Jung Eun-ji (Korean: 정은지; born Jung Hye-rim on August 18, 1993), is a South Korean idol singer/dancer and actress. She is the main vocalist and dancer of girl group A Pink under A Cube Entertainment. She also gained popularity for her acting in the hit TV series Reply 1997.[1]
Early life
Jung Eun-ji was born as Jung Hyerim[2] in Haeundae, Busan,[3] on August 18, 1993.[4] She has a younger brother named Jung Min-ki.[5]
She attended Hapdo Kindergarten, Shinjae Elementary School, Jaesong Girls' Middle School and later Hyehwa Girls' High School.[6] In 2004, Jung won the first place prize in the program Excited Day Enjoyable Day (Korean: 신나는 날 즐거운 날) hosted by the KBS network.[7]
Jung originally aspired to become a detective or a vocal coach.[8][9] But after she passed the audition to be A Pink's main vocalist, she decided to pursue a career as an idol singer.
Because she grew up in Busan, Jung speaks with a Busan dialect, which she says has helped rather than hindered her acting.[10][11]
Career
Pre-debut
In November 2010, Jung passed the auditions to become a member of A Pink, specifically as the group's main vocalist.[12] She was revealed to the public as A Pink's 4th and last member on March 10, 2011, through the social media platform Twitter. In the introduction video, Jung sang her rendition of Jennifer Hudson's "Love You I Do".[13] She had not received any professional training prior to joining A Pink, and had trained for only 6 months with the group.[12]
A Pink
A Pink debuted on April 21, 2011, with "Mollayo" (Korean: 몰라요; lit. "I Don't Know") from their debut EP Seven Springs of A Pink. So far, the group has released four Korean EPs and one studio album.
Acting
Jung made her acting debut in Reply 1997, a 1990s nostalgia television drama which became one of the highest-rated Korean series on cable television. She played the role of Sung Shi-won, the female protagonist.[14] Jung was complimented by critics and audiences for her comedic and emotional acting, which was impressive for a newcomer, as well as for her authentic Busan dialect.[15][16] Jung said her perky character shared some similarities to her own personality and Busan background, which helped her act naturally.[11][17] The role won her several awards, including the 2013 Baeksang Arts Award for Best New TV Actress.[18]
Jung then made her musical theatre debut in the 2012 staging of the Hollywood film-turned-musical Legally Blonde, playing the lead role of Elle Woods.[19] The show ran from November 16, 2012 to March 17, 2013.[20][21]
Jung was then cast in a supporting role in the 2013 melodrama That Winter, The Wind Blows.[22] It was her first appearance in a drama aired on one of South Korea's three major networks, for which she won Best Performance at the APAN Star Awards and New Star Award at the SBS Drama Awards.[23][22]
Jung then reprised her Reply 1997 role in a cameo appearance on Reply 1994 (both series shared the same writer and director).[24]
In 2014, she starred in another musical, the stage adaptation of 2004 series Full House.[25] Afterwards, Jung was cast in the leading role in romantic comedy series Trot Lovers, playing a talented singer obsessed with the old-fashioned musical genre trot.[26]
Musical collaborations
For the project A Cube for Season #Green, Jung and fellow Cube artist Yang Yo-seob of Beast sang the duet track "Love Day."[27] The music video was released on March 12, 2012 to coincide with White Day.[28]
In August 2012, Jung recorded two promotional singles, "All For You" and "Our Love Like This" with Reply 1997 co-star Seo In-guk for the drama's soundtrack.[29][30] followed by a live performance on M! Countdown and a win on Music Triangle. The song also won numerous awards, including Best OST at the Mnet Asian Music Awards and the Melon Music Awards.
To commemorate the success of their respective groups, Jung, along with bandmate Namjoo, and Hyunseung of Beast, released the single "One Year Ago" for A Cube For Season #White.[31]
On May 31, 2013, Jung and fellow Cube artist Huh Gak released the song "Short Hair" for A Cube For Season #Blue.[32]
