Whitney McVeigh

Whitney McVeigh (1968) is an American artist, living and working in London. She was born in New York and moved to the UK in 1976.

Early life

Whitney McVeigh is the daughter of Pamela and Charles McVeigh III. Her father is an American merchant banker who serves as the Chairman of Citigroup’s Corporate and Investment Banking. She attended Bedales School from 1980 - 1985. In 1988, McVeigh gained a Certificate in Sotheby’s Education. She completed a BA Honours degree in Painting at Edinburgh College of Art in 1996. Whilst a student, McVeigh ran a funk, reggae and rare groove night club named 'Chocolate City' (after the Parliament classic) in Edinburgh with her then boyfriend Jamie Byng,[1] publisher and Managing Director of Canongate Books, who she married in 1996 and with whom she has two children.[2] Byng and McVeigh separated in 2001 and Byng has since married Elizabeth Sheinkman, an American literary agent.[3]

The Work

McVeigh's work is autobiographical.[4] She has travelled extensively to carry out her practice and has held residencies in India, Mexico, China and South Africa. She was one of the artists in residence at NY Arts in their Beijing space. In 2010 she participated in Identity Theft curated by James Putnam at Mimmo Scognamiglio, Milan. McVeigh made a video during a trip to Syria to create Sight of Memory, screened in Icastica Arezzo 2013. In 2009 McVeigh exhibited New Work at the A Foundation, London, curated by Sotiris Kyriacou.[5][6]

In 2013, McVeigh contributed work to a group show Glasstress - White Light/White Heat, as part of the parallel programme of the 55th Venice Biennale[citation needed] as well as a solo project at the Gervasuti Foundation Hunting Song, curated by James Putnam.[7]

McVeigh was artist in residence at Nirox Foundation, Cradle of Humankind in South Africa in 2010 and exhibited the second part of Archaeology of Memory solo exhibition at Johannesburg in 2011. She exhibited Dialogue at David Krut Projects, New York in 2011 following a residency with David Krut in South Africa.[citation needed]
