Dr. Walid Phares, Ph.D is an American expert from Lebanese descent and author on global terrorism and Middle Eastern affairs. He is a Senior Fellow at the [Foundation for Defense of Democracies] (FDD) in Washington, D.C., and a Visiting Fellow at the European Foundation for Democracy in Brussels.

He has published a number of articles in Middle East Quarterly, Global Affairs, Journal of Middle East, South Asian Studies and other specialized journals, and has written several books.

Phares has testified before committees of the State, Justice, Defense and Homeland Security Departments, the US Congress, the United Nations Security Council, and is a frequent guest on NBC, ABC, CBS, PBS,BBC, Al Hurra TVAl Jazeera News programs and is an MSNBC analyst. His columns appear in The Washington Times, World Defense Review, Philadelphia Inquirer, Denver Post, Indianapolis Star, San Diego Tribune and many other publications.

Biography

Walid Phares was born in Lebanon, where he studied at the Universities of Beirut. He obtained degrees in Law, Political Science and Sociology in Beirut where he practiced as a lawyer. He then obtained a Masters degree in International Law from the Universite de Lyons in France and a Ph.D. in International Relations and Strategic Studies from the University of Miami.

He has lived in the United States since 1990, where he has taught at several universities, such as Florida International University, the University of Miami and Florida Atlantic University where he taught classes on Middle East Politics, Political History and Ethnic and Religious Conflict.

Phares lectured on US campuses nationwide and internationally including in London, Stockholm, Mexico, Paris, São Paulo, Brussels, Montreal, Geneva, Lisbon, Rome etc. He has appeared on European, South Asian and Latin American outlets.

Phares authored a number of books and many articles and was the publisher of weekly and monthly publications. His Op Ed appears in many US and international periodicals and newspapers. He has been an academic advisor to human rights, ethnic and diaspora groups.
