Career

Born in Colchester, Szmodics is a product of the Colchester United academy, having progressed through the club's youth ranks since the age of seven.[2] He made his professional debut for the club during an injury crisis, and having impressed at youth level, manager Joe Dunne drafted him into the first-team squad. He came on as a substitute for Craig Eastmond in a 1–1 draw with Bristol City on 28 September 2013[3] and was then introduced in the 57th minute of the following game as a replacement for Jeffrey Monakana in the 3–0 home defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers on 5 October.[4]

In January 2014, it was announced that Szmodics had been shortlisted for a Football League award in the 'Apprentice of the Year – League One' category. He faced Preston North End's Josh Brownhill and Milton Keynes Dons' Brendan Galloway for the award.[5]

With the Colchester United under-18 side, Szmodics helped to earn the club a league title and cup winning double during the 2013–14 season. He scored a hat-trick in the Youth Alliance Cup final held against Bradford City at Valley Parade on 29 April 2014 in a 4–2 win for the U's.[6]
