Canadian edition of Big Brother exceeded all expectations, bringing in record audiences and engaging fans in ways we’d never done before [...] With season two chock-full of opportunities for viewers at home to influence the house and never before seen show-altering twists, our new batch of HouseGuests and fans are in for a wildly exciting ride."[10] Casting for the season began on August 1, 2013.[11] Much like the previous season, Robyn Kass of Kassting Inc. was over the casting process.[12][13] Potential HouseGuests could apply online until October 25, while six open casting calls were held throughout Canada from September to October.[14] Like the previous season, applicants were required to be from Canada.[15]

Arisa Cox returned to host the season.[16] In February 2014, it was confirmed that there would be a total of fifteen HouseGuests participating in this season; this is the same amount as the previous year.[17] Series executive John Brunton said of the season's twist "It’s a major, major thing that we’re pulling off. We’re going to do something at the beginning that again, nobody’s seen on any Big Brother anywhere [...] It’s going to be a freakin’ barnburner, people are going to be on the edge of their seats."[18] The cast was officially revealed on February 26, 2014.[19] Despite the announcement of fifteen HouseGuests, only fourteen were revealed; it was later revealed that the fifteenth HouseGuest would not be discovered until the premiere night.[20][21] Motivational speaker Paul Jackson was the oldest HouseGuest this season at age 43, while Rachelle Diamond was the youngest at age 20.[22] Both Paul and Sarah Miller were the only HouseGuests this season over the age of 30, with Jackson being the first HouseGuest on the Canadian edition to be over the age of 40.[23] HouseGuests Rachelle and Jon Pardy were students, while Heather Decksheimer and Kenny Brain were models.[24] It was later revealed that three potential HouseGuests had moved into a secret room, and that the Canadian public would vote for one of them to enter the house following the second eviction.[25] Scott Bosse, a "drag queen" from Nova Scotia, was rumored to be a HouseGuest prior to the start of the season; it was later revealed he was one of the three potential HouseGuests.[26] Allison White, a psychiatric nurse from Newfoundland, and metal worker Nate Sandri were the other two candidates.[27][28][29] The HouseGuests officially entered the house on February 27, 2014.[30]

The series officially premiered on March 5, 2014 and aired a total of three episodes each week.[31] The schedule used for Big Brother 2 was the same as that of the previous season.[32] On Thursday's episode, there was a live eviction, followed by the Head of Household competition. Arisa Cox was the host for these episodes, and interviewed the evicted HouseGuests each week. The Sunday episode shows the nomination ceremony, as well as any luxury or Have-Not competitions that took place that week. The Wednesday episode shows both the Power of Veto competition and the Power of Veto ceremony. These two episodes do not feature a host. Episodes premiered at 9 PM Eastern each night.[33] It was later confirmed that the Big Brother spin-off series, Big Brother: After Dark, would return and air on Slice.[34] The series provided an uncensored live feed from the house, airing for three hours every night.[35] A new spin-off series, the Big Brother Side Show, aired on Thursdays and was hosted by former HouseGuests Gary Levy and Peter Brown.[36] Along with the televised series, Big Brother 2 featured live feed streaming from the house.[37] Much like the previous year, the feeds were available for free on the official website, and were blocked solely for competitions and various production aspects.[38]

House

In October 2013, it was confirmed that the house used for the series would be moving to a new location at Showline Studios in Toronto.[39][40] In February, photos of the new house were released weekly on Fridays, with the photos being teasers of the house under construction.[41] Entertainment Tonight Canada gave a tour of the new house on February 24, 2014.[42] House designer Peter Faragher, who also worked on the first season, said that he was inspired by "a modern home at Dufferin St. and St. Clair Ave."[43] The house featured a total of 85 cameras.[43] Much like last year, the house featured a large staircase that led to the living room, which featured a lime green wrap-around couch.[44] The bedroom this season, located upstairs, featured white and red colors; much like last year, there is only one bedroom.[45] There is also a Head of Household bedroom in the house,[46] which features double doors at its entrance.[47] This room features various shades of blue, and chandeliers hanging from the ceiling.[48] The have-not room this year features a black and white scheme room with everything cut in half. The ceiling height was also cut in half. The kitchen features a similar color scheme, and is inspired by the sci-fi series Star Trek (1996-2005).[49] The house features a backyard, as well as a hot tub and swimming pool for the HouseGuests to use.[50] The house was a total of 18,000 square feet, an increase from the 16,500 square feet that made up the previous house.[43] The Diary Room featured a round brown chair, with various colored dots composing the wall behind it.[51] Former HouseGuest Gary Levy called the house "scary", while Peter Brown felt it was "intimidating." The house also featured a secret room, referred to as the "War Room" that was used for a twist in the game.[52] The house also saw the return of Marsha the Moose, who had been used in the previous season to give tasks to the HouseGuests.[53]

