Wondering what happens when 'page' IS a namespace

Hi,

I've been looking to import some of the Modules from en.wikipedia to en.wikisource to try and keep pace with the 'latest and greatest' of improvements but I noticed a possible issue I figure I better ask about after studying recent changes (separate /configs in a sub-page) for more popular Modules.

Not that I'm an expert or anything but I see [for the first time?] a lot of stuff like... 

-- The value used if the module detects an undefined namespace.
cfg.otherDefault = 'page'

... peppered throughout these new /config holders and am kind of concerned it will screw something up over by us since we actually have a namespace designated as Page: (ns-104 [1]).

Ah. Yes, that will almost certainly screw something up. I take it you are talking about Module:Namespace detect, Module:Category handler, and Module:Pagetype? For Category handler and Pagetype you can just set the parameter to a value other than "page" - it will work as long as it is not a namespace name in lower case. For Namespace detect, you can do the same thing, but it will also require me removing the default argument name of "page". In that module you can specify new argument names, but there is also a default which is always available, and that default will cause bugs if it is also a namespace name. Ok, I've fixed Module:Namespace detect so that the default parameter name is "demopage", and "page" is an option used on this wiki. So for en.wikisource you can just comment that option out, or choose a different name. By the way, for cfg.otherDefault in Module:Pagetype, "page" will work fine as it is an output value and not a parameter name. — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 05:47, 5 April 2014 (UTC)
Well I was just thinking about the NS-detect Module alone until it dawned on me there are other Modules it can/should call upon (you have to realize; "we" are so not Lua-literate @ en.WS that it has reached the point where stuff is getting crippled from being left behind).

I just imported s:Module:Pagetype & Co. (can't think of a localized equivalent so I guess we never had it? -weird). Only 96 failures! I'll have to go through line by line and find "substitute" targets in the relevant namespaces I guess? Any help would be appreciated -- George Orwell III (talk) 05:47, 5 April 2014 (UTC)

You don't need to import the test cases - quite a few of those tests rely on certain pages being redirects, etc., so you're bound to get failures. That's pretty much the only way there is to test all of the features properly. I don't know of a way to make the test cases work automatically on other wikis, and seeing as the development is probably going to happen here, trying to localise the test cases seems like a waste of time. That said, if you do notice any bugs that aren't in the test cases on enwiki, leave me a message and I will add them to the test cases here if possible, or feel free to add them yourself if you're comfortable doing so. — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 05:56, 5 April 2014 (UTC)

Sorry, no can do - it has a few transclusions in MediaWiki space. I wrote an update in Module:Toolbar/sandbox a few days ago, by the way. Hmm, maybe I'm misremembering things. I had a quick search through Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Template editor user right, but I only saw objection to editing in MediaWiki space from Jc37. Personally, I think that template-protecting templates and modules that just happen to be used on a few MediaWiki namespace pages is ok, but that we should full-protect templates that are expressly for putting in MediaWiki messages, like Template:Protected page text. I'd want to ask others' advice before lowering the protection on anything transcluded in MediaWiki space, though. — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 16:19, 5 April 2014 (UTC)
Would it not make more sense to substitute templates on interface pages so that we don't have to shut out non-admins where it can be avoided? Anyway, the bar for getting template editor rights is quite high, so I'd be comfortable with your method of only protecting if the template is explicitly intended for use on interface pages. To become an administrator you need to make a request for adminship (RfA). Please see Wikipedia:Guide to requests for adminship for the details. You need a lot more editing experience on Wikipedia before you will be ready, though. Also, I imagine that many editors would oppose an RfA because of your English level. At Template_talk:Find_sources#Google_News_search_is_completely_useless you said "I've removed the Google News link. If we can find a way to make it return meaningful results in the future, we can add it back in." Actually, that existed before, and it is not really a direct replacement. It is useful, though, and deserves a link code in {{find sources multi}}, but I'd want to get a consensus before adding that link to the standard {{find sources}} template. Edit removal

Hi Mr. Stradivarius,

I like your username, as my both my parent-in-laws are violin makers from the school of Cremona, Italy, where Stradivarius is from.

Anyway, I am contacting you about the edits I made to the Teaching English as a Foreign Language pages that you have removed. I am also an English teacher, like yourself, but I live in Taiwan. The external link I am attaching to the page is a valuable resource of information about the TEFL industry, as well as the opportunities available. I understand the guidelines of external links in Wikipedia, and that you feel it is an inappropriate link for an encyclopedia. However, the people searching this pages are looking into the English teaching world and a link to an organization that provides an excellent and reliable service in helping people realize those dreams is hardly inappropriate to place on this page. I sincerely apologize if you still disagree, but I hope you understand my logic and reasoning for trying to help point people in the right direction, as I wish someone had done for me when I first became an ESL teacher.

