The iPhone 6 Plus is an iOS smartphone designed and manufactured by Apple Inc.. Unveiled during a press event on September 9, 2014, the device, along with the iPhone 6, serves as a successor to the iPhone 5S. The model marks the first major increase in physical screen size for the iPhone line since the taller screen of the iPhone 5, measuring at 5.5 inches.[1][2]
Development
The iPhone line had historically maintained the use of small, 3.5-inch displays—the first major change in screen size came with the iPhone 5, which switched to a display that was the same width, but slightly taller, than the screen used on prior models, measuring 4 inches diagonally. As the result of Apple's loss in smartphone market share to companies producing phones with larger displays (such as Samsung, whose popular Galaxy S4 model incorporates a 5-inch display),[3] reports as early as January 2014 suggested that the next iPhone would come in versions with larger 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays in order to compete.[4][5][3] Reports prior to its unveiling also speculated the possibility that Apple would use a new iPhone model introduce a mobile payments platform using near-field communications—a technology that has been incorporated into recent Android phones.[6] iPhone 6 Plus, along with the iPhone 6, are the slimmest iPhones yet.[citation needed] The iPhone 6 Plus has a 5.5 inch display with over a million pixels.
Timeline of models
Apps will be able to take advantage of the increased screen size to display more information on-screen; for example, the Mail app uses a dual-pane layout similar to its iPad version when the device is in landscape mode. To improve the usability of the devices' large screens, an additional "Reachability" gesture was added; double-touching the Home button will slide the top half of the screen's contents down so that users will not have to reach all the way to the top of the screen to, for example, tap a "Back" button in the top-left corner. These feature is only available on the iPhone 6 Plus and not on the iPhone 6. Cite error: The <ref>
