Kirby and the Amazing Mirror (a.k.a. Kirby Nightmare in Dream Land 2) (Japanese: 星のカービィ 鏡の大迷宮 - Kirby of the Stars: The Labyrinth of Mirrors) is a Kirby video game released in 2004 for the Game Boy Advance.

Overview

Unlike in the standard Kirby game, worlds branch off in several directions and (providing you have the proper power at your disposal) you may go anywhere in almost any order, excluding the final sequence. It also features multiplayer, and you can call other players or CPU-controlled Kirbys to your location with a cell phone. There are several new powers in it, such as Cupid (called Angel in the Japanese version), which allows Kirby to fly around with wings and a halo and fire arrows, and Missile, which turns Kirby into a missile that can be guided in any direction and will explode on contact with a wall or an enemy, or when the B button is hit.

The game takes place high above Dream Land in the mirror world. An evil force invaded it, and Meta-Knight flew up to protect it, but was swiftly defeated by Dark Meta Knight, his shadowy mirror image. Kirby flies up as well and as the game starts Dark Meta Knight cuts Kirby in to four different Kirby's, each with a different color (pink, red, yellow, and green). There is also a Shadow Kirby though it is not nearly as malicious as Dark Meta Knight, and if you attack it, it will throw a power-up at you and flee.

Co-operation between Kirbys is not necessary at any point, though it does enhance the experience.

The world in the game is known as the Mirror World. It is possible the world is a copy of Dream Land, although it doesn't seem possible due to the fact that Dream Land looks entirely different in the game Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. The Mirror World is divided up into 9 different areas, each of which have a boss, besides world 1, Rainbow Route.

Copy Abilities

  • Beam: Lets Kirby shoot an electrical beam. This move can damage Mega Titan directly. (Waddle Doo)
  • Bomb: Gives Kirby the ability to throw bombs at enemies. The bombs can also be placed on switches. Hold down to drop a bomb where you stand. (Foley)
  • Burning: Lets Kirby turn into a fireball and streak through the sky for a short period of time. (Flamer, Batafire)

  • Cupid: Gives Kirby the ability to float using Cupid wings. You can shoot 1 to 3 arrows at enemies, based on how long you hold down the B button. Hold up or down to guide the arrows before they are shot. This may be an homage to NES classic Kid Icarus.(Cupie)
  • Fighter: Lets Kirby uses different fighting techniques to defeat enemies. The standard jab, kick-up, punch-down combo can be interrupted by a different Fighter move at any time. (Box Boxer,Boxin)
  • Fire: Gives Kirby fire breath capable of burning enemies. Hold down any button on the direction pad to guide the fire. (Hot head)

  • Laser: Allows Kirby to shoot lasers that can bounce off hills. (Laser Ball, Metal Guardian)
  • Magic: A random event will occur when this power is used. The events are: letting Kirby get a random power, summoning Meta Knight destroying all enemies on the screen, turning all enemies into food items, giving Kirby an extra life, or making all 4 Kirbies (provided they aren't in the final boss stages or at the plaza) invincible. This move can only be used once. (Boxy)
  • Missile: Gives Kirby the ability to turn into a missile and fly at enemies. (Air roster,Bang-Bang)
  • Parasol: Gives Kirby a parasol that can be used to attack or block falling objects. Hold the B button to keep the Parasol in front of you. It can be used underwater. (Anything with a parasol)
  • Mini: Turns Kirby small so you can fit into small spaces. You cannot attack while shrunk. (Minny)
  • Sleep: Makes Kirby fall asleep for a few seconds. This move can't be rejected with the Select button. It is entirely worthless, and should be avoided, if possible.(Noddy)
  • Smash: Gives Kirby some of his Super Smash Bros. Melee attacks: down Stone, sideways Hammer attack, no direction to use Fighter, and up Final Cutter. (Master Hand miniboss, not the boss at Candy Constellation)
  • Spark: Allows Kirby to create an electrical field around him. It can hurt Mega Titan directly. (Sparky)
  • Stone: Gives Kirby the ability to turn stone and crush his enemies. Can also be used to pound down stakes. (Golem, Rocky, Giant Rocky)
  • Sword: Gives Kirby a sword that can be used to cut enemies. Can be used underwater. His hat was modeled after Link, from the Legend of Zelda series. (Sword knight, Heavy knight)
  • Throw: Allows Kirby to throw enemies and blocks he inhales at low angles. Kirby is invincible as long as he is holding something. (Phan Phan)
  • Tornado: Allows Kirby to become a damaging tornado for a short period of time. Hold up, A, or B to float upwards during Tornado's use. (Twister)
  • Wheel: Gives Kirby the ability to turn into a wheel and race through the level, destroying enemies in the way. Press A to jump while in Wheel form. This move will let you hydroplane over water until you turn. Kirby is vulnerable to attacks while he is turning. (Wheelie)
  • UFO: A rare ability that allows Kirby to shoot a multitude of laser weapons and fly easily through the course. Lasts until you use a Warp Star, reach a goal, or lose a life. The attack used is based on how long the B button is held down. It can be used underwater. (UFO)
  • Master: A sword received for the final boss battles, just like Sword power but with a greater variety of moves. After beating the final boss, the sword can be found in a pedestal at the Rainbow Route hub, and Kirby can use it to find every item in the game (the diving stab attack can pound down stakes, and any of the attacks can destroy tough blocks and light fuses). By releasing the ability with Select, Kirby can take a different ability without destroying the sword; the sword doesn't disappear over time, but it can still disappear upon touching spikes. (Meta Knight, after you beat Dark Meta Knight in the final stage, not after the Radish Ruins boss)

Gameplay

File:Form 3.png

The style of gameplay in this game is very different from all the other Kirby platformer games. The game utilizes the three other Kirbys (or 3 friends if you have some with the game) to help you out in different stages, ranging from puzzles to boss battles. Also, Kirby now has a cell phone, with which you can use to call the other Kirbys to help you out. Instead of being separate world and different levels, it is one huge level (like the Metroid games), connected by teleporting doors. After you go to each of the different parts of the world and you find a switch, a door will open so you can access that level faster. You will have to go through the right doors in every world in order to get to the boss. When you get to the boss, you will fight it and if you beat the boss, you will get a shard of the mirror that has been broken. This game offers better graphics and more interactivity than its predecessors.

Trivia

  • The Kirbys' color schemes from the game during multiplayer are used in Nightmare in Dreamland. The yellow and white variations are the result of a dispute in Kirby's design as he was brought to America for Kirby's Dreamland.
  • This game is the first time the Hand Bros. (Master and Crazy Hand) have appeared outside of a Super Smash Bros. series game. Also, this appearance, due to its being in a canon game, confirms the fact that Master Hand and Crazy Hand are indeed canon characters, as the Super Smash Bros. series is not technically canon.

  • Rainbow Route - no boss