Hi there, and thanks for the username compliment. :) About the link, the problem is that the site you linked is offering paid TEFL courses, and if Wikipedia links to them it implies that Wikipedia is endorsing the courses. However, Wikipedia is not an advertising service. This kind of link is routinely removed from articles, and that isn't likely to change in the near future, no matter how useful the link may be for new teachers. We accept links to commercial organisations if they are the subject of the article, but that isn't the case here, so I'm afraid that the link can't stay. Ok, I've had a look through your edits. First off, the good news - your content work looks excellent. I'm impressed with your work on getting Tom Hiddleston to GA, and also with your copy-editing skills. I certainly can't see anyone opposing an RfA on content creation grounds. Now the not-so-good news. Recent comments like this one are pretty much guaranteed to sink an RfA. You need to show that you can keep cool in disputes and that you can take the moral high ground, so I recommend that you work on that before you run. Also, people might oppose because you have a relatively low level of administrative work. I see good work at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Fairyspit, and you are on the right track with your work at AfD. It would be good to see you branch out into non-film-related AfD discussions, as if you are thinking of working at AfD in an administrative capacity, there are a lot of guidelines and precedents in other topic areas that you will need to be aware of. Also, I'm worried that you seem a little too eager to delete articles. That generally does not go down with commeters at RfA, so I recommend that you get into the habit of thinking whether an article could be merged or redirected somewhere else before nominating it. And also, I'd like to see you comment on more AfDs that other people have nominated, as that can often better show how you interpret the deletion guidelines. For film AfDs, you might find the following links helpful: Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Film and Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Actors and filmmakers. I also recommend just going through the daily AfD logs and commenting on random discussions to get experience in AfDs in other subject areas. To sum up: as you might have guessed by this point, I'm not willing to nominate you for an RfA just yet. However, you have the potential to be a great candidate, so I recommend that you work on your weaker areas and come back in a few months. I admit that that comment was probably not the best, but I tried to alleviate the situation by asking an author on flickr if they could change the license for use on Offerman's wikipedia page. You're welcome. :) What administrative work you want to do now really depends on what administrative work you would want to do as an administrator. I've said that you should take part in more AfDs as I'm assuming that you would want to work there in an administrative capacity. If you would want to do something else as an administrator, though, then it isn't so important. The main thing is that you know how to do the admin tasks that you want to do - you don't have to know how to do all the admin tasks just to become an administrator. (However, you do need a broad knowledge of Wikipedia policy.) So I think you should choose one or two admin tasks that you like, and do those. Module:ISO 639 name and Module:Language/text

@Lfdder: Ok, I've given the code a quick look-over. I'm not yet sure of all the ins and outs, but here are my initial impressions:
  • The code needs commenting. There are quite a few parts where I can understand the code mechanics but I'm not sure why you've chosen to do certain things. Comments really help to relate the purpose of the code, and the decisions you made as you implemented it. It's good to get into the habit of commenting all of your functions to say what they do, and any part of your code which might not be easily understandable to a casual observer.
  • Avoid giving the args table a global scope. Giving it a global scope means that you increase the area of code that needs to be considered at any one time to the entire module. Keeping the args table as a local variable to each function means that you can consider each function as an independent unit, which makes debugging easier. It also makes it possible to write unit tests for each of your functions, rather than for the whole module. Take a look at Module:Documentation/testcases for an example where I've written test cases for individual functions. It's pretty hard to find things to break in that module that won't be detected by the test cases.
  • Most modules use tabs for indentation now that CodeEditor has been switched to use them by default. It's probably best to switch to tabs now before the modules get widely deployed. I see that you have a mixture of tabs and spaces in some places - that's probably where you've added new code using CodeEditor since the indentation behaviour was altered.
  • You could make your modules easier to understand by assigning more things to local variables. For example, there's a part in Module:Language/text that goes like this:

This is hard to understand because you have a lot of statements in a small space, and because it isn't obvious what some of the statements do. You could make it easier to understand like this:

	local text = args.text .. __categorise()
	local tag = args.type
	tag = mw.html.create(tag)
	tag
		:attr("lang", langName)
		:wikitext(text)
	return tostring(tag)
Assigning a meaningful variable name to the relevant parts of the code helps a lot, particularly for langName, as it's not obvious we are finding a language name when we only have the names args.code and data to go on. It would be even easier to understand with comments. Also, doing this way has the advantage that the code fits into 80 characters, which will display on most monitors without any sideways scrolling.
There are probably other things to say about the code as well, but I'd need to stare at at some more first. Hope this helps for now. — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 18:11, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

  • Well, I made it a global var (global to the module) 'cause I had to juggle the args between functions. But if it means we can't run unit tests that way, I'll keep them in local scope.

