Refiloe Maele Phoolo (born 16 December 1990 in the village of Montshiwa in Mafikeng), also known as Cassper Nyovest, is a South African recording artist and record producer.[1]

In 2004 he was a member of a group called Childhood Gangsters (CHG), which disbanded. He joined an eight-member group, Slow Motion, which included Ganja Beatz.

Nyovest dropped out of high school in 2006, left home and moved to Johannesburg. The following year, at the age of 17, he was signed by the Motswako label Impact Sound. After two years without a release, he left to start a label of his own to no avail; he moved back home.

He recorded "Holler at a Pantsula", which samples Just the Two of Us by Bill Withers. The video was released on YouTube.[2] Labels and artists took notice of Cassper, among them the Motswako rapper Hip Hop Pantsula, who featured Nyovest on "Wamo Tseba Mtho" on his album Dumela.

In 2013 Nyovest released "Gusheshe", the first official single from his upcoming debut album, Tsholofelo.[3] The single was well received and playlisted across various radio stations in South Africa.[4] It was accompanied by a music video[5] which premiered on Vuzu’s V-Entertainment.[6]

Early life

Nyovest grew up in Montshiwa in Mafikeng, the capital city of the North West province. He attended high school at Sol Plaatje Secondary School.[7] In school, he was athletic as he partook in various sports activities including soccer, cricket and basketball.[8] He started rapping when he was in grade 5, at age 13.

In grade 10, Nyovest failed his exams, and moved to his grandmother's house in Potchefstroom. Then the following year, at age 16, he dropped out of high school: "I told my parents that I'd rather chase my dream, which I believe is going to work out, rather than keeping it safe and regret it my whole life."[9]

He relocated to Johannesburg the next year to pursue his career in music.

Controversy

Nyovest and Vth Season artist, AKA were involved in a dispute on Twitter.[10]
