Production

On April 19, 2013, Fox renewed Glee for a fifth and a sixth season, as part of a two-season renewal deal for the show.[5] Ryan Murphy subsequently announced that season six would be the show's last, that it wouldn't be New York-centric like the end of the fifth season, that there will be a time jump between the season five finale and the season six premiere, and that during the final season the show would revisit the younger McKinley High students who did not graduate in the fifth season.[6] Season six is expected to premiere in 2015 as part of the 2014–15 television season and consist of 13 episodes, which are planned to be run consecutively.[1]

Executive Music Producer Adam Anders began working on the music for the season on July 16, 2014,[7] and on August 25 his brother Alex Anders was in the studio with Darren Criss doing the show's first cast member recording session of the season.[8]

The season's first day of filming was September 3, 2014, which was revealed that day by co-executive producer Michael Hitchcock with a "Back to school" tweet accompanied by a photo of a first-episode call sheet;[9] Lea Michele posted a picture of herself from the set that same day.[10]

The final season will follow former New Directions lead singer and Broadway star Rachel Berry (Michele) as she returns to Lima to relaunch the New Directions.[11]

Cast

The main cast is being reduced to nine for the sixth season: Chris Colfer, Darren Criss, Jane Lynch, Kevin McHale, Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison and Chord Overstreet continue from the previous season; Amber Riley returns to the main cast; and Dot-Marie Jones as football coach Shannon Beiste is promoted to it after four years as a recurring guest star.[11]

Former main cast members who are reportedly returning as guest stars include Jenna Ushkowitz, Dianna Agron, Mark Salling, Jayma Mays,[12]Naya Rivera.,[13] and Becca Tobin.[14] In addition, Michele tweeted a photo on September 10, 2014, of Heather Morris on set with the hash tag "#GleeSeason6".[15] On September 22, 2014, Becca Tobin announced she would be back on set with the hash tag "#GleeSeason6".[16] Recurring guest stars returning during the season include Iqbal Theba, who plays Figgins, and tweeted photos of himself back at Paramount on September 8,[17] and Max Adler, who plays Dave Karofsky, and is set to return for a "major" arc of at least four episodes.[18]

Five new characters are set to be introduced in season 6. Roderick, a shy guy with a good voice like Otis Redding that will be portrayed by the Youtube sensation Noah Guthrie; [19] Spencer, Marshall Williams, a football player who just happens to be gay and won't be messed with because of his sexuality; [20] Jane, an ambitious girl who'd rather be a Warbler than a member of New Directions; and twins Mason and Madison, both cheerleaders who are extremely weird and really positive, portrayed by Billy Lewis Jr. and Laura Dreyfuss respectively.
