The IRT Perundurai Medical College is a Government[2] college that is affiliated to The Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R Medical University,Chennai. The school includes a medical college, a hospital, and a research institute. The school falls under the auspices of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation. In 2004, doctors' quarters were added.
History
Lord Willington(then Viceroy of India) in 1930 suggested formation of a district committee to combat tuberculosis.A committee was formed in Coimbatore and the decision to start a tuerculosis sanatorium was made in jan 18 1933.An elevated plateau of 350 acres with dry climate was selected in Perundurai for the sanatorium.The foundation stone was laid by the then Governor of Madras Province His Excellency Sir K.V.Reddy Naidu on July 1, 1936.The sanatorium was declared open by declared open by Sri.C.Rajagopalachari.On September 29, 1952 the sanatorium was renamed Ramalingam Tuberculosis Sanatorium in honour of Thiru.T.A.Ramalingam Chettiar, Member of Union Parliament.On 18.11.86 the government of Tamil Nadu took over the sanatorium for the construction of a medical college.The college started functioning from 1992 admitting 60 students per year.The college has 600 beds.A school of nursing was started in 2008.