  • 'langName' is actually a language code -- it seems that I have -- actually -- managed to confuse you. ;P Codes in the 'wp languages' table that aren't ISO codes and/or invalid language tags carry a valid one in the 2nd element of the 'array' for use in the lang attribute.

I apologize if it appears as though my edits are not constructive. However, may I please ask, then, as to why the information I am including on the Teaching of English as a foreign or second language page is being removed because of the external link to a TEFL course provider's "Job Information" page (and not their course sales page) when References #7 and #16 on that very same page are both linked to 2 other TEFL course providers' websites (Cactus TEFL & i-to-i TEFL)...? If they are both allowed to include links in their references when adding very similar information as me, then why are my external links being discriminately removed? Thank you in advance for the clarification.

You're right, those links are pretty promotional, and need to go. It's alright if a site passes our guidelines on identifying reliable sources, but those sites don't qualify. The best thing would be to replace the sources with citations from academic books or journals, but if those sources can't be found then the links - and the text - need to be removed. Unfortunately, many pages in the TEFL subject area are not very well-curated, and there are a lot of things to clean up. That doesn't mean that it's ok to add new material that violates Wikipedia's content guidelines, though. As well as reading the reliable sources guideline that I linked above, I recommend reading Wikipedia:Verifiability and Wikipedia:Neutral point of view if you haven't done so already. Thank you for the information about WP's guidelines, I will read up on those links to further educate myself in the editing process. However, if I am right, as you said, and those other links I mentioned are considered promotional, as well, then why have they not been removed??? I am still seeing both links listed in the references. I don't understand why you would permit them to be listed on the page another day if they also violate Wikipedia's content guidelines, when my reference was removed within hours of posting it...? "Naghmehetaati" filter

Expressing dismay at being misquoted

You appear to have misread and misunderstood my comments on Talk:Bundy_standoff. I did not make any edits or suggestions relative to the content of this topic. I did, however, attempt to make the discussion more readable by introducing a helpful link. My complaint is that careless editors repeatedly replaced large blocks of text without examining the internals and without preserving previous helpful links. It is not correct for you to say "Megapod wants to keep the word "taser" (and link it)". I did not put in the word Taser, I only upgraded another editor's obscure word choice into a link to another Wikipedia article which explained it. Naive readers of the Bundy article should be informed of the article on Tasers if their curiosity leads them that way.

Earlier versions of the Bundy article also included tasering and tasered, two neologisms which begged for explication. As I implied in my overly polite comment #16 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Bundy_standoff#Is_Taser_a_Commonly_Understood_Word_Among_Readers_At_Large.3F the editors who mistook an encyclopedia for a newspaper probably well knew what a Taser was, possibly from bitter personal experience, but their readers might not.

I would also be interested in some feedback on my suggestion about automatically checking any edits which replace entire paragraphs to be sure that all pre-existing internal cross-references and citations are preserved. Hi Megapod, and sorry if I misrepresented your intent there. Usually edit requests to reinstate missing links and citations are not controversial, and so usually I will enact these requests straight away. However, in this case there was disagreement about the exact wording to use, so I couldn't enact your request as it stood. So to answer your last question, if you would like edits like these to be fixed, just make an edit request with the required text to be fixed, and as long as the request isn't contested it will usually be enacted. (And by the way, "taser" as a verb is now actually in the Collins World English Dictionary, so "tasering" and "tasered" may not strictly be neologisms any more - not that I'm recommending their use or anything.) — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 05:21, 24 April 2014 (UTC)

Do you think we should make it a best practice to stick

@EuroCarGT: Hmm, this is a tough one. I think you are almost ready, but personally I would wait two or three more months to give yourself a better chance of passing. At the moment, I would support you in an RfA, but I am slightly reluctant to nominate you myself - I have a niggling feeling that you may have a tough time at RfA if you ran right now. Your new page patrol work looks excellent - I couldn't find any problems in any of the deleted edits of yours that I spot-checked. Your AfD work also looks good, although sometimes I did see that you would just give rationales like "fails GNG". It would make a stronger argument to explain why the page doesn't satisfy a given guideline, rather than just quoting a guideline. This is a minor quibble about a solid area of your editing, though.

