He is also a cultural icon in India. He is sometimes referred to as the grand old 'Babuji' of India owing to his numerous fatherly roles that emphasize on traditional Indian values. The reality however, is that he is a much more versatile actor.

Career

Aloknath has a doctorate in doing kanayadans. He like to play the role of babuji in any movie or television show. He first rose to fame for his role in the 1987 television series, Buniyaad. He went on to essay the role of Babuji in the television serial Tara. He later appeared in the 1989 film, Maine Pyar Kiya, playing the father of Bhagyashree Patwardhan's character, Suman. He has appeared in some of the biggest hits of Bollywood, playing supporting roles as a father or uncle who is shown as good-natured person. Prime examples are Taal, Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United, Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, Pardes and Vivah. He even played fathers to people older than himself, from in his twenties.[2] He played negative roles in films like Bol Radha Bol, Vinashak – Destroyer and Shadyantra. He also made an appearance in the international award-winning Richard Attenborough directed film Gandhi (1982).

Nath's film Vivah was very successful at the box office mainly because of its close relation to his own life[3] and his performance as a doting uncle was praised by critics.[4]

He appeared in some episodes of Rishtey as Babuji, a TV series that aired on Zee TV during 1999-2001.

He appeared in the Star Plus serial Sapna Babul Ka...Bidaai which had been running since late 2007. He has worked in Yahan Main Ghar Ghar Kheli.[5] He also worked in Do Dil Bandhe Ek Dori Se.
