Semen Semenchenko is the nom de guerre of a Ukrainian citizen and an ethnic Russian native of Donetsk (Ukraine) and the founder of the Donbas Battalion, a military organization engaged in fighting pro-Russian insurgents in the Donetsk region.[1][2]

Biography

"Semenchenko" was born in 1974 in Donetsk and has a degree in film-making.[3] He claims that he and the other members of the Donbas Battalion gained combat experience in the Ukrainian army or Soviet Army.[3] Before the 2014 insurgency in Donbass he claimed he worked in "business activities in the field of security".[2] "Semenchenko" established the Donbas Battalion because "Our state needs defending, and we decided that if the army could not do it, we should do it ourselves".[3][2]