Format

Big Brother is a game show in which a group of contestants, referred to as HouseGuests, live in isolation from the outside world in a custom built "house", constantly under video surveillance.[54] The HouseGuests are competing for a $100,000 grand prize.[55][56] In addition, the winner will receive a $10,000 trip to any where in the world courtesy of Twistos, as well as a $25,000 home makeover from The Brick.[57] The runner-up will receive a $20,000 cash prize.[58] The format of the series is mainly seen as a social experiment, and requires HouseGuests to interact with others who may have differing ideals, beliefs, and prejudices.[59][60] HouseGuests are also required to make visits to the Diary Room during their stay in the house, where they are able to share their thoughts and feelings on their fellow HouseGuests and the game.[61] While in the house, the HouseGuests are given no information from the outside world.[62] This includes the families and loved ones of the HouseGuests, whom they are not permitted to see or speak to.[63] The house features no telephones, computers, televisions, or reading material other than for religious use.[64] HouseGuests can voluntarily leave the house at any time, however, will not be able to return.[65][66] In addition, a HouseGuest can be removed from the house at any time for breaking the rules.[67][68] Each week in the house, the HouseGuests will participate in various competitions to win food, luxuries, and power.[64] The HouseGuests can also be given tasks to complete in exchange for a reward, with tasks being given to HouseGuests through means of a telephone (season 1) or various props in the house.[69]

At the start of each week in the house, the HouseGuests will compete for the title of Head of Household.[70] The Head of Household for each week will have luxuries such as their own personal bedroom and free laundry service, but is responsible for nominating two HouseGuests for eviction. The Head of Household will not be able to compete in the following week's Head of Household competition, meaning that a HouseGuest could not hold the title for two weeks in a row.[71][72] The winner of the Power of Veto can choose to save one of the nominated HouseGuests, forcing the Head of Household to nominate someone in their place.[72][73] All HouseGuests excluding the Head of Household and nominees later vote to determine which of the two nominees should be evicted, and the nominated HouseGuest who received the most votes is evicted during a live episode.[72] If there is a tie in the voting, the reigning Head of Household is required to make the tie-breaker decision.[74] Unlike other versions of Big Brother, the HouseGuests may discuss the nomination and eviction process openly and freely.[72] The HouseGuests also compete in Have-Not competitions, in which the losers are required to solely eat slop for the rest of the week, as well as sleep in a special bedroom.[75] The HouseGuests also participate in weekly luxury competitions, in which those competing can win prizes. When only two HouseGuests remain, the last seven evicted HouseGuests (six in season two, with Canada being the seventh juror [76]), the jury, will return to decide which of the two should win the game.[77]

Summary

On Day 1, the original fourteen HouseGuests entered the house in 3 groups. The first group to enter made the "first 5" alliance.[78] Following this, the HouseGuests competed in the "Ice Breaker" endurance Head of Household competition.[25] For this competition, HouseGuests stood on blocks of ice and attempted to be the last HouseGuest remaining on their block.[79] At one point in the competition, the HouseGuests learned that the next three to drop would get to open a cooler.[80] Heather won a $1,000 prize in her cooler, while Ika was required to wear her bathing suit for two days. The last cooler went unopened.[25] Towards the end of the competition, Paul made a deal to keep all of the HouseGuests still in the game safe and claimed he would target those who had already dropped out of the competition.[81] The remaining HouseGuests agreed and subsequently dropped out, making Paul the first Head of Household.[79] During the nomination ceremony, Paul chose to nominate Andrew and Anick for eviction, honoring his agreement and nominating two people who fell out prior to his deal.[82][83] Sabrina, Adel and Kyle were later selected to compete in the Superhero themed Power of Veto competition, in which those competing maneuvered their way through various obstacles in an attempt to be the first to finish.[84] Andrew was the winner of the Power of Veto.[82][85] Andrew later chose to use the Power of Veto to remove himself from the block, with Ika being nominated in his place.[86] On Day 8, Anick became the first HouseGuest to be evicted from the house in a unanimous vote of eleven to zero.[87][88][89]

