The Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care oversees statutory bodies that regulate health and social care professionals in the UK.[1] Until 2013 it was known as the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence. It assesses the regulator' performance, conducts audits, scrutinises their decisions and reports to Parliament. It also sets standards for organisations holding voluntary registers for health and social care occupations and accredits those that meet them.

The Authority shares good practice and knowledge, conduct research and introduce new ideas to the health and social care sector including the concept of right-touch regulation. It monitors policy developments in the UK and internationally and provides advice on issues relating to professional standards in health and social care.

The Authority does this to promote the health, safety and well-being of users of health and social care services and the public. They are accountable to the UK Parliament. The Authority is committed to being impartial, fair, accessible and consistent in the application of its values.

The Authority is not concerned whether any of the methodologies used by societies that it oversees have any scientific validity. It regards the question of scientific veracity as a matter of opinion.[2]

Voluntary registers

The Accredited Voluntary Registers scheme sets standards and organisations that hold voluntary registers must prove that these to use the PSA accreditation mark.[3]

History

The authority was set up under section 222 of the Health and Social Care Act 2012.[4] Its predecessor, the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence was set up under the National Health Service Reform and Health Care Professions Act 2002.
