Notability

Is it realy that sucsesfull, or is it just a load of POV by his fans and fanfic club.--82.11.90.119 (talk) 01:32, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

His Facebook even claimes he has no pubic hair or kids, mad or what!--82.11.90.119 (talk) 01:35, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree.--213.81.117.75 (talk) 02:05, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why?--Its snowing in East Asia (talk) 09:16, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

They've made a fictional biography and it's already outsold the ones written by Tony Blair and Katie Price [1]. 85.210.186.151 (talk) 19:53, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Categories

I may be being pedantic here but I don't think that Orlov can be described as a "fictional Russian person" despite being included in Category:Fictional Russian People. Either rename the category to Category:Fictional Russians (but that seems a bit extreme to accommodate a commercially inspired nonexistant meerkat), or (better) remove him. Also is it really worth having Category:Fictional Meerkats when the category contains just two articles? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.6.96.22 (talkcontribs) 10:32, 6 March 2011‎

Merge request

It's been a week. Is there any further input to suggest that we need two articles here? As already stated, the merge has already been completed from the other end (comparethemarket.com has been expanded to include everything from this article that would make it notable), so all that's needed is to re-redirect it. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 12:10, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've changed my mind over this. The article here contains significantly more information than the proposed merge target (at this time). A lot of it is worth us recording. Taking that information there would probably unduely weight the argument with material about this campaign. I'd suggest a slight refocus of this article to discuss the campaign rather than (as it currently does) cover a fictional biography. --Errant (chat!) 12:25, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It certainly contains more information, but all of it is fictional, and none of it has the slightest real-world impact (other than, tenuously, that various other members of Alexandr's "family" had toys produced of them for the campaign). We don't need a separate article simply to document what goes on in the adverts. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 12:51, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sure we can, to a limited extent! Certainly it is worth giving an overview of the campaigns to date & their content. --Errant (chat!) 13:07, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • two articles
comparethemarket.com is an insurance business. It meets any amount of commercial notability.
The meerkat advertising campaign, call it Aleksandr Orlov or Compare the Meerkat, whichever you prefer, is also a big topic with substantial notability. Yes, some ad campaigns, their slogans and their characters are notable and sourceable.
Crucially though, we can reasonably expect our readership to be entirely split as to which article they wish to read. Very few will want to read both (and for them we have links). This would be a bad merge. Andy Dingley (talk) 13:10, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The merge has already taken place, insofar as that the other article now contains anything notable about the characters that this article contains. This is really a discussion about a redirect. But nevertheless, you're certainly right about the target audience. I'll stick a {{copied}} up on this so as to ensure attribution doesn't get mess up if ever this gets AfDed, though. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 13:36, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This seems to warrant its own article on the basis of notability and not giving undue weight within comparethemarket.com. I expect students of marketing are already studying this campaign. -- Trevj (talk) 09:59, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Australian stuff

There should probably be something about the ad campaign's recent introduction to and success in Australia following its launch on 3 February 2013, although as most of the details are very similar it would probably only require a by-note. This isn't really my area but [2] [3] were written pre-launch. I'd love to find some hard figures to put behind it, but no idea where to look for them. Orderinchaos 11:45, 7 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I mentioned the ad campaign, in Australia, in the 'Commercial success' section of the article, on 16 August 2013. Figaro (talk) 09:59, 25 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Launch date and source

Does anyone have a source for the date these ads were launched? The best I can find is January 2009, but a day would be good. This is Paul (talk) 16:16, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
