Directa Decretal
Appearance
Directa is a decretal of Pope Siricius dating from 385 a.d. in which the Pope is responding to the situation of clerics in major orders (deacon, priest, or bishop) who are living with their wives and having children in violation of the apostolic tradition of clerical continence.
Pope Siricius decrees that just as Old Testament high priests were required to abstain from sexual relations so much priests of the New Covenant in conformity with the life of Jesus himself.
