The Signal is a 2014 American science fiction thriller film directed by William Eubank and co-written with Carlyle Eubank, David Frigerio and Sebastian Gutierrez. The film stars Laurence Fishburne, Brenton Thwaites, Olivia Cooke and Lin Shaye. The film premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and will be released theatrically in the United States on June 13, 2014.[1]

Plot

Nick and Jonah are MIT freshmen with a passion for hacking. While driving cross-country through Nevada with Nick’s girlfriend, Haley, they follow rival hacker Nomad’s clues to a location 180 miles away. After a terrifying confrontation with Nomad in the middle of the desert, the trio regain consciousness in captivity. Struggling to comprehend the true nature of their confinement, they discover they are part of a plot much larger than themselves. Then they all die in a car crash. Then the screen fades to black. Production

Laurence Fishburne joined the cast of the sci-fi thriller film The Signal on May 9, 2013.[2]

Filming

The shooting of the film began in May 2013 in New Mexico, filming locations include Albuquerque, Los Lunas and Taos.[3] The New Mexico Film Office also announced the start of filming.[4] On 18 and 19 June crews were filming the scenes on Rio Grande Gorge Bridge.[5]

Music

The musical score for The Signal was composed by Nima Fakhrara.[6] A soundtrack album was released by Varèse Sarabande on June 10, 2014.[7]

On March 18, 2014, a teaser poster and some photos from the film were released,[9] followed by the first official trailer next day.[10] On March 26, 2014, Focus revealed a new poster for the film.[11] On May 27, "ruagitated.com" was launched.[12]

Theatrical release

Focus Features has set the film for a June 13, 2014 worldwide release.[1]

Reception

The film has earned mixed reviews from critics. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reports that 50% of 24 film critics have given the film a positive review, with a rating average of 5.6 out of 10.[13]