Following Anick's eviction, potential HouseGuests Allison, Nate, and Scott entered the War Room where they would remain for a week while the public determined which of them would become an official HouseGuest.[90][91] The remaining thirteen official HouseGuests were unaware that these three were hidden inside the house.[92] That night, Andrew became the new Head of Household after winning the farmhouse themed Head of Household competition.[93] Later in the week, Andrew nominated Paul and Neda to be up for eviction with Paul being his target. Along with the two nominees and the head of household, Kenny, Sarah and Sabrina were chosen to compete in a Power of Veto competition sponsored by the upcoming movie, Divergent. Kenny was deemed the winner and decided to use his power to save Neda. Andrew nominated Kyle the replacement nominee and was evicted by a 9-1 vote on Day 15 with Adel being the sole vote for Paul.[94]

Following Kyle's eviction, the houseguest play "Rumour Has It" for HoH, in which Arisa would ask the houseguest if a particular detail of a previous competition was true or just a rumour . Ika won and be came the 3rd HoH of the season. After living a full week in the war room, Allison was named the final houseguest to enter the Big Brother House and was given immunity for a week.[94] However, before entering the house, Allison was given 2 rules in which she cannot mention about the war room and cannot mention that she was spying on the houseguest via the televisions in the war room. Ika later nominated Heather and Paul as the nominees for the week. On Day 18, Big Brother gave the houseguest a task called 'Who is the Buzz-worthiest houseguest?" in which the houseguest compete to be the most talked about houseguest in Canada. Adel was deemed the winner of the task and was given news about the outside world. In addition, he also received a special power in which he can compete in a POV competition of his choice. The HoH, nominees and Neda, Arlie and Andrew played in the "Nutcracker" POV competition. Heather injured herself and was briefly taken out of the house to get it checked out by the medical team. Ika won and decided not to use the power of veto thus unchanging the nominations. Later in the week, Paul became the 3rd houseguest to be evicted from the Big Brother House in a vote of 6-4 with First-5 member Sarah being the swing vote to fail Ika's plan to evict Heather.

Following Paul's eviction, the houseguests immediately went to the backyard to compete in the next Head of Household competition. The houseguests (excluding Ika) competed in the "Hang in there" endurance competition where the houseguests were required to keep their hands on a podium while a rope around their waist pulled them backwards.In the end, Rachelle won the HoH and nominated Heather and Allison for eviction. Later that week, Allison won the Power of Veto competition. At the Veto Ceremony, Allison used the POV to take herself off the block. Rachelle then nominated Ika in her place, putting a plan in motion to backdoor her former ally . After hundreds of colored balls dropped from the ceiling of the backyard, the house guests then tried to count the balls or try to figure out what it means by reading the clues inside the balls. Ika won the price by guessing the number of balls correctly. Alone in the backyard, she was given a choice of either shredding a $5000 cheque written to her by Big Brother or shredding letters from home of the rest of the house guests. During her decision, Ika was unaware that the other house guests were able to listen and watch her via the living room televisions. In the end, Ika decided to take the $5000 and to shred the other houseguests letters; as she knew that she would be evicted anyway, she wanted to leave with some financial gain. On eviction night, Ika was evicted by a vote of 8-1 with the sole vote to evict Heather being Adel's.

Following Ika's eviction, the houseguests went to the backyard expecting a Head of Household competition ,but to their surprise the backyard was empty. They were informed that the Canadian Public would be Week 5's Head of Household where the viewers would vote for two people to be nominated via their website. Unlike the usual nomination ceremony, all the house guests gathered in the living room to hear the results from the host, Arisa Cox. After announcing a couple of people who were safe, she revealed that Andrew was the first nominee. After calling out the rest of the safe house guests, it was revealed that the Canadian public voted for Sabrina to be the second nominee. Later in that week, Jon received the Power of Veto. He did not use it, thus keeping Andrew and Sabrina on the block. Not wanting to campaign against his ally, Andrew decided to spend his last days with his showmance Allison. However, Allison wanting Andrew to stay, pitched forth the idea that Jon could flip and keep Andrew in the house. Andrew listened to Allison's advice and had a talk with Jon, asking Jon if he would vote to keep him. Soon after, Jon went to Sabrina and told her she was not as safe as she thought she was. Days later, Andrew was evicted from the house with a vote of 7-2.