The two things that made me most reluctant to nominate are the length of time you have been on the site, and your content work. I think 12 months is a number that satisfies most RfA commenters expectations of how long a candidate should have been contributing, and you are now at 10 months of solid contributing, just a whisker below what would make me feel comfortable. Also, I cannot find much detailed content work. I see quite a few stub articles, but not much that goes beyond that. In my experience, most RfA commenters like to see content work that is more substantial. Maybe you could work on getting a few articles accepted for DYK, or maybe even try your hand at writing a Good Article? If you've done that, I think you would have a very good chance of passing an RfA after, say, August. Hope this helps, and let me know if you have any questions at all. No, feel free to use my page design. :) As for adminship, I think you are on the right track; however, there aren't many commenters at RfA who will support a candidate that has 3,000 edits. These days, 10,000 seems to be the benchmark, although a lot depends on the quality of your individual contributions. Your AfD participation is looking good so far, although I would like to see more detailed rationales (WP:AADD is a good read if you haven't discovered it already). I'd also like to see some more extensive content creation; try submitting a few things for WP:DYK, and I recommend putting all your good content work on your user page, as that makes finding it much easier for me. :) Other than that, keep up the good work, and you'll be ready for RfA before you know it. @Jim Cartar: That's not how it works. If you want to nominate Phig88 for adminship, you need to do the legwork. Doing a proper review of someone's edits takes a good deal of time, and it is easy to miss important details if you aren't thorough. Hello again, I have checked his contributions for the last month i.e April and it looked fine. He is a Tirelessly editor, day in, day out, he designs new maps, help with "articles for creation", copyedit articles in need, respond to queries on the China noticeboard, create new wikis (more than 60 articles created) and write DYKs (11 DYKs), two featured article, and some GAs. He is indefatigable, and as such he deserves to become an admin. Now I'm not an admin, so I can't judge in this case, that is why I'm asking you for some help. It's not translated, but he doesn't say anything very interesting in it. He just says that this year he wants to concentrate on writing horror, mentions the Nemuki magazine that he's working on, says that a new "Nemuki+" will be out on 13/04/2013, and says that he's starting work on something called "Ma no Kakera" (魔の断片). That, and he mentions that he's started a family. @Bthekuta: I take it you are the IP editor that was adding the negative material to the Thomas M. Cooley Law School article? Actually, there's nothing wrong with adding negative material to the article, as long as it is compatible with the neutral point of view policy. Going for a no-holds-barred, Cooley-is-the-worst approach is never going to be acceptable, and adding a dozen references to something non-neutral doesn't make it neutral. You need to stick to the neutrality policy, and go to the talk page to agree on what to include and how it should be worded. Localization

Hi, it looks like you are the main author of the portal module, so I think it would be easy to you make some changes. I wanted to import the module to Latvian Wikipedia, but we have diffrent system, as we don't have very much portals and the syntax is a liitle bit different. I created such data page:

'Portal name' = 'parameter 1', 'parameter 2', 'parameter 3', 'parameter 4' (optionally)

If it would be template, then its code would be something like this:

[[File:{{{parameter 3}}}|{{{parameter 4}}}]] [[Portāls:{{{parameter 2}}} portāls|{{{parameter 1}}}]]

And for inclusion in article I would write {{portal|<<here goes the portal name (from data module)>>}}.

There's no "persistent vandalism" here. No good reason to have added even Pending Changes - it's so rare for vandalism, and well-looked after by a couple of admins including myself the panda ₯’ 23:31, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

Define "frequently". Look at the history of the page...is it happening a half-dozen times per day, day in and day out? That is when you request protection. Not twice a week. the panda ₯’ 23:57, 21 May 2014 (UTC)
That's why I used pending changes. I saw that in general the vandalism was less frequent, but still common, so PC seemed like a good fit. The three days of semi-protection is because there was a recent flurry of vandalism - four vandalistic edits on the 20th, and one on the 21st, and no constructive edits unless you count the reverts. Lua module: # → §

Hi, MS

I've noticed that people liked my edits that involve use of {{section link}} in article and MOS namespace. (They thanked me on the notification channel.) This edit replaces # with § in links. I was thinking it would have been great if we could expand this to {{Main}} and its siblings.

If it isn't too much to ask, I thought maybe it would be great to develop a Lua solution (or use an existing one) to help. Details as follows.

