The Benjamin Britten High School is a High School located in the northern outskirts of Lowestoft, Suffolk, England. It caters for approximately 1200 students aged 11 to 16. It is also home to a sports training centre open to the public. The Headteacher is Andrew Hine.

The school was completed in 1979 and was expected to last for 30 years. Several attempts to replace the buildings have failed in recent years, although the site was expected to be subject to a major redevelopment due to the "Building Schools For The Future" scheme. In 2008 the school was designated by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) as a specialist school in Maths and Computing.[1]

In September 2011 the school became an 11 to 16 school as part of the reorganisation of schools in Lowestoft by Suffolk County Council. Pupils in years 7 and 8 joined the school after the closure of eight middle schools in Lowestoft. The opening of Lowestoft Sixth Form College also meant that the school lost its role in the Lowestoft 6th consortium, which had operated as a shared sixth form between the high schools in the town.

BBHS Eco Group

The BBHS Eco Group is a student led team of creative and dedicated individuals who share the common goal of promoting an ecologically sustainable society. With assistance from Mr Champion of BBHS, they are undertaking several interesting projects designed to raise awareness of ecological issues and to demonstrate applications of “Eco Technology”, such as solar panels.

The Eco Group began with a campaign to raise money to fit solar panels onto our schools roof through the Solar Schools project. Although they raised over £2000, this proved insufficient to cover the costs of such a large scale refit. However, after a deal with the local council, the school has recently obtained solar panels on the roof, which serves to signify our dedication towards everything eco.

Despite this small setback, the team has remained active. They have visited sites such as the Viridor Waste Recycling Plant and the Eco Tech Center in Swaffam, and have pursued projects such as large scale improvements to the school grounds, building a dedicated garden area to house our works, and hosting a cloud storage server from a solar powered Raspberry Pi. You can check up on the state of these projects and many more at this website.
