WIXX (101.1 FM) is a Top 40 (CHR) formatted radio station licensed to Green Bay, Wisconsin, that serves the Green Bay and Appleton-Oshkosh areas. WIXX's main competition is WKSZ. WIXX also broadcasts Green Bay Packers football games through the Packers Radio Network.

WIXX is owned and operated by Wausau, Wisconsin-based Midwest Communications, which owns six other radio stations in Northeast Wisconsin. The station's studios are located on Bellevue St. in the Green Bay suburb of Bellevue.

WIXX's transmitter is located in the town of Ledgeview, on Scray's Hill, at a shared site with WBAY-TV, WPNE-TV, and WPNE. WIXX was named the 2007 Station of the Year in the CHR/Top 40 category for market size 101 at the national Radio & Records convention.[1]

Midwest Communications also voicetracks several WIXX personalities on WTBX-FM in Hibbing, Minnesota, KDWZ in Duluth, Minnesota, WRQE in Appleton, Wisconsin and WXER Sheboygan, Wisconsin. WTBX and WXER are on Hot AC formats, KDWZ is Top 40 (CHR) like WIXX, and WRQE is a mainstream rock station.

History

The station, with the original call letters WJPG-FM, was owned by the Green Bay Press-Gazette to compliment their then-owned station WJPG-AM (now WNFL), though there is no record of the Press-Gazette ever broadcasting on this station, they eventually decided to sell the station to the Norbertine Fathers, who had more money and were also interested in complimenting their stations WBAY AM at 1360 and WBAY-TV on Channel 2. When the order sold its broadcast holdings, the radio stations were sold to what would become Midwest Communications and the current call letters were adopted. The FM station, which had broadcast easy listening music in the 1960s before becoming an album-oriented rock station, was switched to automated Top 40 in 1977, but later switched back to live announcers. The station's current linup includes "Murphy in the Morning" [Murphy, Katie & Nick] (5AM-9AM), Otis Day (9AM-1PM), Corey Carter (1PM-2PM), Jake Kelly (2PM-6PM), Lil Shane (6PM-11PM) and Susan Kennedy (11PM-5AM), along with several fill-ins on weekends.

WIXX's former studios in the WBAY Building.

For many years WIXX's studios remained in the WBAY Building in downtown Green Bay along with WTAQ, despite break-up of common ownership between the TV and radio stations decades ago. In 2008 the station, along with their six sister stations, moved into a new facility located adjacent to the WNFL transmitter facility.

WIXX is unique in the fact that it consistently has been rated within the top three radio stations (many times number one) in both Green Bay and Appleton throughout the 1990s and 2000s, according to Arbitron. For a long time the station identification began with One of America's great radio stations, and is nicknamed as "The Big One" (in reference of its large coverage area) within the radio industry. The station's strong signal frequently can be received as far north as the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and as far south as Milwaukee. It is not uncommon for WIXX to show up in Arbitron ratings in some distant radio markets.

WIXX is one of 118 radio stations monitored by Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems as part of the R&R Top 40/CHR panel. Unlike most other Top 40 stations, WIXX has a modern rock component to the music mix.

WIXX's Weather updates are provided by the FOX 11 Severe Weather Lab at WLUK-TV.