Extended content

This module must accept to inputs: Link and label. Unless there is a label, the module must scan the link for "#" and if found, add pipe sign (|) clone the link and replace "#" in it with " § ". For example, this:

...would result in:

History of IBM#1969: Antitrust, the Unbundling of software and services|History of IBM § 1969: Antitrust, the Unbundling of software and services

Hi Lisa. :) Would it be alright if the module outputted the double square brackets as well? So we would get [[Foo#Bar|Foo § Bar]] instead of Foo#Bar|Foo § Bar. The reason I ask is that for files and categories you need to use the colon trick to stop the file from displaying or the page from being categorised. However, if the first thing that the module (or a template, or a parser function) outputs is one of the symbols ":" ";" "*" or "#", then MediaWiki adds a new line to the output, which would break the link. See bugzilla:12974 for all of the sordid history of this MediaWiki bug. Other than that, the module should be pretty easy to write. I'll do it later on when I have a little time. Hmm, now that I actually look at the code of {{main}} and {{see also}}, I can see that the best solution would be just to port all of them to Lua. Anything that goes like this...
{{#if: {{{1|}}} | ...
{{#if: {{{2|}}} | ...
{{#if: {{{3|}}} | ...
...is almost always faster in Lua, as we can load only the parameters that have been specified in the template invocation, rather than checking all parameters from 1 to n. It will also make the code simpler, as we can just write the if statement once and then use that 15 times, rather than writing 15 if statements. Well, I'd say everyone would love you for doing this; so much so that in fact, I am feeling a tinge of envy down deep. (That's it; I'm gonna learn Lua the first opportunity!) But I don't suggest tackling the entire Category:Hatnote templates all at once. For the start, {{Main}}, {{See also}}, {{Further}} and {{Details}} would do admirably. (They are very similar.) Ok, Module:Hatnote is now written, and {{Main}}, {{See also}}, {{Further}} and {{Details}} have all been converted and are testable in their sandboxes. See, e.g. Template:Main/testcases for an example. Actually, I'm wondering if we should split the module up into separate modules for each of main, see also, etc. That will make things more modular in case anyone wants to add new templates, and it will also reduce the load on the job queue if someone wants to update one of them. So, just to get my feet wet: I understand that Module:Hatnote is pretty much what I requested in my original message. Is it correct that I can call "formatLink" function but not "_formatLink" via {{#invoke}}?

No, I'm still waiting on the barnstars for that one. :) But just knowing that I've been a small help is reward enough. Do you know of any pages where "#" has been changed to " § ", by the way? As for getting your feet wet, technically you can call both formatLink and _formatLink from #invoke, as they are both contained in the "p" table. However, neither of them will do anything from #invoke directly. _formatLink won't do anything because it isn't passed a frame object, and frame objects are the interface to get parameters to Lua from wikitext. And formatLink won't do anything because it is set to take the arguments from the parent frame of the frame object that it is passed, rather than from the frame object directly. That means that {{#invoke:hatnote|formatLink|Foo}} won't do anything, but {{format hatnote link|Foo}}, which invokes the formatLink function, will. — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 04:47, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
Er... I wasn't talking about inline {{#invoke}}. I tried passing frame parameters to both using User:Codename Lisa/sandbox and Template:Template sandbox. (You can still the result of test in my edit history.) But _formatLink always returns script error, though formatLink works.

Module namespace

Hey Strad, hope all is well with you. I am trying to create a new Location Map template and the framework is saying this must be done in the Module namespace. It's not a wrapper that you need; since {{location map}} was converted to Module:Location map, the location map templates have become deprecated, and are all in need of being moved to module space. The advantage of putting them in module space is that it's much much much much faster. :) I've not tried to create a location map module myself yet, but I believe Template:Location map/Creating a new map definition has the instructions that you need to follow. Out-of-process deletion

This deletion was completely out of process. There was no discussion, and the page doesn't meet any speedy deletion criteria. @KWW: If you have your language set to Dutch, you are also missing many other links that are present in the various MediaWiki messages. I know that I get a fairly stripped-down version of the interface by using the Dutch version. You will get a fairly good impression of how much of it I find useful by how little of it I carry over. Japanese → English translation

Hello Mr. Stradivarius. My name's Ryoga, and I am here to request your help translating a work in Japanese to English (ref: Wikipedia:Translators_available#Japanese-to-English). The work I would like translated is actually a documentary by NHK. It can be viewed here. Would you be able to translate what the person is saying between 7:48 and 8:48.