Following Andrew's eviction, Heather won the "Blindside" HOH memory competition. For the competition, Arisa asked the houseguests questions on photos that they had seen in the past week and if the houeseguest who buzzed in first had answered correctly, they could choose to knock someone out of the competition. During nominations, Heather put Kenny and Allison up for eviction. Allison began to realize she could be in danger for the upcoming weeks, so in order to grow closer to the other side of the house, revealed the "First Five" alliance to them. Later in that week, Kenny went on to win the Power of Veto. Using the Power of Veto on himself, Heather was forced to pick a replacement nominee. With the knowledge of the "First Five" alliance, Heather decided to nominate Kenny's closest ally, Sarah, for eviction. With the power meter at 6,000,000 a new twist is upon the house: The Secret Power of Veto. Hidden among the house for anyone to find. Allison got to it first and now has its power. Not using it at the veto ceremony, she still remains with the veto. During the days between the POV ceremony and the eviction night, Kenny came out to the rest of the house telling them that he is gay. Also during the nights, Neda would sneak downstairs and pour out the condiments that the Have-Nots could use to make the slop taste better. With the house clearly split in two, the "other side" formed an alliance of six, including Allison, Neda, Jon, Arlie, Adel and Heather. They decided on calling themselves "The Sloppy Seconds". On eviction night, it was 4-3 vote to evict Sarah and she was evicted. The house guests were then informed that it was a double eviction night. They quickly piled into the backyard for the HoH competition. The competition required the house guests to buzz in "more" or "less" as their answer in reply to one of Arisa's questions. If they were right the person they were against would be knocked out. It came down to Neda and Arlie, neither of which really wanted the power, especially on double eviction night. Arlie then purposely buzzed in incorrectly so that Neda would be HoH. Neda then chose to nominate Sabrina and Rachelle for eviction, with the plan to backdoor Kenny. Adel, Arlie and Heather were picked to be the other veto players. Arlie won the Power of Veto and decided to take Rachelle off the block. Neda then renominated Kenny in her place, and by a vote of 5-1, Kenny was evicted from the house.

Following Sarah and Kenny's eviction, the houseguests competed in the "How We Roll" HoH competition. To win this competition, the houseguests had to roll six metallic balls into six holes on a large game board, while keeping all the balls balanced. Jon ended up winning, and nominated Rachelle and Sabrina for eviction. While picking players for the power of veto competition, Adel used his power to remove Allison from the veto competition, which made Allison quite angry. After the veto competition, it was revealed that Jon came out victorious. After talking to some allies, Jon decided to put a backdoor plan in motion, so Rachelle and Sabrina could be saved. But Jon and his alliance could not decide whether or not they would backdoor Arlie or Allison. Jon made up his mind and at the Veto Ceremony, he took Rachelle off the block and nominated Arlie in her place. Allison used her secret power of veto to take Sabrina off the block, so Jon nominated Adel in her place. Once again the Power Meter came into play with it reaching 20,000,000 meaning one houseguest will have a secret 1 on 2 strategy session with season one showmance Emmett Blois and Jillian Maclaughlin. On day 50, Arlie was evicted from the house by a vote of 5-0.

Following Arlie's eviction, the houseguests competed in the next HOH competition. With the competition being true and false themed, it came down to Allison and Neda competing in the first tie-breaker of the season. Neda took a chance by guessing a lower number than Allison did and won the HoH. However, immediately following the competition, Neda was called in to the diary room where she was blindfolded and taken to the war room, where Allison, Scott and Nate had stayed and where Allison got her secret veto. As Neda waited in the war room, the other houseguests began to wonder where she was without knowing that Neda was watching them on the Tv screens in the war room. After watching her fellow houeseguests for a couple hours, Arisa appeared on the TV screens and then told Neda that she had to nominate two people for eviction immediately, because it was an instant eviction. Neda immediately ruled out nominating Jon, Adel and Heather and then had to choose between Rachelle, Sabrina and Allison. After debating it for a few minutes, she decided on nominating Allison and Sabrina for eviction. Neda was then taken back in to the house where she told everyone that it was an instant eviction, and that she was nominating Allison and Sabrina for eviction. Neda was then given a chance to make a short speech of why she was nominating Allison and Sabrina, and during her speech she made it clear to the house her target was Allison and that Allison could not be trusted. Minutes later, Allison was evicted from the house by a vote of 4-0.

