I have heard the term 'babysitter' in regards to autism service dogs and have the need to write in response to what was written here under 'use with children'. I have two autistic sons myself, ages 9 and 10 and we do have an autism service dog named Maggie that we received 2 years ago. She is certified and helps me a great deal with my boys. I do use a tether with my youngest as he is a bolter but in disagreement with the article, he is never tethered ALONE with Maggie. There is a leash that goes around my sons waist and then clips to Maggie's vest. Then there is another leash also attached to Maggie's vest that I control. I have never seen a child tethered alone with an autism serviced dog and that is not what is taught in training. Maggie is also taught to trace my son's scent in case he ever wanders off which has happened once when he was younger and I did not have Maggie yet. That was the main reason I looked into service dogs to begin with. I believe anyone who wants to make comments about autism service dogs and their role with children should educate themselves with how the process works before making comments. Tone

The 'Adults with Autism' section uses an inappropriate tone and isn't referenced at all. Because I don't know enough about services for adults with autism, I don't feel comfortable re-writing it, but it needs to be changed. Thanks for flagging that up. I've removed most of that section, but left a basic outline there so hopefully someone with more knowledge can improve it and add some references. - Lawsonstu (talk) 14:15, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
