Orphaned non-free image File:Gosport and Fareham IRS.gif
Thanks for uploading File:Gosport and Fareham IRS.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 15:05, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
The article Ryde Lifeboat Station has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- local organization with no demonstrated notability
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. DGG ( talk ) 01:34, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
Orphaned non-free media (File:Gosport and Fareham IRS.gif)
Thanks for uploading File:Gosport and Fareham IRS.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Werieth (talk) 15:55, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
DYK for Littlehampton Lifeboat Station
On 21 April 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Littlehampton Lifeboat Station, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that there are no Arun-class lifeboats at the Littlehampton Lifeboat Station, which is near the River Arun? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Littlehampton Lifeboat Station. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

Hi Cheeseladder, thanks for your work on listing the User:Cheeseladder/Civil War volunteers.
As to the Fred Copeman image, then Stefan is absolutely correct on copyright and WP:NFC policy here. As such, he thus has the right to behave however he wishes about it. You might not like this, a better editor might drop you a line explaining their actions, but you have zero redress. There are even one or two NFC-busy admins who will probably threaten blocks against you for arguing, because they enjoy that. Also you had the temerity to start writing an article, and don't you know how much extra paperwork all these articles create for the WikiBureaucracy?!
Personally, like adding categories, I embed such images but use a leading colon [[:File:Fredcopeman.jpg]]
, e.g. File:Fredcopeman.jpg This gives me a placeholder that I can easily convert later, but it avoids the "you can't do that in userspace" chorus. This works better than commenting out the image or removing it, but remember that Stefan is entitled to revert your wikicrimes, he's not required to make a useful edit instead.
A further problem on the horizon is WP:NFLISTS. It is inadvisable to provide a non-free image for each entry in such an article or section. (I suggest that you read the whole section carefully, as you're going to be tested on it later) There are a NFC-active few editors who obsess over this and choose to interpret it as "NFC images are forbidden in list articles". This is of course untrue and not at all what policy says, but you have a hard case to go against their self-belief. Dear old Betacommand was a right one for this, but fortunately he's banned now and so there's no chance at all that he has returned as the most active sock on the NFC boards.
If you are confused by all this (and who wouldn't be), then I'd suggest approaching Masem who is active in NFC, but pretty decent and even-handed in interpreting the actual rules, not making stuff up to fit an agenda. Andy Dingley (talk) 09:01, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Andy
- Thank you for your words of wisdom. I would have no problem with the removal of NFC image that I had included in the list, and would not have minded it being removed from my sandbox following some dialog with the objector. What I object to is the complete absence of good faith which Stefan2 has shown me. He should be the one threatened with a block for his behaviour. He should be reminded that an article being prepared in a sandbox is a draught and may not actually be created as an article. I will in future check the licence of any image I include as I have no wish to get involved in a dispute with people like Stefan2.Cheeseladder (talk) 09:53, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
Sortable wiki tables
Just a suggestion, it's possible to make a sortable wikitable column that sorts on a different order (i.e. surname) than what's visible.
Name | Other stuff |
---|---|
John Alexander | |
Charles Armitage | |
Albert Charlesworth | |
James Cockburn | |
Fred Copeman | |
Stafford Cottman |

Stefen2 glib reply
- See WP:USER#Non-free images: "Non-free images found on a user page (including user talk pages) will be removed (preferably by replacing it with a link to the image) without warning and, if not used in a Wikipedia article will be deleted entirely." --Stefan2 (talk) 10:31, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