Following Allison's eviction, the houseguests competed in the next HOH competition called "The Eyes Have It". This competition required the houseguests to solve a riddle about another fellow houseguest. Once they solved the riddle, they would have to go look for the puzzle piece with the correct houseguest's eyes on it. Taking the puzzle piece, the houseguest had to put together a puzzle on a ladder. Once the ladder puzzle was solved, a metal ball would drop through the segments behind the puzzle pieces. If the metal ball fell all the way through to the bottom of the ladder, the puzzle would be complete and the first to do this would win the HoH for the week. During the competition, Adel admitted he was not good at riddles and so he guessed his way through the competition. However, in the end Adel was deemed the winner and later nominated Rachelle and Sabrina for eviction, with Rachelle being his target. After Neda won the veto, another puzzle competition, she was once again called to the diary room by Big Brother. In the diary room, she discovered a note telling her to step out of the diary room and the secret war room will be revealed to her. Neda then followed the instructions and she quickly stepped into the secret room as the door opened. Neda then met Emmett and Jillian, from Season 1, so they could have a secret strategy session. During the veto ceremony, Neda decided not to use the power of veto, therefore sealing the Gremlins' fate. Knowing that her closest ally would be evicted that week, Sabrina went to Neda and Jon begging for a final three deal. Jon and Neda seriously considered taking Sabrina to the final three with them, and in the end they agreed to the deal. Jon and Neda then considered throwing the next HoH to Sabrina since they both knew her hatred for Adel and that Sabrina could possibly get Adel out. On Day 57, Rachelle was evicted by a unanimous vote of 3-0.

Following Rachelle's eviction, Jon was crowned the new HOH and decided to go after Heather, as he thought she didn't benefit his game at all. So at the nomination ceremony, Jon nominated Heather and Sabrina for eviction. At the late night veto competition, houseguests had to go in to a chamber that blows many cards around. Houseguests had to grab the cards that would end up spelling out 'Grab The Power Of Veto'. But there were also Twistos bags hanging on the top of the ceiling in the chamber. Since it was a timed competition, houseguests could either take time to get the money or go for the veto. At the end of the competition, the houseguests learned that only the person who had the best time and collected the most money would get to keep their money. Neda won her $3000 dollars, while everyone else was left with no money at all. The person with the fastest time was Heather, so she won the Power of Veto. After the veto competition, the houseguests were called to the living room one by one. They were given an option to give up something to see a loved one. All of the houseguests accepted and got to see their loved ones for two minutes in The War Room. Therefore exposing the War Room to the entire house. The houseguests punishments were that Adel had to stay awake for 36 hours straight, Sabrina had to be on slop for the week. Heather gave up access to the HOH room, Neda gave up all of her personal belongings and Jon had to stay in the HOH room for 24 hours in solitary confinement. At the veto ceremony, Heather used the veto on herself and Adel was her replacement.

  • ^Note 1 :   On Day 8, potential HouseGuests Allison, Nate, and Scott moved in to the War Room where they secretly watched the house for one week. During this week, Canada voted for one of them to enter the game following Week 2's eviction. Allison received the most votes and entered the house on Day 15.
  • ^Note 2 :   Allison entered the house shortly after Week 3's Head of Household competition. As a new HouseGuest she had immunity from this week's eviction. She was not eligible to compete for the Power of Veto.
  • ^Note 3 :   Following Ika's eviction, Canada was named Head of Household, with nominations being decided by viewer votes. Andrew and Sabrina received the most votes and were nominated for eviction.
  • ^Note 4 : Week 6 was a double eviction week. Following Sarah's eviction, the remaining HouseGuests played a week's worth of game – including HoH and Veto competitions, and Nomination, Veto, and Eviction ceremonies – during the remainder of the live show, culminating in a second eviction for the week.
  • ^Note 5 : On Day 39, Allison acquired the Secret Power of Veto by solving a set of riddles. This Secret Veto has the ability to be used after the regular Power of Veto and can only be used during the next three eviction cycles.
  • ^Note 6 :   On Day 47, Allison used her Secret Power of Veto to remove Sabrina from the block. Following this, Jon nominated Adel in her place.
  • ^Note 7 :   Jon could not have nominated Rachelle because the Power of Veto was already used on her for this week.
  • ^Note 8 : During Week 8 there was an instant eviction. Immediately after Neda's nominations, the HouseGuests were instructed to cast their votes to evict. No Power of Veto competition was held.
