International School Dhaka (ISD) is a co-educational International Baccalaureate World School in Dhaka, Bangladesh which opened in 1999.[1] The school enrolls students in the age range of 3 – 18, from Playgroup through to Grade 12, providing an international education for local and expatriate children living in Bangladesh.[2] The school has teachers from New Zealand, Canada, Russia, India, USA, UK, Australia, Sri Lanka and Netherlands.

The school is recognized by the Bangladesh Ministry of Education and is accredited by the Council of International Schools, the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization.[3]

History

In 1998, the STS Group decided to diversify into the supply of educational and medical services and subsequently set up subsidiaries.[4] It acquired land in Bashundhara; a site in the northeast quadrant of the city. Bashundhara is a short drive from the main residential and diplomatic areas of Baridhara and Gulshan.[5]

In 1998, construction of the school began on a 5.5 acres plot and was completed during the course of the 1999-2000 school year, when the first classes from Nursery to Grade 5 were admitted.[6]

Today the school fully occupies a rich landscape with classroom space for Nursery (aged 3–4 years) to Grade 12 students.[7] The facilities include a swimming pool, gymnasium, sports field, cafeteria, fully equipped theater with seating for 360, science laboratories, computer suites and a purpose-built library.[8]

The International School Dhaka (ISD) was granted NEASC accreditation on 4 November 2004 and CIS accreditation on 25 November 2004.[9]

Campus

International School Dhaka is an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It is situated on the north-west of the city in the residential area of Bashundhara. The 4.5 hectare campus has centrally air-conditioned. The buildings including classrooms, specialist teaching rooms such as science laboratories, design and technology laboratories, art rooms and art exhibition rooms. Information Communication Technology supports all aspects of schools operations.[10]

Other facilities include an automated library, a sports hall/gymnasium, swimming pool, movie theatre, auditorium, art studios, cafeteria, playing field, tennis courts, basketball courts, playing areas and community gardens. Students are accompanied by teachers on field trips both local and overseas. They also take part in community projects.[11]

Curriculum

The curriculum comprises the Early Years and the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme.[12] The average class size in Play Group to Kindergarten is 16 students, in Primary School is 25, and in Secondary School is 18.[13] Graduates achieve results above the world average in the IB Diploma and attend universities in the United States, Canada, Netherlands, Norway, India, UAE, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, Australia, and the United Kingdom.[14]

International Baccalaureate subjects

Authorized to offer the IB Diploma Programme since May 2005, the programme is taught in English. Students at this school usually take IB exams in May.[15]

Community Action Service

International School Dhaka's campus is home to the most sophisticated auditorium in Bangladesh. Here students from Primary and Secondary take part in productions of musical theater, drama, piano concerts, award shows, and charity awareness programs.[17] An aspect of learning at ISD is for a student to develop experience in helping the community through volunteering in charitable causes and non-profit organizations (for example, Habitat for Humanity).[18]

Students in Secondary School participate in the Model United Nations(MUN), with the team traveling to Malaysia, Singapore, and other nations around the world to partake in the annual MUN meetings. ISD is host to the local Model United Nations debate.[19]

Sports

There are a variety of sports at International School Dhaka, including football, cricket, basketball, volleyball, badminton, tennis, table tennis, swimming and lately chess. Although all of the sports mentioned aren't held in any local tournaments, ISD has co - curricular activities for the lot. [20]

Academic Achievements

In the year 2007, International School Dhaka ranked number one in the Bangladesh Debate Council (BDC)'s 3rd BDC Pre Worlds Ranking.[21]

Hilary Clinton's Visit

On May 6, 2012 former Secretary of State of The United States of America, Hillary Clinton, visited ISD and held a Q&A event at the school's prestigious auditorium.[22] The former Secretary of State of the United States of America shared her vision for Bangladesh’s emergence as a strong developing economy and addressed the ISD Alumni and students in the audience as the future leaders of Bangladesh, with promises of opportunities coming their way.[23] When asked how she overcame the obstacles as a woman to become one of the most influential women in the world today, she emphasized the importance of a good education and the support of her parents.[24]

Clinton had appeared with little makeup during the event which she addressed after the event telling CNN, "I feel so relieved to be at the stage I'm at in my life right now ... Because you know if I want to wear my glasses, I'm wearing my glasses. If I want to wear my hair back I'm pulling my hair back. You know at some point it's just not something that deserves a lot of time and attention."[25]
