Fra' Pietro del Monte was an Italian who was the 50th Grand Master of the Order of Malta, from 1568 to 1572. He succeeded de Valette as grandmaster and continued the construction of Valletta. One of his contributions to the military history of Malta was the building of Del Monte Gate which was eventually demolished and replaced by the Victoria Gate. He was a nephew of Pope Julius III.[1]
